Seeking beauty experts for skincare overhaul! :)

Hey beauty experts!!

I’m seeking some advice on a skincare overhaul!

I’m in my mid-30s and starting to show signs of aging on my neck and eyes in particular & I still get breakouts along the t-zone.

I’ve tried to do some research but get a little overwhelmed with the number of options available.

I’m currently using:
– Skinstitut L-Lactic
– Witch Hazel
– The Ordinary B Oil
–  Retinol 0.5% in Squalane
– ESSANO Rosehip Moisture Restorative Night Crème

I have a modest budget so would love some suggestions in The Ordinary line or similar.

Thanks a bunch in advance 🙂
Sammy

Sammy, your skin looks lovely for your age. If you want advice on The Ordinary’s products, you could contact Adore Beauty. This online store sells their products and their customer service is great:

I see that you have witch hazel in your routine. Are you using the very popular product called T.N.DICKINSON’S Witch Hazel Toner? If so, be aware that it includes 14% alcohol which can dry the skin out.

I also recommend rosehip oil. If you are worried that your skin will break out by using it, I have read of countless success stories where oily-skinned women use rosehip oil and it slowly balanced their skin out. Perhaps start cautiously by using it once or twice a week and see if your skin can tolerate it.

Sammy – Clearly, you have beautiful skin. Why are you thinking of doing an overhaul?

It seems to me that your skincare regime is working very well for you.

If you are concerned about T-zone breakout – this may be counter-intuitive but have you considered adding a hydrating serum under the moisturiser. Increasing water level decreases oil secretion level. The Ordinary makes a hyaluronic acid, I find it a bit sticky but it would fit into your budget. Every other hyaluronic serum I enjoy seem to be on the more expensive side.

Re aging on neck – if you are talking about lines and wrinkles (1) stop looking down at the phone too much (that applies to me 🙂 and (2) you can either bring all your skincare (including sunscreen) down to your neck or (3) use a mist and then an oil after cleaning. I find rosehip oil excellent for normal/combination skin. You don’t need an expensive one – Sukin / A’kin make decent rose hip oils.

Re aging near eye area – well I can’t see any (?) If you feel like adding an eye cream, Olay hydrating eye cream (blue) is excellent for its price. Suggest to get it from coles or priceline/chemist warehouse during 50% off 🙂

Sammy you have gorgeous skin. I can’t offer much advice but the main thing I changed was to double cleanse at night. I also used La Roche Posay Toleraine Ultra. This really minimised by break outs.

    Moisturise moisturise moisturise.
I’m a firm believer in the concept that if you don’t moisturise your skin works overtime to compensate.

Whilst genetics play a big part, smoking and unprotected sun exposure will age a persons skin prematurely.

Honestly, you look amazing for mid 30’s so I would not recommend any major changes.

One thing I strongly, STRONGLY discourage is believing anything that is for a specific part of your body or face i.e. a neck cream.
It is MARKETING and does not mean anything. You could use a foot cream on your face or a neck serum on your hands – it doesn’t matter because if it works for you it works for you.

Furthermore the neck, chest and hands are usually the first places we show “aging” that’s just a fact. your use of retinol is going to be your best bet against that, maybe you want to graduate to the 1% option.

If you are concerned about aging, and using retinol, SPF or sun protection needs to be in your routine. A UPF hat is reusable and easy to cary around vs SPF which may need to be reapplied which isn’t pleasant for some.

Finally, the market and brands will never want to admit this but probably 90% of how our skin reacts, ages etc is down to genetics.
That’s why there are people who can use the same bar of soap on their but and their face and still have flawless skin. That’s why some people can smoke like a chimney and tan in the sun and still look flawless just shy of 50.
Unfair but true. I would keep to your routine and not buy into (both figuratively and literally) the marketing propaganda brands try to feed you

Hopefully some more knowledgeable beauties will chime in to give you some advice, it has been quiet and slow (literally) on the forums lately.

I love the Essano facial cleanser and think the brand is good value for money, especially if you can get it on special somewhere. Maybe you could try the collagen boost serum.

I like everything the Ordinary make and don’t think you can go wrong with anything they have. Something with vitamin C would be beneficial. Personally I don’t use anti ageing cleansers as they are more expensive and as long as you reguarly exfoliate your skin you might want to save your money for other products. If you want to try a neck cream then the Clinique cream that was trialed a while back has both neck and face cream in one tub and is good – Clinique smart clinical multi-dimensional age transformer duo. Not everything you use needs to be specifically aimed at anti ageing, keeping skin hydrated is important too.

I find it hard to give recommendations as everyone is so different, and gawd knows I’m no expert! , I like to try new things and stick with something if it works. Your skin looks good to me by the way, staying fit and healthy is important for skin too and it looks like it is working for you.
