Sanitising lipstick

I know this might sound strange, but how do you go about sanitising a lipstick?

Only reason why I ask this is because all of my lipsticks (and the 2 lip tints I own) have got (apologies if this sounds gross) flaked skin from my lips on them & every time I put lippy on, I can’t seem to get a smooth finish despite exfoliating prior to application and I know this is due to the state of my lip products. I’ve seen someone in Mecca Maxima sanitise a NARS lipstick prior to giving it to me to apply, so I’m wondering what I can use that might hopefully restore my lippies to their previous glory. I’ve tried tissue-ing off the stuff, it doesn’t work.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I’ve wiped off the top layer of each of my lippies/lip products using a tissue, seems to have worked methinks. I wore one of my lip tints today & couldn’t feel any flakiness, so that’s a good sign.

I suggest you scrape the top layer off.
One thing to consider… They may have seen better days and time to throw them out?

Are you drinking enough water? Because dehydration will cause your lips to flake and crack, no matter how much lip balm you apply they will still flake. You should be having at least 2L a day.

I’ve seen the MUAs at Mac sanitise by just dunking the whole lipstick into alcohol and then rubbing and drying with a tissue. Not sure if it’ll restore your lipsticks but it certainly makes me feel better when they do that with the testers

I think you can swipe it with rubbing alcohol?
I’ve never tried it, however it is what people use to sanitise powders.

Otherwise I’d try a knife to thinly scrape the flaked skin off.
Paper Towel might also work, as there is a little more grip than a tissu.

The only thing I do to ‘clean’ a lipstick or lip balm etc is the tissue as you mentioned Seashells.

I just wipe off whichever area with a clean unscented tissue and I wipe all around gently until I feel it’s cleaned off. I don’t do it often with lipsticks, usually only with lip tints that I haven’t used for a while.

If you’ve already exfoliated your lips and applied a lip balm, then are your lips smooth prior to applying the lipstick? And does this happen to your lipstick even if you use a brand new clean untouched lipstick?

I’m guessing it is your chapped lips that may be leaving flaked skin on your lippies. Can you try finding a good soothing lip treatment/balm that stops your lips from flaking, then maybe you won’t have the lippies problem?

Or on your next trip to Mecca Maxima, you can ask them what they use?

I can only think of wiping off with tissue, I’d be interested if there’s a product out there for cleaning/sanitising lipsticks.

Forgot to mention this in my OP but I do put lip balm on prior to applying lipstick & let it sink in before lipstick application, so I don’t think it’s due to that. Only thing I can think of is my lips might be drying out due to the lipsticks (all from Bite Beauty) being of a matte formula…then again, even if I haven’t worn a matte lipstick in the past my lips have still dried out & flaked.
