Skin Issues due to sanitiser use

Hi everybody,

At work we have a number of sanitisers that we’re using throughout the day. We’re washing our hands constantly and I’ve ended up with dry hands and what seems to be some type of itchy, red skin issue on my thumbs. (Dermatitis?)

I’ve never had any skin issues on my hand like this before but I was aware that alcohol based sanitisers are damaging to the skin. I was wondering if anyone has some advice on this issue?

Do you know any types or brands of sanitiser that are less harsh on the skin? Anything that will fix this skin issue?

I believe we have a Palmolive foaming, antibacterial hand wash and I’m not sure of the sanitiser we have (both were all we could find at the time).

Appreciate any responses. Thank you 🙂

The use of sanitizers is important, but do not forget to wash your hands and after washing your hands make use of the moisturizers. After using the hand sanitizers, wait for a few minutes for the hand sanitizer to dry and then apply moisturizers. You may also get hand moisturizers and they are better than the body moisturizers as these are designed specifically for hands and gives you complete relief from cracked and dry skin. If still nothing is working then you must meet the dermatologist as some people need prescription ointment for dry hands. Hope this can help.

The Body Shops Hemp Hand cream was an absolute godsend for me last year.

The store I work at dries my hands out anyway (stupid aircon) but on top of the constant sanitizing and hand washing, they were so dry and cracked that it hurt!
Slathering on that hand cream and wearing cotton gloves is what got my hands through 2020 unscathed LOL

After COVID disappears, I never want to see a hand sanitser again!

Body shop shea butter and cetaphil moisturising cream are great for dry skin too.

Oh yes. I have had the same results from using so much sanitiser. (Funnily enough, I have been using it for years…always keep a little container in my car for use after getting petrol. However, never had to use it constantly !) I have found that Weleeda skin food (thanks B.H for choosing me to trial this.) massaged in at bed time, then wearing cotton gloves overnight really sooths and nourishes.

I think we all have enough of sanitizers at the moment. For whoever makes them this year must be a dream year. As for rest of us….we definitely hate it. My skin is dry and peeling on my hands. Working at customer service I see fed up people every day and they can’t wait to see the end of these sanitizers

I think we all have enough of sanitizers in our lives. I work in customer service and after months of understanding and co-operation we have more and more people refusing to use sanitizers when they come into the building.. Personally my skin is peeling, especially between my thumb and my pointing finger. It’s good to be sanitizer producer nowadays, isn’t it?

i was recently going to start my 2 weeks annual leave break (our employer is encouraging everyone to use excess leave) and was ask by my superior what were my plans for these 2 weeks. My answer was: “To moisturise”. We all suffer from this pandemic. I work in customer service and after months of understanding and compliance, more and more people express hostility when you ask them to sanitize their hands before entering. Strange and sad times….

Hey I know I am late to the party, but given that covid looks like its here to stay for a while – I’ve found Perfect Potion’s hand sanitiser not as harsh and some other brands (it smells fab as well). I carry a little spray bottle of it in my handbag and one in my nappy bag all the time. As a bonus you can buy large refill bottles for refilling the little spray bottles – so better for the environment too.
I’ve also found Weleda skin food to be a really good hand moisturiser for frequent washing as well – you can also grab that in a handbag size and a little goes a long way 🙂

Need to take your own natural one, look on the Biome website, I knew this would start causing people problems, and here it is happening, also can you ask if you can wear gloves instead?
