Moisturisers peeling off!

I’ve had this problem with almost all moisturisers for a while now. Whenever I apply them, I wait about 10-15 mins for them to sink in, but when I rub my fingers over my face it results in the product peeling off! It’s so annoying as I can’t wear my makeup over it. Some people have said it’s due to silicones but it’s happened with all natural moisturisers too!

Could it be due to the fact I don’t exfoliate enough; and anything I put on my skin results in the dead skin cells peeling off? Because it looks like dead skin (like when you’ve sweated after exercise and not had a shower yet… sorry tmi gross!). I struggle with exfoliating enough as a lot of the exfoliators I’ve used (with beads), make my skin red and sensitive… even the natural ones with things like apricot kernels tend to cause the most harm…

Can anyone recommend a good exfoliator for sensitive skin? Cheers 🙂

I have to agree with above post, could it be you are applying too thick? But also, it might be your technique. i.e. if you rub your face 15-20mins after it has applied, chances are it might not have fully absorbed. By rubbing, you have caused the pilling. So I suggest if you will do this, to let it properly dry by seeing this effect by waiting an hour. But in general, it’s also not a good idea to touch your face too much cos you can get acne…

With the moisturisers and serums that I had absorption issues with, I was still rubbing off some product residue the next morning.

Scarlett_Angel, I never had problems with moisturisers and serums not absorbing into my skin until about a year ago. My first issue was with a Jurlique moisturiser that has a very rich formula. I could rub some of it off my face and the residue looked like a fine-textured putty. I emailed Jurlique and they said that I should apply a pea-sized amount of the moisturiser on damp skin. I tried this and it did help.

I had a similar problem with an A’kin night moisturiser which has a rich formula. After that, I had a similar issue with the Philosophy moisturisers that I trialled for BH (the ones that you won). Although I applied the Philosophy moisturisers on damp skin, I still had an issue with them not absorbing. I’ve also had a problem with a few natural-based serums that have a gel-like consistency. I tried applying them on damp skin and/or mixing the serums with argan oil and this helped, but not completely.

At first I wondered if my dry and mature skin was so dehydrated that it was repelling products, but really, I think that some products are not formulated well.

Sounds like you are applying moisturizer too thickly, a thin light layer is all you need, particularly as you aren’t exfoliating …

For a gentler approach to exfoliating you can try a chemical exfoliators rather than physical, eg a cream not beads … I love aspect’s purastat collection

Scarlet _Angel have you tried the Clarisonic brush? the brush does an amazing job, cleans the skin really well. You should also consider chemical exfoliation like AHA/BHA. 🙂

I haven’t got any issues with product peeling off, what moisturisers are you using anyways?

Physical exfoliants (one’s with any sort of grains or beads) make my skin hurt (apricot kernels are evil!) so I’ve shifted to acid toning as first step after cleansing (Pixi Glow Tonic is my favourite), it tingles a bit so use it sparingly until your skin gets used to it. Follow it up with a calming or hydrating toner. I feel if you put moisturiser on while your face is still pretty damp with toner or spritz, it sinks in better. Try spritzing after serum before putting moisturiser on. My usual routine: basic cleanse -> deep cleanse -> acid toner -> moisturising/hydrating/calming toner -> serum -> spritz (usually the same as the one used after acid toner, just don’t use cotton because it will wipe your precious serum off)-> moisturizer or oil.

Burts bees is a great brand that I find not too hard on the skin.

You could also try one of those actual exfoliating brushes out there.

Scarlett have you tried dermalogica cream exfoliant or dermalogica daily microfoliant. Both are really gentle. No granules.

I wouldnt go near TBS or Lush for exfoliants. Their stuff is not exactly gentle on skin.

    Hi Scarlett,
Does this happen regardless of if you use a serum prior?
My thoughts are perhaps you could try waiting a few extra minutes between serum and moisturiser.
Alternatively you may be applying too much product, perhaps try using a little bit less product.

You could try making your own natural products instead if your skin is sensitive.
I found these recipes and I have used them and they work well for me. If you make the moisturizer a little goes a long way.

    Exfoliator.
Grind up some oats in a food processor and then mix with enough honey until it makes a paste. Apply to your face in circular motions, leave on for 15 min and rinse off. Pat dry.

    Moisturizer
    3/4 cup shea butter
    4 tablespoons jojoba oil
    5 drops lavender essential oil
Place in a mixing bowl and whip for several minutes. Transfer mix to a jar.

Oh no, thanks but I`m right for moisturisers, I just won the Philosophy Creams trio! I`ve never had any reactions to them, only exfoliators, but I heard they`re banning the bad ones with plastic beads or something as it`s bad for the environment. It`s just the peeling off. It`s not like a skin reaction or anything. Sorry if what I wrote was confusing! :S

I don`t have a blender and my skin is combination, so not sure oats and honey would be best. I need something really effective but still gentle. Might check out Lush/The Body Shop.
