Making your skincare go that extra mile.

Hi there Lovelies,

Does anyone have any favourite skincare hacks that save you a few dollars and make your skin glow?

I’m not necessarily talking DIY beauty here; simply tips that save your skin and don’t break the bank.

I love purchasing raw botanical actives and adding them to my basic moisturiser and find this goes a long way compared to purchasing preformulated off the shelf skincare.

There are great forums online that you the ins and outs of formulating if you have the time and inclination to check them out.

http://Www.Skincaretalk.com is one that comes to mind.

Glycerine based actives can easily be incorporated into basic moisturisers and are relatively inexpensive.

Any other tips or tricks are greatly appreciated!

I love experimenting with new ingredients. Currently going crazy over trying out Ghee (Clarified butter) in my routine. Tried using it as nightcream and although the effect was good, the smell would change from nice caramelly to old butter and didn’t like that (obviously)…so now trying to find skincare products with Ghee in them.
Next on my experiment list is – Ghee based hair mask 😛

I could never put ghee on my face.

My nana, mum and aunties used to make it and I could never handle the smell..

I use diluted and buffered lactic acid on my face…

I will experiment yoghurt or coconut yoghurt.

There are so many great Ayurvedic traditions…

Three should be treated like wash off mask – not as moisturizer. You can mix bit of turmeric if you like – massage – leave for 2 to 5 minutes and wash off. I love fresh ghee fragrance but gets funky on skin after few minutes.

My mum also used to rub hing into her skin.

I have since learned that hing is a rich source of ferulic acid!

Apparently the more melanin you have in your skin, the less wrinkles you get but hyperpigmentation is what you contend with instead of wrinkles.

I have two patches of melasma that are slowly fading away…

Justice of universe – no one gets it all :/ Except Gal Gadott may be – I love how gorgeous she is 😛

        Love Gal Gadot!

        …and she has two kids.

I reckon having kids make us look younger…

I also think a lot of people look better with age.

        Looking forward to my forties!

Do you find that the ghee breaks you out?

Fresh Aloe Vera is my holy grail I use it on both my skin and hair. Breakouts, tired skin, big pores, and dry hair all with this!… I use it along with store bought products and the combination works really well.

Same, love aloe vera!! So many uses! I love using it as a serum in summer.

I try to compare my expensive serums with cheaper ones like the ordinary. If they ordinary has the same or more active ingredients I give that a go and see if there is any difference. I have saved hundreds and hundreds just on a few serums. The prices are insane and I haven’t looked back yet.

So true. I love trying out new small but organic brands for the same reason. Currently in love with Glow Lab products.

Interesting that you mention glycerin as I recently was reading about how it is used as a hair serum to stop frizz and nourish and also used to boost a lot of serums with questionable ingredients ( looking at you Genifique lol) as it makes skin feel smooth, plump and soft. It’s really cheap too and lasts forever. Think you can get it woolies or Coles but I’ve not tried yet.

A while ago BH did a brief article about eye drops applied to skin removes dark circles under the eyes. Pity it lacked detail on which particular type of eyedrops but I researched and found an article by Harpers (I think, I’ll find it on my computer when I’m home and link it) and it’s anti redness eye drops. I’ve tried for a month now and it’s made a huge difference and I don’t need as much concealer.

I didn`t know about using gylcerin to remove frizz, my hair, frizzes something terrible at the beach, this I will try in summer, thank you for info very useful. Kind regards, Susan

      I love glycerin.

I get mine from New Directions.

The eye drops you mention work because they are vasoconstrictors.

I think you can use haemorrhoid cream with similar success! Haha!

Hi Lucy, I have viewed the website and it has good step by step videos to show the safe way to do home chemical peels. There are a few I have tried and they do work well.

  • 5 yrs, 5 mths ago

Exfoliating at least once a week and retaining smooth skin creates a surface for your skin care to become more effective and ultimately requires less of the product to be used.

    • 5 yrs, 5 mths ago

I agree that’s all I do as well exfoliate. Makes a massive difference.

    • 5 yrs, 5 mths ago

      So true.

I use Glycolic acid for that very purpose.

Have you heard of Make Up Artists` Choice?

It`s a website that sells various chemical peels at different concentrations according to your requirements.
