Itchy face After Drinking Wine

I recently found my face got itchy and red after drinking just a glass of wine. Has anyone got this problem?

I had a white wine last night and woke up this morning with a hives type rash, lumpy and itchy on my stomach, am wondering it its related to the wine. Did have a terrible bout of hives a few years ago which lasted on and off for months, never found out what caused it though. Thankfully it went away eventually, went to an allergist who charged a fortune and was useless, didn’t even do a skin prick test or anything.

After drinking the wine, my cheeks turn red, stuffy nose, sometimes I sneeze for about 5 minutes. The wine is red.

I am really allergic to sulphur, which is found in the preservatives. After a few sips my face goes red, the room will start spinning and I get a mad headache. It’s not great. The only thing which has helped so is to avoid drinking wine unfortunately. Though there is a usually a very small selection of sulphur free or minimal sulphur wines these days available at most good alcohol stores, though they’re expensive and not great.

I get the redness and rashes (depending on which wine/alcohol it is), but as I’ve been to an allergist he also said that sometimes it’s the combination of the items I had before the wine that causes the issue so it’s like an over abundance amount of sulphites.

Tons of sauces (soy etc have sulphates in them).

I usually stick to white wine as I find I am better with white than red and I have notes on my phone that I keep track of symptoms when I ingest which one. Trial and error unfortunately!

I tend to agree and prefer sparkling or white wines these days because of the additives in reds but there are a few good ones still out there. McGuigan reds seem to agree with me at least and same with Pepperjack but it is expensive.

Sulphites can occur naturally in some foods too.

I`ve had to head to hospital after having adverse reactions to wine and cider…

      Now I avoid them.

Sulphites cause itching, hives and asthma.

Avoid them if you are asthmatic or break out in hives!

    Look out for:

    220-228.

Commonly found in processed foods, fresh prawns, dried fruits and grapes!

This is a real problem for some people and I do feel for her. There are two types of preservatives used in red wines and I too suffer from ‘redness’ and sneezing if I consume wine with one of the preservatives – sorry but I don’t recall the preservative number – check the bottle and take note of the preservative and just avoid it. An antihistamine may help relieve the symptoms or just drink a lot of soda water to dilute the wine until feeling better. This is my remedy for relieving the issues I suffer, but mainly I just avoid red wine unless I am sure of the actual brand and had no ill effects previously.

Thank you so much for the remedy Am1851.I will try that remedy. I got scared of little red bumps on my face. I feel my skin not smooth. Feels like touching an orange. I thought it was the skincare products I use. I am new to drinking wine. Only drink special occasions like parties.

My daughter has an allergy to the preservative in wine. She starts to itch then it turns into little lumps all over her body and she needs to take an antihistamine to calm it down. If it happens frequently perhaps get an allergy test or discuss with your local health professional.
