If you have ever wondered how clean or unclean makeup testers are, you may wish to look at the following report by CBS News. The reporter swabbed makeup testers from various stores and had them analysed:

If you are very obsessive about germs, then maybe you shouldn’t watch the video!

Oh gosh, I was in Priceline yesterday and I was looking for something in particular and there was this girl putting a tester lipstick straight onto her lips. I couldn’t stand by and just made a comment to her because I had just seen another girl a few minutes before do the same thing with the same lipstick. The lipstick was horrible looking so god knows who has used it.

The lass got talking with me and she now says never again will she apply something straight onto her lips or eyes. I mentioned to her about BH so she will probably join up as she was only about 17 if that.

Thank you to the people that commented on this topic! I don’t have anything more constructive to say except that 1,593 people (at the moment) have viewed this thread, so hopefully some people have found it helpful.

Nope. With lipsticks I just try them on my arms most of the time. Never seen stores that allow mascaras to be tested out though.

I think I only ever test on my hands. With foundation I usually go in and put a bit of the foundation that I know matches me then go around putting small blobs next to it so I can match the colour that way.

I didn’t expect anything different from the video tbh. I hardly use testers and IF I do I wipe it with tissues and then apply it on my hand only.

Make up testers: is this a test to see how resilient you are to germs? Anyone with half a brain should know not to share testers. It’s just like double dipping into a dip! Hand cream perhaps. If you can waste the first bit out of the tube just to be sure. Foundations now do come in sample packs, mascara NEVER. Same with eye shadow or blush. Good thing we get to test products with Beauty Heaven!

I only use them on the back of my hand, I don’t wear or buy much makeup and I usually just take a guess when I buy things,
I don’t stuff-up much so I must be more educated about it than I thought. . I’m more inclined to rub a tester of handcream or moisturiser, just for fun really – to moisturise the back of my hands

The first thing that comes to mind with the eye makeup tester is conjunctivitis, eew!

Try not to use makeup testers as much as possible your absolutely right you don’t know if the person before you had cold sores or some other disease.

If I have to use a tester I get a tissue provided and rub the top first including lipsticks, for foundation I always use some on the inside of my hand.

Testers are definitely not that hygienic at all.

If I want to test a lipstick on my lips, I’ll often ask an SA to sanitise it first as I highly doubt the tester is clean. I have seen people testing makeup as if the testers are clean & I want to scream at them….but then I figure “let them go & make their own mistakes”. If they get a cold sore, not my problem.

Generally I test everything on my hand anyway. I never test a mascara, but I will open up the tube to have a look at the brush. Foundation I’ll pump out & put a bit on the side of my face as I figure that’s generally encased in a tube (unless it’s a cream compact, then I’ll test that on my hand)…unless it looks festy of course.
