Skincare suggestions for daughter

Hey everyone! My mother introduced me to a skincare routine when I was 9 years old, she was a beauty therapist at the time and taught me all about taking care of my skin etc and now my eldest daughter is turning 9, I’m noticing she is getting little bumps on her cheek which my husband and I are thinking may be pimples (they don’t have heads on them from what we can see), anyway I was thinking maybe it’s time I get her started with a skincare routine also? Can anyone recommend a brand which would be good and gentle for her to start on? Thanks 🙂

Thanks everyone, we’ve just found out she has dermatitis also so that’s another thing for us to take into consideration with what products to use on her skin. She’s pretty happy just using the QV wash and moisturiser that our doctor recommended and she has also enjoyed using Sukin (which I am actually considering going back to myself too).

Hmm, given that she’s 9, I’d say to use something that is probably unfragranced and preservative-free, because she is still growing and she’s probably at the most hormonal stage of her age. If all else fails, I’d recommend a dermatologist. My mom used to send me to facials when I was younger given my acne-prone skin, and I regret the scarring that I got from that age. I went to a dermatologist in my later teen years but the damage was already done.

I’d reckon that at 9, the best things would be to moisturise and use sunscreen. Good luck! 9 can be a tricky age, especially for a girl.

All I can say is I started using Clearasil at about 12 years old and I really regret it – it was WAY too hard on my skin. All I could focus on was that I had acne and I wanted to obliterate it as aggressively as possible. Clearasil attacked the acne but it also attacked my skin too hard… leaving acne scarring. At around 19 I figured out that hydrating products, which I thought I DIDN’T need with my oily skin, did the exact same job without all the damage.

So if you’re getting her started on something for her acne I really recommend starting out gentle. But that’s my personal experience!

Go-To skincare is wonderful. Quality ingredients and no nasties – reviews say it is great for teen skin, but I can’t confirm this myself. Worth checking out!

For anyone that’s looking for a skin care range for teens that have acne-prone skin, I’ve seen this article on Adore Beauty that recommends the Clear Start range from Dermalogica:

Also just wanted to mention I am very strict about sunscreen, it is something myself and my two daughters wear daily as I walk my eldest to school and my youngest and I are out and about often so it’s a non negotiable for me 🙂

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I appreciate it 🙂
She is currently using a Sukin sensitive cleanser and moisturiser that I was using before I started using Skinstitut and The Ordinary and she is so proud/excited to be following a regime, it’s really cute. I do like Swisse products, I’ve used the mask on myself so maybe I’ll check out their range for her also.

TaraLeeCupcake, if the suggestions by other members do not work for your daughter, and blemishes are still an issue, the Botáni Skin Rescue Kit might be suitable:

An alternative could be products from the SkinB5 Natural Acne Treatment range:

SkinB5 says that their products are suitable for teens and adults. You may wish to contact the company to ask if any of their products are suitable for your daughter (as she is younger).

I wish someone told me when I was younger not to use clean and clear, clearsil and Neutrogena. Ha ha!! And to put sunscreen on!!!!

I would suggest Clinique. Good reliable brand that is fragrance and colour dye free. Very gentle on the skin.
