The art of applying eye liner on top lids

Can someone give me tips on how to apply on the top lid? I have so many eye liners but I seem to smudge it or its uneven. I usually hold the lid down and try to apply on top. Is there an easier way?

The way I learnt to apply it is with a felt tip pen liner or a gel liner using an extremely thin and pointy brush. It’s always good to mark your ending point, middle and start with a eyeliner pencil as well then going over it as it’s much easier removing pencil liner than a liquid liner! And practice makes perfect!

I suck at doing this, so now I just only use eyeliner in my waterline

I’ve got a weird method: I go from left to right. I’m right-handed. I do my right eye from the outside to inside, then my left eye from the inside to the outside. I think the end results are more important than the technique you use. It’s harder to put into words than to demonstrate, so I’d watch a few YouTube tutorials. Practice a few techniques to see what you find works for you.

Whether I use a liquid liner (fave method) or a pencil, I always apply right into the lashline more than the lid.

Find one that you’re comfortable holding and using. I went through a number of different types and brands before finding my favourite go to.

After that, it’s as simple as ‘practice makes perfect’. Maybe not ‘simple per say’ but you know what I mean lol It took myself, dare I say, months of trying before I finally got the hang of it.

I usually start from the inner corner and work my way out. Don’t try and do it all in one big swoop. Little strokes.

You’ll nail it in no time.

I tilt my head down and put one hand on the outer corner of my eyelid and slightly stretch it outwards a bit. Then I tilt the eyeliner down into my lash line if that makes sense,? Start applying from the outer corner of your eye and work your way into the middle.. Hope it helps…

The first few times I started puting on eyeliner, I was using a crappy pencil, leading to the lines being wonky, uneven and always smudging. I was a total newbie. My friend, who was much more experienced with makeup, noticed and took me into a Mecca Maxima store ASAP to introduce me to the Stila Stay All Day Eyeliner. At first I was super intimidated that it was a liquid eyeliner, but soon I was creating perfect wings and getting tons of compliments – and it took no effort at all!

These eyeliners don’t come off until you want them to come off. They’re true to their name and stay on ALL DAY. It’s $31 but is so worth the investment. One pen lasts me a year, the pigmentation is insane (jet black) and it lasts perfectly from when I leave the house to when I come home.

I find the easiest way to do it is to rest your elbow on a steady surface and look straight into the mirror, then slowly trace at your natural lash line. Extend it out to the natural curve of your eye – not too high and not too low. This way it makes your eyes appear bigger and more defined. Don’t pull on the eyelid as that alters the skin, so when you let go, it won’t be where you placed it or where you wanted it.

makeupcatxo, I must buy the Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner. I`ve had it in my shopping cart a few times and then I changed my mind. I find liquid eyeliners with long applicators and tips are tricky to use.

I`m surprised that you`ve kept your liquid eyeliner for a year. The suggested expiry date for liquid eye products is three or four months.

  • I find it a lot easier to tilt my head back & look down my nose to do my eyeliner. That way, both of my eyes are open and I can see what I’m doing much more clearly. It also really helps me ensure the liner on both eyes is symmetrical. It’s also easier to draw dots/dashes along the lash line & then connect them, rather than drawing one long, continuous line.
