I am guilty of using cheap makeup…it kills me to use big brand names for things like eyebrows or mascara…all the money people waste on highlighter lol there is barely a difference…you can use a shimmer eye colour as highlighter it makes my head spin…no one ever gets through a Becca highlighter…come on!! you would be out of date by 4 years even if used every day.
Go Korean for lipsticks they are cheap and excellent plus long-lasting.
Invest in base makeup not other makeup…brands like colour pop do cheap eye shadows that work…besides how many eye colours or pallets do you need?
Get your brows micro bladed instead of using Anastasia of Beverly Hills…are other girls really going to know what brand you use? and seriously who cares…
I regularly wear no makeup at all as I have full confidence in my skin… I dye my thick brows as they are going grey and I just use concealer for dark under-eye……who would go out using the techniques we watch on youtube or using as much makeup as Kim K? not me I’m afraid…I just spend on skincare this keeping up with the Kardashians is ridiculous and no one should or would use Kylies skincare line it’s a real joke and really rubbish…end of rant

I love the way you think about makeup, Stell. I hate spending a lot on makeup, especially taking into consideration the amount of makeup I`ve had to throw away because it has gone bad. There`s times I am tempted to buy a from a more expensive brand after a case of FOMO and “”wanting what she has””, but mostly just can`t justify it.

(No shade to anyone that prefers high end)

Oh, and welcome to BH xx

        Thank you…Indie
I am old and wise …lol but believe me I have made my mistakes hopefully…
Seriously have you seen some of the YouTubers that do tours of their makeup storage rooms? OMG!! and yes I do know people donate stuff but to see it is the biggest form of consumerism I have ever seen same with jewellery collections [guilty] bags and shoes also skincare….
We all have a right to collect or have a hobby obsession whatever we want to call it but even shoes have a use-by date leather and plastic crack too…no wonder the world is full of trash …I am definitely guilty too…
My skincare is getting seriously out of hand I can only use so much…I have put myself on a ban and will have you just get my kicks from you girls LOL meanwhile I am going to try to use what I have after 3 months of barely any skincare due to illness I am living close to the edge with use-by dates lol
Browsing the aisles of ALDI last week I bought 2 facewashes …two FGS!! I know it only cost me $10 LOL but what was I thinking my skin is like sandpaper now!! I do actually never buy cheap face care…go figure Oh well more hand wash and rough hands.. we all do it

Oh yes, a lot of Youtubers makeup collections are out of control. I am now trying to get out of my hoarding ways. I want a collection that is not only products that I love, but a usable one, not something out of control. Well, apart from eye shadow palettes, not sure I will ever tame that addiction, lol.

Sorry to hear you have been unwell for so long, but I hope you are on the mend now, Stell.

Thank you for the well wishes…I appreciate it…yes I am slowly getting better…lack of energy is part of my illness so doing a full routine is dificult…but getting there…not looking forward to the long hot summer I must say, it makes using skincare a sticky hot business…

If you love eye pallets go for it I envy you as I am basically hopeless with them and admit it plus I have very hooded eyes that make it difficult a good cats eye is usually enough for me plus its way cheaper…I can do without another addiction! catch you later enjoy your Sat…Stell

A lot of makeup gets too old before I use it up, so I don`t bother spending too much either.

yes, it’s a selling post if anything which is not appropriate on bh

sorry if my post upset you merrygoround

such an effort to create an account just for 1 post

    • 4 yrs, 6 mths ago

Do you really think it’s spam? It wasn’t selling anything – not the page that was linked anyway, yes it then linked to some products but you don’t have to use/buy them, the advice stands up without it. I thought the tips were all quite sound. I’d be interested to what else they post before calling it. Maybe I’m too trusting.

    PART 2

Another great idea I got from several YouTuber’s is that you can use basic makeup staples for other than their intended purpose. If you search YT you will see tutorials where blush, bronzer, eyeshadow palettes etc are used all over the face.

Kathleen Lights and Wayne Goss recommend using your blush and bronzer as your main eye base ie in the crease and above then putting one colour on the lids and it looks so pretty. Also contouring with your bronzer (as long as it’s not shimmery). Liquid lipsticks can be used on the eyes as liners or blended out while wet as shadows (and they really stay put).

There’s looks achieved with a basic eyeshadow palette used as a bronzer, contour, highlighter, blush and lipstick! (add some to your lips then use lip balm). Great way to use up a palette and if you wait for 1/2 price specials it’s really cheap, great for travel too.

I’m the total opposite and have soooo much skincare it’s ridiculous! But some tips I can suggest to keep your costs down would be:

    • get on brand and retailer email lists, that way you will get advance notice of sales and can plan to spend
    • afterpay is an option on many beauty sites
    • join birthday clubs with brands, for eg. Sukin sent me out a free rosehip oil for my birthday
    • go to brand counters like Clinique etc who offer free skin consultations and they give you an assortment of free samples at the end of it
    • low cost and great ingredients in brands like The Ordinary are excellent performers for the price
    • if you have a friend who orders online a lot, get them to add your item to their order and you don’t have to minimum spend for free postage
    • join the many Facebook groups where users sell their unwanted products
    • the brand Simple is so good. It regularly goes on sale for 1/2 price in Coles, Woolies, Chemists Warehouse etc and their ingredients are fantastic. There’s a few products I use from them consistently even though I have many expensive items, I actually prefer the Simple version
    • ethelinde put me onto this one, but the Honey extension (download it and it goes on your browser) and each time you place an online order it scans the net for codes and applies the best one to your order. I place random orders all over the place and it ALWAYS has a great code, even for places that don’t have codes often like Chemists Warehouse.

      Fab tips duality!!

    • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

Such good tips Duality, I need to download Honey, I don`t buy a lot online but am finding I am using it more often than I used to for convenience. I always waste time looking for promo or discount codes before I place an order. Honey sounds good.

      • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

I’m hoping ethelinde will see this and drop her referral code because that way you get rewarded for it and so does she, and you can use the Honey rewards for discounts!

    • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

Hi duality, can you list the simple products you like. I have no experience with the brand and always looking for cheaper options. Thanks for always sharing your in depth experiences with us.

      • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

GeeJ the whole range is good, the cleansers, moisturizers, toners and in particular the makeup wipes. Tried high end wipes like Clinique and many others, Simple ones (regular not micellar water) work the best. My daughter has dry eczema prone skin and the Simple range is all she can use.

      • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

Thanks duality. I’m now looking out for Simple products to go on sale at the supermarket.

I’m trying to get into a good skincare regime but 1) I don’t want to use 101 products 2) don’t know where to begin and 3) don’t want to be spending HEAPS!

  • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

If your skincare regime is working, stick to it. This is the best way to “save money”, because you only buy what works for your skin.

I have an addiction to try new stuff. Most of my money actually gone to things that don’t work. How sad. But this is the same with people with other addiction issues, I guess…

  • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

I prioritize skincare in my budget. I rarely buy new clothes . I don’t wear much makeup. I do my own hair with my husbands help. But my splurge is skincare. Not necessarily expensive brands , but the best I can get for my skins needs, sometimes it’s worth spending more on something because it will last longer and work out cheaper in the long run. I always look out when sales are on , and often I buy something on Ebay if I feel it’s genuine and unopened, and as mentioned – water and moisturiser are the two must-haves above and beyond anything else.

    • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

I agree. It is all about prioritising. I see skincare as an investment. I seldom buy clothes and accessories. I haven`t bought a new handbag for maybe 5 years. I feel that if I am confident with my skin and my health, I don`t need expensive things to dress me up.

    • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

Agreed Lisa359 you can get some good bargains online. My friend can get her fav USA made makeup way cheaper online rather than buying in an Aussie shop/dept store.

  • 5 yrs, 2 mths ago

It’s expensive, (I’m guessing you’re young, maybe under 30? Sorry if I’m horribly off mark) but it’s important to know your needs vs your wants. As a woman approaching middle age I easily see the value in investing in skincare, more than makeup. I’ve learned about what I need for my skin, what I want and what I can do for it to look great.

I’ve learned about my own skin, combination, olive, enlarged pores. And what I need for it, good Vitamin C, good salicylic acid, and what I can skimp on (the Essence pencil eyeliner was better for me than the twice purchased Marc Jacobs one which is 20x the cost but I kept buying just because it worked so great for everyone else).

Learn about yourself, your needs, and focus on active ingredients, many of the skincare products here can be substituted for other less expensive brands. In the end it’s easy to spend a lot when you don’t know exactly what you need (or how to achieve it).

    Ask for samples 🙂
