smokey eyes make me look like ive been bashed

I love the smokey eyeshadow look but it always makes me look like i have been bashed and copped black eyes. If i try pinks or browns, same result. The only colour i can wear that suits me is pale blue. Ive even had my make up done by professionals who all said i would suit the smokey look but then had to remove it cos i looked like a mugging victim. I want fashionable eyes & pale blue is just not fashionable. Has anyone ever had this problem & successfully overcome it. I have golden blonde hair & blue eyes with a ruddy complexion

MsSparkles, I had this issue before. I think the best way is to apply primer as tightrope mentioned so that the eyeshadow don’t smudge. And apply the primer to both on the eyelid and under the eyes. And if you do use an under-eye concealer, make sure you set it with powder since this will help avoid the smudging.

I have this issue. I just stick to a winged eyeliner look now, with no smokey eye. I find that smokey eye always looks amazing, until an hour later and I look like I’ve been heavily beaten lol

If the issue is that the eyeshadow smudges or moves around, maybe you can try an eye primer to keep it in place and looking fresh? I like mac paint pots or milani shadow eyez but too faced shadow insurance, urban decay primer potion and nars eye primer are popular and I know australis, face of australia and models prefer have them.

I love a brown smokey eye and think it looks great with blue eyes. If you are having trouble with a traditional smokey eye, I would try doing it more sideways than vertical, using a light colour on the inner lid and gradually transitioning to darker at the outer corner. Less is more, especially if you are very fair! If you like blue, try using silver as the lightest shade and navy as the darker colour.

I have fair skin, sandy blonde hair and blue eyes. I love the smokey eye look too and it suits me really well 🙂 especially silver and black! Stick to silver and black and then when you become good at applying the eyeshadow try other colours, but I reccommend not using pinks or browns at all cause they make anyone look like they have bruised eyes haha!

I agree with shopaholic555. I would say its not the colours so much but where the colour is being placed. Certain eye shapes (ie hooded, monolid, small) do not suit smokey eye look but should instead opt for a glamour eye. Smokey eye looks make the eye look smaller as the lid is covered in a dark colour. Same way contouring makes areas look smaller/less obvious, smokey eye looks do the same. I think thats probably why you’re ending up with a ‘bashed in the eye’ kind of look. I would opt for a lighter colour on the lid and stick to darker colours in the crease, outer corner. A lighter colour on the lid will make your eyes look brighter, even with a darker colour in the crease. Thus avoiding the delightful sucker punched look 🙂

These are great tips. I will try golds and champagne colours, I think they will look great with a wine-coloured lipstick.

as some girls suggested, try slightly lighter versions, browns and bronzes might work better for you 🙂

I have fair skin, blue eyes and I find really dark smokey eyes to be too harsh. I tend to opt for bronze & browns.

I am very pale and redness prone with blue/green eyes – I have dark hair but I know what you mean about looking like you’ve got a black eye. I had dismissed the idea of doing an “aspiring blogger” entry for the Blogstar awards, but I might have a go at it after all. I have my easy smokey eye technique down pat and it might work for you too. I had photos in the original EOTD thread but it died 🙁 The trick is to keep the deepest shaded areas to a minimum – you think you need it but you really don’t, just the outer lid edge, outer 1/3 of the upper lash line, and smudged through the crease is enough to give a smoked effect without looking too dark.
