Facial Cleansing

Hello BeautyHeaven people!
I have a question, regarding the use of facial brushes:
Are facial brushes actually beneficial? Do they work, or is it a waste of money?

Following on from this dilemma, I was wondering which is better for sensitive skin:
– Silicon facial brushes (etc Foreo)
– Bristle facial brushes (etc Vanity Planet)

Any feedback/help/comment would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you all 🙂

    UPDATE TIME:
I actually purchased a cheap silicon brush. Hopefully I see a difference in the near-future! Thank you again for all of your opinions and feedback! It is much appreciated!

So you took the plunge, Tiara! I`ve seen those in the Aldi special buys catalogues in the past – I hope it works for you.

Welcome to the forum Tiara 🙂 which silicone brush did you buy? I love my Lumiskin, don`t forget to double cleanse if you wear make-up! I use a cleansing balm first and follow with my normal cleanser on my brush for best results.

I actually purchased mine from Aldi, so it isn`t any particular brand. One day I would love to purchase a Lumiskin or a Forero, as I have heard great reviews about both brands. But in the mean time, I am pretty happy with mine. :))
And thank you for the tip – I`ll be sure to double wash when removing make-up!

I saw them advertised in Aldi, are they rechargeable?

      • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

Unfortunately they aren`t, which is what I would have preferred. They require batteries, but are waterproof. Do you recommend the one you are currently using??

      • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

I love mine Tiara, I got it on special from the Shaver Shop but I was thinking about buying an Aldi one for my daughter unless I find a Lumiskin on special somewhere. Is the Aldi one good?

      • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

        Oh nice!
For the price of it, the Aldi one is decent. I haven`t used it for very long, but I feel that it gets in deeper than using just fingers and cleanser. I don`t think it has multiple settings though, which means it is one strength for all parts of the face. Also, the tip of the brush is quite round, which means it is difficult to get into smaller areas, like the nose, or between the brows.
But I`d recommend it to start out with! :))

      • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

I think the Aldi one is pretty much the same shape as the lumiskin, and to be honest I only really use one setting on mine so the Aldi one seems like a good buy.

Hmm reading the comments and having used the Olay one in the past (it was pointless and just did nothing for me) then trying out a cleansing brush that came with my Braun epilater (once again same disappointment) I just don’t think they’re for me. Especially since I started using Retinol, AHAs, BHAs and Niacinamide. I’d be too afraid of broken capillaries. I do use a gentle scrub mask from Lush occasionally too, but that doesn’t give me any problems. My blackheads are just mainly on my nose, but very small and “entrenched”. As long as I keep to a good skincare routine they’re hardly visible (unless under a magnifying light – then all my pores are MASSIVE! Haha!). They’re so small and impossible to “pop out”. I think I’d need some deep cleansing mask plus steam just for my nose lol…

    • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

      Thank you for the honesty!
I am the exact same when it comes to blackheads – my nose is definitely the worst area for them! I occasional break out on my chin to, but I am fairly sure that is hormonal.

Slight detour from the thread, but what products do you use that contain retinol, AHAs, BHAs and/or niacinamide? I`ve heard good things about these ingredients, but can`t find any reasonably-priced products, so your imput would be much appreciated! Thank you :))

    It’s a soft bristle brush.

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

That`s good! Apparently bristle brushes do a good job at getting in the nitty – gritty!

I bought a basic manicare one a while ago, haven’t used it much but reminds me to use it again if only I can find it..

Thank you all for your suggestions! I am definitely leaning more towards a silicon cleansing brush now that I have read all of the responses. So helpful!

Tiara my Foreo has been life changing for me. I never have problematic skin and I did not know that my skin could actually improve SO MUCH until I started Foreo (less congestion, less breakout, smoother, more glow) And when LUNA3 comes out – it’s even better than LUNA2 as LUNA3 is more gentle (longer silicone touch points).

I used to have an Olay bristle brush but personally, I found that too abrasive (I don’t have sensitive skin, and my skin can withstand quite a high setting of microdermabrasion!).

Based on that, I’d say for sensitive skin best to go with silicone

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

Yes, smoother & more glow here with my Dermasonic, too! I would never have bought one because I didn`t expect it would make a difference, let alone such a dramatic difference!

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

Thank you for the suggestions! I have heard great things about foreo too. :))

  • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

If you’re prone to redness or broken capillaries I would probably stay away from cleansing brushes all together. However, if you choose to use a a facial cleansing brush….I would definitely suggest a silicone brush head compared to a generic bristled brush head. Silicone brush heads are far more hygienic and easier to clean.

    • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

Glad you brought that up. I actually suspected the Olay brush I had years ago gave me broken capillaries!

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

I didn`t even consider the abrasive-factor, so thank you very much for suggesting it! I`ll definitely be taking that into consideration. Thank you!

I have the Foreo Luna Mini and I love it! It is whisper-quiet, feels great on the skin and a single charge lasts around 5 months. I recommend it if you don’t mind splurging a bit (the Foreos aren’t cheap, unfortunately).

However, I don’t think they’re at all an essential product to have – you can achieve a similar result with your hands so I think it just comes down to personal preference.

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

I`ve got to respectfully disagree that you can achieve a similar result with your hands – you must be blessed a better complexion than me, xClaudia. My complexion improved dramatically even with the cheapie Olay. I`ve got/had large pores, entrenched blackheads & I`m blemish-prone.

      • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

I think the results of my brush can be matched but not just with hands – I needed at least cleansing plus 2 different types of exfoliants (granular scrub and microfoliant) in rotation to achieve that similar result to a brush.

      • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

I admit, other than some redness, I have pretty `good` skin – I`ve never had issues with acne, scarring, blackheads or any sort of blemishes really. Hence, cleansing for me is something I do because I just know that I am `supposed` to. So I`m sure you`re probably very much correct – while I personally don`t notice much of a difference with my own skin, using a device probably is much better than your hands if you have skin concerns!

      • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

“”… cleansing for me is something I do because I just know that I am `supposed` to.””

What? OMG, xClaudia! It`s official: jelly AF! You ARE blessed with a good complexion!

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

I have heard such great things about the foreo brand! Definitely a product that I will be considering, thank you for the response.

  • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

    G’day Tiara!

I bought a cheapie Olay brush – many years ago. It was the type with the replacement brush-heads. It made a dramatic improvement to my blemish-prone skin & got rid of the entrenched blackheads I had across my nose. Olay discontinued it, so I trawled Chemists all over Sydney (& online) to get replacement heads.

Then, I won a Dermasonic+ Cleansing Device (with silicon nubs, similar to a Foreo) from Bh back in 2017. It was even better, so I gave the old Olay & my hoard of brush-heads to my sister. Years later, I’m still using the Dermasonic regularly. One charge (USB) lasts ages! My complexion looks brighter & clearer, my pores look tighter & my face feels smoother. I would HIGHLY recommend the Dermasonic or other silicon nub type cleansing brushes.

Mind you: I should mention that my skin isn’t sensitive. It’s tougher than average due to thyroid disease.

Hello! I`ve heard such great reviews on the Dermasonic+ Cleansing Brush. I love how it`s USB-charged, and that it is silicon. I`ll definitely have a more in-depth look at it now that you`ve mentioned it! Thank you for the comment :))

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

I used to have the Olay brush too and replaced it with a Lumiskin silicone cleanser from Shaver Shop and I love it, like you say it lasts for ever between charges! I only use it a couple of times a week though as I`m too lazy / tired when I get home from work.

      • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

I think silicon-based brushes seem to be the way to go! Again, love that it lasts a while between charges. Thank you for the review!
