Beauty salons from a Health Inspector’s perspective

Most evenings I spend my time browsing BH but during the day, I work in local government as a heath inspector aka Environmental Health Officer. I thought I could share some of the not-so-hygienic experiences I have come across in some salons as well as some tips to make sure that the salon you are visiting is implementing correct infection control and hygiene practices….

The first and foremost when getting a manicure or pedicure is to ensure all single use, disposable items such as nail buffers, nail files and toe separators are new and not reused! Implements such as cuticle cutters/scissors should be sterilised in an autoclave. The beautician/nail technician should open the autoclave pouch in your presence, just prior to them performing the treatment. If they don’t do this, run! Also let your local council’s environmental heath officer know, so they can investigate.

More to come! In the meantime, feel free to ask any questions 🙂

This is a great thread – would love to hear people’s horror stories.

this is going back years ago now but I was getting a pedicure at a little local salon and she dug too deep when taking off my dead skin and I started to bleed. She told me not to worry about it and put some peroxide on it to stop the bleeding. It worked for a while until I walked home and my shoe started to fill with blood. I never bothered returning!

Katieloves I don’t go to a salon. Mainly as I am horrified by the cost. Second I don’t like the gross factor, I’ve heard of fungal infections etc. The most grossed out I am is by those fish that eat dead skin. Hello hepatitis.

Macquarie centre has a new one of those nail places opening – in the food court, next to a health food cafe.

I can’t stand the smell of chemicals when you walk past those nail bars. I prefer to do my own manicures and pedicures.

I never go to nail salons either as I have a massive fear of getting an infection from one of those places. I’d rather DIY & that way I know (or at least feel) I’m safe.

Not into getting Botox or fillers so don’t have to worry about that, but it’s amazing how many people go for cheaper options when it comes to both cosmetic & plastic surgery. I’ve kinda got hooked on the show Botched recently & just seeing those horror stories with my own eyes is enough to turn me off mucking about with my body or my face.
