moisturizer causes eyes to sting and weep

Hi there,

I have extremely senstive skin and forever trying to find the right moisturizer. I was using Lancome HydraZen but they went and changed it and now its no good for me!

What happens now with anything i try and I do not put near my eyes – is after a few hours my eyes start to sting andd geti
get watery… Its like having sunscreen or oil in them. By the end of the day they are so sore and just wanna close.

Does anyone else have this happen to them? Any suggestions on what moisturizer that is good for my 47yo skin which is dry/combination.

Sonya

Hi. I have the same problem that developed in my late 30’s. It’s likely not any particular moisturizer. It’s more likely caused by the sebum (oil) produced by your skin and glands at the hair follicle (eyelashes and any hair on the scalp or face like eyebrows). I never used to have this problem but now part way through the day my eyes sting and once I wipe them and dab at the corners I’m fine.

I have that very strongly with many products that have SPF in them – Hydra Zen comes with SPF, too, so perhaps that is it?

I also experienced this with some beauty products. It’s good that some of you have provided some suggestions. Will try them soon.

I would avoid your eye area when applying moisturiser to your face. It’s quite common for moisturiser to irritate your eyes if you are applying it too close.

I was taught that even eye cream shouldn’t been put on too close to the eyes. Using the cheek bones as a guide of where to put the moisturiser to has always worked for me.

I never moisturise above the cheek bones it will sink into the skin anyway. I also apply the eye cream just across the tops of the cheek bones.

I have a similar thing, I’ve got to the doctor whom has given me a steroid like cream to help. Maybe it is the moisturizer or could be a skin irritation like mine. Seeing a doctor could tell you which it is. Hope all goes well

Environ is such a gentle brand! I’d recommend starting on their AVST moisturisers.

So I recently found out that my L’Occitane Spf day cream is the culprit to my stinging eyes!! I didn’t realise that until I switched day cream. I always thought it was my contact lens or something.

I now only use proper eye cream around my eyes and then I use a concealer with SPF (estee lauder stay in place compact) just for the sunscreen. Also I found that the Clinique moisture surge supercharged concentrate does not sting eyes. It ia recommended to be used around eye areas.

Trying UBeauty – and no stinging eyes 🙂
I am so annoyed at Lancome for changing theirs because I loved that moistorizer!! I was awesome under my mineral foundation!

This is possibly right off topic and if it is, forgive me – BUT – could you need to see an Eye Specialist to rule out any underlying cause? Just a thought – ignore it if it’s irrelevant!

A bit of a different opinion here.

I actually find that there is no product that won’t sting/irritate your eyes. Usually, if your eyes are stinging/weeping it’s because under your eyes has already become irritated due to crying, rubbing, etc. When that happens, everything stings a little, even something as gentle as pure jojoba oil. But, you need to use something there to help it heal and protect it. I use pure jojoba oil as that seems the gentlest and moisturises the area well however as I said there is still some slight stinging.
