DIY Skin Care

I thought I’d start a dedicaed thread for all skincare DIY so it is in one easy location for everyone to reference.

There will be 2 variants of DIY skincare: the natural way using homemade ingredients and the scientific one using active ingredients specifically sourced to mix your own creams and products.

Claraflo shared with us a great natural enzyme mask using kiwi fruit and it was great. I’ll copy it in this thread for easy referencing as well as add in my own experimentation of it.

RECIPE: CLARAFLO’S KIWI ENZYME MASK
1/2 green kiwi mashed (with spoon or a blender stick)
2 teaspoon honey
1/2 teaspoon apricot kernel oil (or avocado or sweet almond)

Mix all ingredients together. IF you find it too running, add in some natural yoghurt to thicken it up and then slather on your face.

Leave on skin for as long as you like or until you feel a tingling sensation. This could be 4 minutes or could be 15, depending on your skin sensitivity. Be sure to leave it on for no more than 20mins as the acid in the kiwi could eat away your top layer of your skin.

This mask is great as a gentle peel and will leave your skin soft and help reduce any flaky skin conditions you might be suffering as it makes it easier to scrub/rub off the dead skin cells.

Do not use more than twice a week as it could be too much for your skin. Use common sense, if your skin is sensitive, use it less frequently and find a frequency that is suitable for your skin.

    Perk Me Up Eyemask

Grate 1/3 fresh cucumber with a cheese grater. Mix the cucumber with a generic face cream (cold creme, sorbolene is fine). Add a few drops of neroli essential oil (3% blend in jojoba oil is fine) for skin regenerative boost and gorgeous smell. Apply to the eye area and leave on for 10+ mins. Rinse off.

This is extremely soothing to the eyes and cucumber does contain gentle levels of AHA’s. Use every second day and your eyes will be less puffy, less dark circles and I find it makes the skin appear firmer and more hydrated than normal. Extremely good for fine lines. Also nicely relaxing.

Kiwi Enzyme Mask – that mask is an aggressive exfoliator and should never be used around the eye area. If irritation occurs discontinue use, a patch test is recommended before first use.

Dry skin moisturiser, suitable even for the eye area. Makes about 60mls

    1 Tblsp pure lanolin
1.5 tblsp of oil of your choice (I use a mix of apricot, rosehip and avocado totaling up to 1.5 tblsp. Use only light oils as the lanolin is very emollient on it’s own.)
2 tblsp rosewater (plain distilled water can also be used)

Lanolin is a natural emulsifer that can bind water and oil up to twice it’s volume. Heat the lanolin and oils together in a double boiler until combined. Heat the rosewater separately to bring it up to tepid temperature. If you don’t do this the cream will split when you combine them. Use a stick blender or a whisk and while blending slowly add in the rosewater a little bit at a time. The mixture will emulsify to become a cream that is very stable. Keep blending until cream has cooled to almost room temperature. Refrigerate and use.

This cream will feel very thick when applied to the skin. Apply it just before getting in the shower and by the time you finish the cream will have soaked into your skin. This moisturiser is highly effective and you only need to use it once per day. It also makes a brilliant handcreme for all skin types. If you want a lighter consistency use an emulsifying wax and add more water to the mix. This will create a lighter more mousse like cream. If you dislike the smell about 10 drops of rose geranium oil will mask it nicely.

You can source pure lanolin from most chemists. Look for the 100ml jar labelled Anhydrous Lanolin in the baby care section. It will set you back about $10. Take care because some lanolins are actually a mixture of lanolin, mineral oil and water. So make sure you buy the pure stuff.

Mix Yoguht with honey for a face mask for normal-comb skin
    Leave on for about 2-4mins

    Olive oil and sugar scrub

Approx. 1 Tablespoon of white sugar
Approx. 3 Tablespoons of olive oil

Mix the sugar and oil together, it should be a tiny bit more liquid then a paste but not runny. Scrub face and/or body and rinse.

For anyone that doesnt want to use oil: Baking soda mixed into a paste with water also works great.

    RECIPE: ROSEHIP OIL SERUM
    makes 30 mls

    10ml organic rose hip oil
    10ml jojoba oil
    5ml evening primrose oil
5ml vitamin E (broken from capsules)

Mix all ingredients together and put into a bottle, container. Great as a treatment oil of fading scars, tightening and firm skin texture, plumping up dehydrated skin (eg. under eye area).
It also makes a fantastic nail and cuticle oil.

Can be used day and night. Anyone who finds it too oily to use during the day should only use it during night time as an intensive treatment.
