Does Make up go off?

I swear I can smell my mascara – does it go off?

It expires when it’s empty hahaha. For real though, the little icon with the number is how long. Macaras and eyeliners are roughly 6 months, powders can be 1-2 years (but you can use rubbing alcohol to keep them more sanitary) and can last a lot longer. Foundations and concealers depend on the applicator.

Basically anything where the applicator goes straight onto your face is gonna need to be thrown out in a shorter timeframe because bacteria will start to grow and can cause infections. Mascaras are the most important to adhere to though.

Yes just like food has an expiry date so does our makeup. That’s why I love products with a great designed to secure the product properly.

I would bin it if it smells odd. My kit mascaras usually do not last for 3 + months anyway, but personal mascaras I would use for about 6 months.

It absolutely does, and yet I still have very old makeup that I’ve been hanging on to even though I hardly use it… oops

Yes, mascara should be thrown out after a month or two.

    I agree NellAdams.

Possibly controversial but I’m big on ‘wing it’. I hate rules about throwing out and replacing expensive products.

If it looks, smells or feels off, I bin it. Otherwise I keep it. It doesn’t sound nice but that’s the honest truth… and it’s never caused me any problems.

As the others have said, in this case it’s definitely a sign it needs replacing! But just wanted to speak out for all my other beauties who just don’t follow the “this long” rules either – you’re not alone!

I’m exactly the same. I will use a product unless it smells or looks off, and that’s only happened rarely with products I’d forgotten about. I’ve never thrown out a mascara before it’s been finished, I don’t care if it’s over 6 months old. There are some products I have used years after they were first opened and I’ve never had any issues.

Cynically, I think some of these recommendations are a bit of a marketing ploy to make you think you need to throw your products out and buy new ones.

yes make sure to clean out all your beauty products every 6 months its not good to use out of date products!

I agree I keep products until they are finished too unless they have been open for ages. But if something smells definitely throw it out.

If it starts smelling different or the consistency or colour changes or generally looks different that’s when you know to get rid of it.
