facial waxing while using retanoil!?!

i had recently been using The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion to lighten some pigmentation on my face, i then went to my waxing appointment where i get my brows and upper lip done, a few days later i was horrified to see this very dark pigmentation around my mouth and spent days trying to figure out where i had gone so wrong in my skincare routine until one day it clicked that i had just got my waxing done before it appeared.

after some online research i quickly came across many articles on why you shouldn’t be waxing while using retanoil products and the dangers of it!

i would love to know if anyone has experienced this or knew about it, or maybe i was the only one who was completely clueless?

i am now on what i feel like will be a long road of trying to lighten the darkened pigmentation, i would just love to know if this is something everyone knew about?!

this is the article that helped me the most:

My eyebrow lady (stylist? beautician? I’m not sure what her title is…) advised against waxing as any type of Retinol/Retinoid treatment can cause the skin to become thinner, which increases the risk of tearing the skin. So she tweezed instead. Not worth the risk for the damage it can do!

I’ve recently started using Retanoil, so I’m glad to have seen this before I went and damaged my skin!

This is the problem when people “self-prescribe” treatments for their skin without getting a dermatologist appointment/consult first. Not trying to have a go at you because you raised a good and valid point.

Before I used any serious treatment type products on my skin I saw a derm first, they can give you a consultation appointment and it helps you to understand your skin and what products can help and harm it.

Retinoids are wonderful and I’ve been using them for years but they have their downsides. Threading is recommended when you use retinoids as wax rips off the top layer of an already compromised skin layer (retinoids are an exfoliating product) and this can result in hyper-pigmentation when it heals.

It should heal on its own and fade naturally, but you are going to have to be super-vigilant with the sunscreen forever. I hope at least you are wearing 50+ daily as you must when using retinoids or you will find your problem get worse.
