New beauty subscription box – “LUMI BOX”. Thoughts?

So I keep getting targeted ads for a new subscription box that has launched this month called “Lumi Box” and it looks amazing! Looking at their site, they claim to only provide full-size products and deal with brands like Too Faced, Tarte, Stila, Hourglass, etc. From what I understand, the base box ($49) per month comes with at least 4 full size (1+ high end) beauty products and the premium box ($99) per month comes with at least 7 (3+ high end). They also have this thing called the ‘pop-up’ store where once a month, subscribers can purchase high-end products at up to 80% off. I’m not entirely clear on this but I imagine they are what is left over from the boxes.

Right yes, I know this sounds a lot like a promotion but its not, honest! I’m just really excited and want to know what you guys think as it just seems like one of those things that is too good to be true. I guess this is just on a whole other level compared to other boxes we currently have in Aus. The other thing that makes me a bit uncomfortable is I read a comment from someone else expressing their disappointment that they don’t accept Paypal for the subscriptions (but they do for the pop-up store).
Website is lumibox.com.au if anyone wants to give me their thoughts.
I’m tempted but I’m not sure if I’m comfortable enough being a guinea pig.

I was so curious when this subscription box launched! I thought it was super strange though that none of the brands are being tagged in the posts and that there weren’t many duplicate boxes.

Update – I received my base box on the weekend! I was pleasantly surprised. I can’t recall the retail prices of everything but I tallied it up to be about $140 worth (for $49). The products I received were (everything full size):

Zoeva Caramel Melange Eyeshadow Palette (the full size one),
Grace and Stella Undereye Masks (set of 12 pairs),
    Covergirl Exhibitionist Mascara,
18 in 1 Styling Smoothing Cream (from what I gather, it’s a thermal protectant),
    Pair of earrings, and a
Travel size Nars black eyeliner (bonus for subscribing in August)

The only thing I wasn;t thrilled about was the earrings as I don’t wear earrings and I specified this in the beauty quiz they provide, but customer service were really helpful when I notified them and they have made a note on their system so that earrings will always be substituted for something else in future.

    Verdict – I’m very happy!

As a new company, (they only registered in July this year), personally I’m not surprised they don’t take payment for the sub boxes via Paypal, as the odds are completely stacked in the customers’ favor for them to simply get their money back, as well as keep the goods, leaving the company highly out of pocket. Paypal are a totally scummy organisation, and I would never be wary of a business not using them. It might also be their web platform shop doesn’t allow PayPal for sub boxes, but does the shop, as there are certain platforms you can only do certain things on (I run a business so have issues with things like this via our website – we are currently upgrading to sort out some of these little quirks)

Personally I think it’s like anything – if you have that much spare cash to throw in the bin, its worth the risk – that’s not being negative, its a policy I apply to any new purchase that’s not essential in my life, from buying a new flavour ice cream scoop, to a new salad dressing at the supermarket, or a pair of underpants in a new style, shade of lippy, or raved about only available online tights or something. If you can’t really afford to throw the money away, don’t touch it – if its disappointing you feel betrayed and upset. However, if its ‘fun money’ that you don’t use to pay bills, don’t put towards paying down debt or into savings, then give it a whirl – best case you find something awesome, worst case, you don’t get the nice thing you were hoping for but its not the end of the world and no-one died.

You can order a meal at a restaurant and be disappointed – nothing inherently wrong with it, just not as yummy as you were expecting – so I look on things like this as the same. 🙂 If you do go for it, let us know how it was? 😀
