I’m reviving this thread (there was two on this topic).

I’m leaving for a big family holiday to Hawaii on Thursday! (going to the main island and the big island). I’m very excited and just wanting to gather some info.

Any other tips that I may not have read here on shopping, customs, tourist attractions, things to watch out for etc.

Would love to hear your travel stories and recommendations. 🙂

How exciting! It has been a while since I was there, but Paradise Cove Luau was a great experience. Kualoa Ranch – this where a lot of movies and tv shows are filmed but they also have activities like atv riding, horses, bush buggies etc. We also did the Atlantis Submarine Tour. These are just a few of the things that we did. Some of the hotels have tour desks that can help you out with things to see and do as well. I’m sure whatever you do over there you will love it. Have a great trip!

I really want to go to a luau while we are there to get the whole experience! I was unaware of the ranch til a friend told me about it. Thanks for the tips. Hopefully our hotel has one of those. Is the submarine tour something to do with pearl harbour? I haven’t heard any bad reports about Hawaii hopefully the weather is nice for us, there’s been rain predicted all week so fingers crossed it clears for When we arrive next week

Going to a Luau is definitely part of the Hawaiian experience! The submarine tour is seperate to Pearl Harbour, it is just off waikiki beach – you catch a boat out to the submarines and then they take you under the water where you can see out of the port holes to look at all the fish/marine life and different man made reefs etc. It was something different to do – only took a few hours from memory. The weather should be nice, although you never can tell. we travelled at this time as well – in ’07!

Went there last year and rent a car and drove around the whole of Oahu. The island is amazing and deserves to be visited all round. East and West coast are very different from each other, North Shore is amazing and we even went to Turtle beach which is a beach in the North Shore where you are very likely to see turtles (and we swam with one). Absolutely in love with the place and getting married there this year!! 🙂 oh and if you are looking for a guide I got “Oahu revealed” which is supposed to be one of the best guides if you want the insight tips. And we did find off the main road places that we would have never gone to without this guide. Enjoy your holiday!!

Oh that sounds like a dream! Gives me tingles just thinking about it! Thank you so much for the info. We haven’t really planned any activities yet (besides shopping LOL) but I will keep this in mind.

If you can get to the Big Island, hire a car and take in the volcanoes. They’re magic. The lava flow is so slow I stood on red-hot, newly formed earth. Amazing! And if in Maui, look out for the black sand beaches.

We will be on the island of Oahu. Is it very expensive to fly to the other islands?

Thank you for the tips. Is shaved ice a slushy type thing?

my understanding is that shaved ice.. is what we call ‘snow cones’ here.
