Skincare lines at Mecca and Sephora

What is everyone’s experience with skincare lines stocked at places like Mecca and Sephora?
I’m always too scared to buy them just to try them, but keep hearing things about products like Sunday Riley’s Good Genes and Eve Lom cleanser etc.
What do you beauties like?

Thanks for posting this question- I’m a pretty experienced buyer of products, but every time I walk in a Mecca I feel a bit overwhelmed and intimidated. There’s SO much stuff, and it always seems to be so busy, so talking to a staff member never seems to happen.

I hear these brands mentioned by ‘influencers’ a lot, but the price makes my knees shake. I was all set to pick up some Bumble and Bumble shampoo at Mecca until I realised they are around $80 a bottle.

I`ve seen Bumble and Bumble over the years too!
Mecca do have reviews on their own site, but I don`t find them as useful as BH, as they sort of seem to say it`s this great perfect product, and then give it 4 stars, and its $180, so I usually just have been sticking to ones I can sample or read numerous reviews about on here.
It`s a brave new world with influencers around, and makes it even harder to know what is genuinely good and what they`re being paid handsomely to rave about…

I was not impressed by Bumble and Bumble. The last time I used them was 10 years ago. They were okay. But $80? No way.

I pay no attention to any influencers. 99% get paid (or hoping to be paid) by promoting products. I also don`t like to read blogs where someone has nothing but good things to say about everything. Being positive is one thing, but surely you can`t have every single product works in your favour.

I`ve spent a fair few dollars at Mecca and here`s my opinion. Only mine.

        Pros

Brought a lot of brands to Australia we didn`t have access or chance too.

Sell a lot of really great brands that have good ingredients.

If you use your beauty loop right you can get freebies with makeup applications for events and to learn new things.

        Cons

Have the exculsive rights in Australia to a lot of brands.

Are expensive and charge a ridiculous amount for products.

        Never have any sales.

Don`t offer any discounts or payment plans.

Overall I only use Mecca if I want a product I know I can`t get else where.
I think some of these skincare brands they offer are hyped up and contain no good ingredients for the skin.
I personally like Dr Dennis gross products there and Sunday riley but I wouldn`t rush out to buy the others. Products like dermatological can be brought else where.
In the end my thoughts are to look for ingredients first then pay the price and why I like cosmeutical ingredients.

Makeup I do like some of the brands and would buy. Mac and Bobbi Brown I`d buy elsewhere.

Hi Mrs Robinson, I hope when you see this there was nothing intended or nasty in my first message to you & sorry for all the inconvience for all this on your forum there has been some misjudgement here I can only hope you can accept that for as I don’t know you as a person & you haven’t done anything to me.

    • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

I took no personal offence, Goddess.
I just thought that your comment wasn`t overly constructive, as this purpose of this site is to gather some opinions and conversation around certain products – and I created this thread directly for products not listed in the greater review area. But there are no hard feelings here!

    • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

Goddess I don`t see you have bad intentions at all but sometimes words can come across the screen and perceived differently to what was intended. It happens.

    Thanks beauties!
Drunk Elephant is something I’ve seen by beauty bloggers on YouTube.
I’ve just tried Sunday Riley and things on my hands which gives no indication of how it’ll go on your face and I do have sensitive skin. Next time I’m there I’ll ask for samples.
And in agreement about beauty counters in department stores and samples – the lady at Dermalogica gave me a heap when I was just browsing one day. It’s fantastic because they’re putting their money where their mouth is by saying, here’s a tiny bit of this product…We’re happy for you to try it, because you’ll want it afterwards.
These comments make me feel less like I’m missing out on something by not having a huge beauty budget! Haha
For those of you who do shop at Mecca, you can book their makeup applications which is fully redeemable on product – it’s what I plan on doing if I pick up some Chantecaille powder and Nars lip stick! Need to get as much value out of things as possible!

    • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

Over the years I have tried tonnes of Dermalogica products and there are only 2 or 3 at most that I don`t like. It is actually a clever strategy to provide samples like you said, as people would want it afterwards.

As to having makeup done in Mecca… Well it really depends on your luck. I used to work in Mecca and most of the sales are not actually MUA. I haven`t had mine done recently but my friend has (she is a MUA) and she was really upset afterwards and she had to fix it up herself before walking out of the store. I saw a picture and I had to agree with her. It was a waste of time. I wonder if you could specify to have a properly trained MUA when you book in.

      • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

Oh, good to know, SJ, thanks. I think I`ve booked it twice years ago, but if it wasn`t a nice or good application I would be upset then at being obligated with getting the products or paying out right for the “”service””.

I love the Mario Badescu Skincare line sold in Mecca. It’s done amazing things for my skin. If you go in store, have a chatg to the employees about what you’re looking for and ask to take some samples home to try!

  • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

Just my 2 cents worth but you need to become a bit of a sleuth and research the products yourself and not just read reviews as age, skin type and personal sensitivity can be so variable when it comes to results. Go to ingredient analysis pages like cosdna.com and check for acne triggering ingredients, fragrance, preservatives etc

Try to get sample sizes first, most brands have them and they can be a good way to try it out without having to go full sized and expensive. I’ve had good and bad experiences at both stores – depends on who you get on the day I’ve found but as for advice I wouldn’t be getting it from employees working there. I much prefer to get advice from the brands actual beauty counters like in DJ’s or Myers as they are more helpful and will always give a consult and generous with the samples.

Hadn`t heard of/known of this website before, duality – it`s great! Thanks so much 🙂

    • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

I agree duality in doing the ground work in research ourselves before purchasing, and then, if possible, trying the product before handing over our hard earned dollars.

I have no hesitation at all in asking for samples if I`m considering purchasing a high end product I haven`t used before. Although my local Mecca has been okay if I`ve asked for a sample, I`ve had much more success in talking to the brand consultants at DJs or Myer who also more willingly provide samples.

My friend and I were browsing the EA counter at a Myer store last week when the consultant started talking to us about their new Ceramide products which were launched the day before, and gave us a few samples each. I`m more likely to purchase that product, providing I like it, rather than a product from Sephora or Mecca, especially as there is a GWP on a spend of $75 starting 11 March.

  • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

I spend heaps on money in both stores but 95% of the time for makeup. The last time I bought skincare was from Mecca and it was an expensive Drunk Elephant serum. It is okay, I like it but I find it difficult to justify the price. They do have some nice skincare brands but then again are they so non substitutable that I must get them at the crazy price that Mecca is charging? I don’t think so.

I don’t think I have ever bought skincare from Sephora… I agree the customer service from Sephora is terrible. The sales have no product knowlege at all. Usually I go in knowing exactly what I want to get otherwise it’s just a waste of time.

  • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

My daughter only buys a certain item(s) from Mecca at a random moment and I remembered stepping into the Mecca store for the first time and nearly got knocked back with the price range and they don’t have sales. With Sephora , it is like going to Myer so I think it is just exclusive brands you see there. At least they have sales.

  • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

I’ve tried Drunk Elephant stocked at Mecca. I have nothing to criticise about the entire range to date except that it is too expensive.

I have also purchased Alpha-H from Sephora only to realise it was much cheaper elsewhere.

And that goes for the majority of the skincare priced at Mecca and Sephora.

Spoiler alert: I don’t like Sephora at all. Everything is poor – price range, product range, accessibility, consistent stock, but mostly service (non-existent and sales staff are ignorant of the products they sell). Sephora website is also a joke if you’re trying to find a product – inconsistent with what they have in-store, in terms of either having it in stock or simply not listed on the website as available in stock in-store in the first place.

Mecca still has a chance with me as I’ve only ever received good service from there both in-store and online so far, but the prices are still too generally inflated to gauge my interest.

    • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

Was it the Liquid Gold from Alpha H that you use? It`s on my list to try.

    • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

Agree with this. I love Drunk Elephant but it`s way, way, waaaaay too overpriced.

Mecca and Sephora`s own in-house line of skincare (Mecca Cosmetica, Sephora Collection) is pretty average. I`d just stick to the stuff at Priceline for a fraction of the price and it`s better.

The only skincare brand I really like from Mecca is REN Skincare, but that`s about it. It`s simple, effective skincare at a reasonable price. The only thing I`d really splurge on in terms of skincare is a high quality anti-ageing serum or an eye cream. Other than that I find drugstore products can definitely fit the bill for cleansers, moisturisers, scrubs, masks etc.

I`ve heard mixed reviews about Sunday Riley but I`ve never tried it. I`ve tried some Eve Lom products such as their cleansers and they`re very good – but very overpriced for something you just wash off in a minute and use daily. I mean… $70+ for a tube of cleanser… when I can get a basic one for $10 at Priceline and cleans my face just as well.

  • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

Ok that’s fair enough, I’m sure there are plenty of beauties on here who see this have tried those product’s once in there life time hopefully you can get answers your looking for. Best of luck.

  • 6 yrs, 2 mths ago

Oh, more so that they’re super expensive to try, not that I think they’ll be that awful, just wonder if they’re good value and people get results from them.
