My neck and my face are different colours- help!

I find it so so hard to buy foundation because my freckles make my face look a lot darker than my neck, which is very white.

When I buy foundation that matches my neck it can make me look way to white on my face.

I’m not sure what advice could be given to fix this, but would love any tips!

Thankyou!

maggieeeeb, you may also like to experiment with a powder-based foundation – especially 100% mineral powder foundations. If you applied a light dusting of the powder, this will give you just enough coverage to even out your face, yet it will allow your freckles to be visible.

Some 100% mineral powder foundations have a subtle white cast to them. Once you’ve applied the rest of your makeup, the white cast is not as noticeable.

I have very pale skin on my face. I have mild redness from broken capillaries on my nose and cheeks. The redness is not severe, but it’s enough for me to buy foundations with medium to full coverage. I suspect that the skin on my face is a neutral undertone, but I’m not 100% sure. The skin on my neck is slightly darker with a warm undertone. The skin on the centre of my chest is a bit darker from when I used to fry my skin in the sun in my teens (in the days when sun safety wasn’t discussed).

Every single sales assistant and MAC makeup artist recommends foundations that are much darker than I’d choose – MAC makeup artists seem to be the worst! It took me a while to realise that it must be the broken capillaries that have been throwing off the sales assistants; thus prescribing darker shades.

After one MAC sales assistant (almost arrogantly) insisted that my shade selection of a pale foundation was incorrect, I took a friend foundation shopping with me. We went out into full sun where she would check the foundation match after an assistant applied foundation. The shades that the assistants chose were always very dark and yellow/orange.

I try to find foundations that have a neutral undertone; this is difficult as I’m pale. If a neutral shade is not available, I choose a warm undertone because this helps to minimise redness. I blend the foundation into my neck area.

I have a white foundation that I mix with darker foundations to give a better colour match. The white foundation is available from professional makeup supply stores. It is FACEatelier Ultra Foundation Pro in Zero Minus. This is expensive but I only need a tiny amount so it lasts me a long time. There are, however, cheaper white foundations available.

When i am shopping for foundation, i usually use the departmental stores one. I have to be thick skinned and ask for a few different shades of sample and try them at home to see what works better.
Perhaps try a light coverage or dewy coverage so it doesn’t cover all your freckles and you look more natural?

This is exactly like me. My freckles make my face look darker than my snow white neck. If I match my neck the foundation is too light and ghost-like on my face. Even when I’m colour matched professionally it’s still an issue, because it’s impossible to find a shade that blends the face with the neck without it being either too dark for my neck or too light for my face.

I find I’m better off with a more natural coverage, such as a BB cream or tinted moisturiser and bring that down to my neck. This blends into the neck better than a heavier foundation that can look more obvious on the neck. I find neutral tones work better too – warm or cool foundations and creams look either too yellow or pink against my neck. I also sometimes apply a light fake tan to my neck to help it blend.

I would suggest scanning the makeup counters for someone with similar skin as they will have a better idea of how to match you successfully.

I would pick a brand of foundation that you like then when you have half they day go to the store that sells it and test the shades that will make it right with the assistance of a consultant. Thats what I would do. Good luck !

Can you put a bit of bronzer on your neck to darken it up a bit? Or put foundation on your neck so your face and neck are the same shade?

I second this! Apply your foundation down your neck to help match your face

I was going to give the same advice, bring the foundation down or add bronzer. If you feel like bronzer is too much maybe opt for a powder foundation in a shade that helps add colour naturally?

I think most people have this issue. If it is that different, I’d go to the Makeup Counter in David Jones; Myer; Makeup outlet or any of the larger Pharmacies and talk to the Makeup Artist about your needs and get them to use some products on your face &/or neck.
If you are not happy with the result first time around, shop around for another Makeup Artist.
