Doing your make up

I’ve seen a few GRWM you tube videos now and in each one they always do concealer after foundation. I’m just wondering if that’s how it’s meant to be done? As I thought it was always concealer first and then foundation. I don’t often wear make up so have I been doing it wrong all of this time?

I do skincare first, and then eye makeup. That way I can clean up any fall out or mess etc. Then I prime, foundation or tinted moisturiser, concealer, blush. Last step for me is my beloved Guerlain Meteorites. I know they are expensive but the tin lasts a long time, and I couldn’t live without them. And they smell so gorgeous.

I think you should do whatever works for you! I use to do concealer first but started doing foundation and then concealer (I think after seeing it on YouTube videos) and find that works for me. My skin concern is also covering redness and my concealer moves around too much if put on under the liquid foundation. I also use significantly less concealer putting it on after foundation as my foundation does a pretty good job of covering and I go in with the concealer just in the areas that need it. Considering per gram my concealer is more expensive than my foundation, I’m pretty happy with that!

I always do skincare, then primer, then liquid foundation, then concealer, finishing with setting or baking anywhere that I concealed with powder, then setting spray. It’s a good process and works for me. I used to try to conceal before foundation but the concealer never performs as well underneath foundation.

I’ll put my MUA hat on. We were taught, liquid concealer goes on after foundation, as it is wiped off after you apply another liquid over it. With powders you can be more flexible. I still apply after though, on what has not been covered by your foundation. For rosacea, a mineral powder with yellow based tone is layered until everything is covered. Hope this helps.

I only use concealer for my dark under eye circles. I apply a peach colour corrector, then apply foundation. To avoid cakiness under my eyes, I miss this area so that I’m not applying too much product there. I then apply my concealer.

I used to apply concealer first, but found that the above method worked better for me. I think you just need to experiment to see what works for you. There’s no “right” or “wrong” 🙂

I don`t really have dark under eyes so only use concealer to cover the rosacea redness, I`ll try putting it on last before the powder and setting spray.

I was told by the makeup artist at an official MAC event to use concealer after foundation.

I believe if you put concealer first and then the foundation it slides around and moves if that makes sense?

Assuming this would be with liquid products as that is what was used on us. But everyone’s skin is different so it may work to put conceal first. I don’t think there is a “right or wrong” way everyone does it different and if your way works I would stick with it 🙂

Thanks for your comment about foundation sliding off as maybe that`s what is happening.

Very good question, I also put concealer on last after I have put the foundation and then the setting powder, only because it seems to work better, just dab it on lightly.

Guess it depends on what you like, try it both ways and see which one has a more lasting effect.

I put my concealer on first then apply foundation as that was the way a sale assistant from Priceline showed me.

That`s how I do it too but seeing these videos makes me think I`m doing it wrong.

One factor to consider is the consistency of your products: liquid, cream or powder. In general, apply the wettest product first: liquid before cream, cream before powder.

Another factor to consider is what you’re concealing: dark rings around your eyes, redness or pimples? Conceal dark rings before foundation: conceal zits after foundation.

But others will tell you different again, so what should you do? Try both methods & do what works for you, Andrea!

Thanks for the reply misfortune8, I`m trying to cover redness from rosacea as it`s really bothering me. Currently I`m using a moisturiser then a concealer then a tinted moisturiser with a bit of foundation mixed into it then a redness reducing powder over all the that.

Oh rosacea, Andrea! That`s a lot of different products you`re using on your skin.

My Mum`s got rosacea: she says sometimes her cheeks hurt so much they feel like they`re going to bleed! She likes Invisible Zinc Tinted Daywear: she doesn`t just use it as makeup, she sits watching TV at night, dabbing on the IZ because it takes the sting out of her cheeks!
