Favourite facial serums?

Hi, I am interested to hear what people’s favourite serums are and why. I’m looking for a new serum and I am puzzled by what to try as there are so many out there!

Do you prefer oil or water based? What benefits does your face serum provide? What kind of skin do you have? Do you find that more expensive serums work better?

I have seen on BH that the Estee Lauder advanced night repair serum is highly rated, and would love to try it, but that s currently out of my price range.

I’d love to hear from fellow skincare enthusiasts! Thanks for your help 🙂

I use Swisse Hyaluaro-Natural Moisturising Facial Serum.
    Australian made in Melbourne.
    No nasties
    Nice product.

Trust me on this one…but Aldi has a hyaluronic acid serum at $10 for 30ml. It comes in a glass bottle with a dropper too and is super nice and from the ingredients list doesn’t appear to have any nasties! (it only has about 7 ingreieents anyway).
    An absolute steal

I actually bought this one recently and I agree – it is really good and the ingredients list is refreshingly small, along with the price. Such a bargain! My skin loves it too. Have you tried any of Aldi`s other skincare or beauty products? I purchased one of the sheet masks that they had in, but other than that, this is my only beauty purchase from them. I`m very happy and may look into trying some of their other products.

I’ve just finished a sample of the Elizabeth Arden Prevage Serum which was lovely to use. My skin drank it up. Even the sample lasted a long time so even though the product is pricey it will last.

Expensive ≠ the best. Also the price you pay for quality goods can only be so high before you are overpaying, even for quality goods.

I love Estee Lauder’s ANR serum. I’ve only ever purchased it once and have two little travel size bottles so they’ve lasted me a long time. I’m not in the age bracket for using skincare products targetting anti-ageing (just turned 30) but I find it is a very effective serum for other reasons, i.e. smoothing my skin texture and keeping my skin supple. The price tag is too dear though.

Since adopting a mostly Korean skincare routine, I’ve incorporated ANR less frequently. I layer multiple essences and use a multitude of ampoules instead.

I also have the Missha Time Revolution Night Repair Science Activator Borabit Ampoule (phew! what a long name!) and it’s meant to be an excellent dupe for Estee Lauder’s ANR and very affordable. It may even be superior to ANR as it does not have the same acne triggers ANR does, and consists of a lot of beneficial plant extracts, including niacinamide which has anti-inflammatory and brightening properties.

Thanks for the tip about Missha Time Revolution Night Repair Science Activator Borabit Ampoule (and thank you to the copy and paste function too!), I will look into that. Affordable = good!

I like using anti ageing products even though I probably don`t really need to yet, I just want to prevent the fine lines from becoming worse; I really doubt anyone else can see them 😉

I`m always keen to try anything that says it will brighten skin – I dream of having luminous skin! I just recently purchased Antipodes Apostle skin brightening serum and I have really noticed a difference even though I haven`t been using it long.

I`m aiming for brightness too! I`ve seen a few beauties on here discuss Swisse Kakadu Plum Brightening Serum as another affordable and effective product for brightening. I might have to try it out myself too.

Hi blackkittykat82, great forum topic! Personally I don’t use a serum (terrible I know, but my current favourite Skinstitut product regime is working a treat and I don’t feel the need for one). Here are 10 of the top-reviewed serums on bh – it’s a good starting point if you’re in the market for one!

Hope this helps, look forward to hearing what one you end up going with!

I like Clinique’s Smart Serum and Repairwear laser focus serum.

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

I had Clinique`s Repairwear Laser Focus Serum but it did absolutely nothing for me. No effect whatsoever. Just wondering why you like it and how it affects your skin?

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Made my skin feel smooth soft and prevented lines and wrinkles. I`m currently using Clinique Smart Serum which I also like, helps even out skin tone and is hydrating.

There’s plenty of well-priced serums that are on BH, from all the well known brands you’ll find in places like Priceline. I’d recommend checking out reviews on here for some in depth details, it’ll help you narrow down choices I hope – there’s so many serums on the market nowadays, plus facial oils, essences, boosters and so on.

Also check the Trial Teams section for serums that plenty of members have tried & reviewed.

Personally I like Dermalogica’s serums / boosters, but they are salon prices so a little more expensive. I also have been using facial oils as skin boosters / hydrators in the past couple of years

One I have tried that’s definitely more affordable, I got it at a Beautorium, is Yes to Blueberries serum – sadly it seems Yes To is no longer on BH, so you won’t find the reviews, but I do remember it was very good & under $30

blackkittykat82 great question! i would say the next question for you would be

    • what are your skincare concerns and
    • what is your age and
    • what is your budget.

i ran out of my western serums and am going absolutely minimalistic with my serums at the moment.

    currently:
i am using a korean first treatment essence which is like a cross between a toner and serum. (like SKII miracle water) + Dark Spot serum + Vitamin C & Hyaluronic Acid serum + Korean Snails essence

The serums i am using is to target pigmentation & hydration concerns. This is my version of minimalistic anyways.

i usually have a long laundry list of skin concerns to tick off. That will work out to be a long list of products to use. So your routine is as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. Serums are usually a good potent way to add treatement to address specific skincare concerns.

Check out this thread where others share their routine

If you are unsure. i suggest to start with Vitamin C, it helps with collagen and there is usually not enough in most moisturisers .
this is the one i am using, i love it. am nearly emptying the bottle

i have recommended a few others to get this and they have gave positive feedback on this product. love how it hydrates so well!

    hope this helps:

i was also reading’s this blogger’s guide to skincare. perhaps worthy to checkout her instructions on how to choose.

Thank you so much for the links! I have been meaning to reply for ages, but it is very easy to get distracted on beauty heaven.

In answer to your questions, I am 34 and I have some fine lines and dry skin; I am currently experiencing break outs around my chin (damn hormones!) and I have dull skin. I`m really after recommendations for a hydrating serum i think – after looking at the products that I have, which concerns they address, and how effective they are.

I am currently using the Sukin hydration booster (facial oil) and Antipodes Joyous protein serum; these are good, but not hydrating enough.

Budget wise, I probably don`t want to spend more than $100. I really like the sound of the White Egret – and the price too. I think I will give that a go and see how I like it.
I was previously using L`Occitane`s Immortelle cream mask as a moisturiser and that provided great hydration, but I can`t afford to buy it right now, so I appreciate your suggestion. Thank you so much again for the links and your recommendations.

I`m using the White Egret moisturiser and I love it, I`m about to open my second tub.

I used to be a Clarins girl and they have a fantastic hydrating serum, HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase, and Clarins.com.au has a good GWP at the moment too.

I love it when they have a GWP! Thanks for the info about this serum, I will look into that. I think I will definitely purchase the White Egret cream when my current one runs out.

Have seen Estee Lauder’s Advanced night repair serum.
I got a deluxe sample and was thinking if i should give it to my mom instead. The benefits of ANR seem to be very for anti-aging and wrinkles. thank goodness, i don’t have wrinkles.

previously i have used at least 2-3 bottles of EL ANR eye cream and was ok with it. i did not try their face serum.

not sure if it can help as a preventative or if it is too early to start.
Would love your thoughts for those who use it.

Skincare junkie previously shared me 2 links on it and they were very good. If i find them, will share them here.
