Diane 35 for skin

I had quite bad skin when I was younger, and at 17, after trying a million different topical creams that totally did not work I went on the Diane pill (or Estelle which is the cheaper version).

Hail Diane, she was a god send for me! She improved my complexion immensely and it was one of the best things I ever did. I do remember getting a bit depressed in the first 6 months or so but after a while it cleared up and I do not believe it has effected me in anyway like that since.

I am now 24 so I have essentially been on this for 7 years. I still need contraception so I don’t have any reason to go off it yet, but I am wondering when in the hell I ever will… I was wondering what other people’s experiences with Diane have been – how long did you stay on it and what happened when you went off it?

Also interested to find out if people have used Diane and then moved to Yasmin and how this compared?? I have heard this is a better pill, not so high in hormones or something. But, does it really give as good results for skin?

    Hi cmaff
I started taking a cheaper pill when I was
A teen and I always had nice clear skin growing up. But when I was in my late 20`s I had some allergic reaction and got dermatitis on my face so I started taking Diane and it quickly cleared my face so I decided to stay on it. I was on it for over 10 years and had never had any side effects from it but when I decided to stop it I did start having some breakouts which was weird for me as I`ve never had breakouts or acne before.

It`s absolutely true that one side effect of the pill (any pill) is blood clots. However, it is a very rare side effect and very unlikely to happen to you. Nevertheless it can happen- for a young woman the chance is very slight. The risk increases with age, if you smoke, and if you have other risk factors for blood clots which might include a genetic tendency towards clotting, previous history of clotting, recovering after major surgery and long term immobilisation. When clots happen to young people it`s usually because of a genetic tendency.

The symptoms of a blood clot can include redness and swelling of one calf (one side only), particularly if it has happened after something like a really long-haul plane flight. Most clots won`t travel to your lungs and cause serious issues, but if you get one you have to go off the pill for life.

So basically you just need to weigh up the pros and cons- a really really unlikely side effect (although as Linda has already mentioned it can happen and can be very serious if it does) versus whatever benefits the pill can give you.

This whole blood clot thing is the reason I have stayed away from these acne clearing pills. I was prescribed Dianne but decided not to take it after some research. Although the Dr. said they all pretty much have the same chance of producing clots I think some have been more publicized. I have high cholesterol so I wouldn`t take the chance.
