Face – moisturiser, lotion, cream or oil?

Hi fellow BH’ers

I am looking for a new moisturiser. I have been using Cetaphil for years and whilst it has been good I would like to try something different.

I am in my early 40’s. I don’t have a problem with dry skin but my skin is starting to look a bit dull and I am starting to show my age (especially around my eyes). Unfortunately I still get breakouts. Just when I think my pimple has cleared up another starts to show. I have been reading articles etc and am a bit confused about what to use next. What is the difference between each. I’ve heard lots of talk about Vitamin C, is that something I should be thinking about? Is an oil better than a serum or do they need to be used together or alternated. HELP!

Did I mention I’m on a tight budget? Well I’m also time poor so a one or two step process is what I’d prefer or an all in one! I have been using an eye cream lately but that’s about all.

Any thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks x

FYI pH of Garnier micellar is around 8-9, i.e. terrible for actives.

I didn’t say micelles were surfactants. I said micellar water contains surfactants in the formulations. Micelles and surfactants are not interchangeable terms for the same ingredient. There’s more to just micelles in the formulations of micellar water.

About micellar water, I’m now a bit on the fence if it is bad for the skin or not. I’ve read several articles lately saying it is bad for eyes and promotes clogged skin and the PH is terrible.

Duality, I read the articles you referenced and found them to be a little narrow. I think it`s important to acknowledge the following:

      1. No pH is necessarily “”Good”” or “”Bad”” on it`s own. The pH throughout our body is consistently different in different areas/organs ie. pH of 2 in the stomach. The body is also in a state of flux in ensuring that various areas maintain optimal pH. So spinach, carrots or broccoli with pH`s of around 10 don`t permanently destroy the pH of the stomach, which consistently returns to around 2. Our bodies are dynamic when it comes to pH, including the skin.
      2. Micellar water being bad for eyes and skin refers to the clogging nature of leaving something on your skin. The same applies to makeup, skin oils and pollution from walking through a city street. I believe that cleansers should be washed off straight away, but given that most people shower every day, that`s kind of happening anyway.
      3. The concept of a micelle simply refers to the configuration of molecules into a particular shape, round with water loving on the outside and water phobic on the inside. Micelles are essential to our digestion and the movement of fat soluble vitamins in the body. So the association of micelles being surfactants is about the functionality of the micelle but it has been used in some articles as a sensational idea that we`re using industry grade chemicals on our delicate skin – perhaps to get readers or perhaps the writers don`t really understand what they`re finding out either?

I believe that micelles are beneficial in removing waterproof makeup, over other cleansers, because you shouldn`t have to rub your eye/skin. Holding the micelle drenched pad/wipe on the area that you want to have the makeup removed from should attract and trap the makeup. So you can lift off the pad and most, if not all the makeup in that area, should be removed. This is far better than some cleansers that require you to wipe and rub the area. You then simply wash with a gentle cleaner/water and you`ve saved your skin years of rubbing and wiping. Used in this way, the micellar water pH should have negligible impact on your skin`s pH, you`re not leaving the micelles on your skin and you should avoid any micelle specific clogging. Hope this helps?

Zanna thanks for your input :). PH is important for me as I use actives like Vit C (among others) I find all micellar waters I’ve used don’t do the job for me as good as a water rinseable oil

My opinion is that it is good if you need it in an emergency and on the go. Otherwise, it`s not a good addition to your daily cleansing routine. Most micellar waters (actually I don`t know of any that don`t) contain surfactants, which need to be washed off. If you leave it on, it`s harmless, but if you keep leaving it on and exposing your skin to it repeatedly, over time your skin will develop sensitivity.

My eyes are sensitive too Duality so as long as it doesn`t have alcohol and has gentle non harsh ingredients it should be fine. Normally it will sting if not good so that`s a good way of telling too.

Have you tried Sukin? They have a lovely range of products and they’re always on sale at either the supermarkets or Priceline.

    • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Not yet glossqueen. I do have their scrub in the Priceline goody bag though.

I’ve been using Rosehip PLUS’s range… They sell it at Chemist Warehouse… You can get a day, night, Oil and cleanser for under $75 dollars and it really helped with my dry skin… If you are after a toner too I use Witch Hazel from the supermarket… My skin has never looked so good and other’s have noticed it too…

    • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Realistically I know that I probably won’t use toner. I’m more likely to do the “double cleanse”. I do want to make a trip to Chemist Warehouse. I just find that their sales assistants usually don’t have the training.

Okatko, at some stage, you may want to introduce an alcohol-free toner / aromatherapy toning mist. I always use a natural-based creamy cleanser and I feel that they leave a subtle film or residue on the skin. I use a toner to remove the cleanser residue, as well as any residue of makeup and impurities. I usually see a residue on the cotton makeup remover pads.

      • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Will micellar water do the same thing? If I continue to use cetaphil as my primary cleanser and then run over my face again with micellar water?

      • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Okatko personally I won`t use micellar as a toner. Micelles are basically cleansing aggregates and IMO they should be rinsed off as well . I don`t really understand why some people use it as a “”toner”” (I have heard of it before) as it doesn`t really “”tone”” anything. If you don`t want to use a toner/mist I recommend just spray your skin with a fine mist of water. The moisture helps the skincare (serum, etc) to penetrate.

Skinjunkie its because if you read instructions it says leave on skin and dont need to rinse. I have a small bottle of Sephora citrus ML which my daughter got as a sample and it acts like a toner. But I cant leave it on my skin bec its citrus so I use it like a makeup remover then clean afterwards. So in fact these micellar waters are not pure and technically not good for the skin !

      • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

I second skincare junkies comments. Micelles are somewhat like a ball, where the outside is happy to be in water and the inside is hiding from the water. This enables a micelle to trap oil like substances, or waterproof makeup, on the inside away from water. The micelles should then really be washed off, instead of sitting on your skin – and because of their nature they`ll wash off quite easily in water.

Okatko, I also find that skin moisture helps water based serums to penetrate. Oil based serums apply a little better on drier skin. So basically, apply water based products straight after washing your face or having a shower. Then get ready, grab a tea/coffee while those products dry down and then go back and apply the oil based products. Once you develop a routine, you won`t even need to think about it.

Thanks Zanna B for your helpful advice.

Gotcha. Thanks skincare junkie for your help.

I think I need to get an eye serum/cream/miracle worker next. And that Dr LeWinns chemical peel looks interesting. I think that one’s on sale at CWH.

I may get it while on sale and then when I think my skin can cope I’ll try it out.

    • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Okatko, this may or may not be a concern for you, but DR. LEWINN`S Reversaderm Corrective Skin Peel contains alcohol – listed number three on the ingredients list which is quite high.

      • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

I’m not sure. What is the likely way my skin will react? Is it likely to be too drying or more that I’ll have a breakout because my skin is trying to compensate?

    • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Oh yes, the priceline goodie bags rarely include eye creams, even in a trial size.

Though I do remember getting a full size Dr Lewinn eye cream in aIl 2016 bag! Was very happy with that score

Noticed on a Priceline email today that they are offering 40% off Olay. Handy if you are planning moisturiser shopping!

  • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

I agree with Linda_Vesinger, I wouldn’t change too much at once. If you have further breakouts or find that your skin improves it can be too difficult to work out which product is doing what.

I also love the goody bags and always have a good read of the products at home and then separate out what I’m excited to try. Then I put the rest of the products aside and only pull them out when I’m finished (or close to finishing) my current products. The PAO dates are usually 6months, so I hate to open products to test and then know that they’re expiring on the shelf while I’m finishing what I’m using…although I will sheepishly admit that I DO have a MASSIVE amount of products in my “current” section….uummmm….

    • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

I know Zanna B. I’m not complaining AT ALL but there is so many goodies that I don’t know where to start. But I’ll pull them all out again and have another look hopefully this weekend.

  • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Very nice haul Oktako, I have used the other Jojoba Oil from that brand and love it. Such a great Aussie brand too.

I know the goody bag has an Olay cleanser, did you get a moisturiser in your bag too? My only moisturiser was a small tube from Nip & Fab.

While you’re trying your new regime, it could be helpful to stick with your current Cetaphil moisturiser. Just so you’re not changing too much at once. Then I’d suggest keeping an eye out for anywhere doing a decent Olay sale, buying the moisturiser to match your Essence. It’s a great range!

    • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

The only moisturiser I got was the nip&fab. I have continued to use my cetaphil cleanser as I still have heaps left of that. I was a bit stumped as to what to do with the self tanning mit as I don’t self tan then I thought dusting glove!!

    • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Hi Linda. Like you the only moisturiser I got was the Nip&Fab. For the Freeze Frame product I got the tummy tuck. Haha no amount of cream is gonna fix that!

    • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Thanks Linda. I haven’t started using the Jojoba oil yet. I have to admit that while the MUA recommended that one that I loved the look of the bottle.

I haven’t had a proper look at my goodies yet.

  • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

It’s a good start and goodie bag will have more products to use including the masks.

    • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

Thanks You beauty for your advice. I’m looking forward to having a proper look at my goodies! I have got a mask and a voucher to redeem for another mask.

  • 5 yrs, 11 mths ago

    Enjoy :))
