Is facial toner actually a necessity to skincare routine?

I am skincare crazy and I take all the necessary steps to good skin (cleanse, exfoliate, serum/oil, moisturise etc) but one thing I’ve never actually used is toner! I want to know if skipping toner is okay to do or if I am totally missing out? I want to know all of your opinions! The benefits it has on your skin and why you love or don’t love it!

As someone with dry skin, I have always used a natural-based creamy cleanser to remove makeup. I have the impression that creamy cleansers leave a film on the skin to varying degrees. I use an alcohol-free aromatherapy toner to remove any possible film to help my serum, facial oil etc absorb more easily. Also, a toner removes any makeup and impurities that the cleanser didn’t remove. The evidence of the residue is on the cotton makeup remover pads.

I’ve recently been trying some cleansing oils. Although they don’t seem to leave a residue, I still use a toner afterwards to ensure that all impurities have been removed.

I don’t know if toner really does anything, but I like using one especially on days I wear makeup because it ensures my face is totally clean.

I’d used a face toner a couple of year’s a go & I really liked it, it was a Nivea one but was unfortunately discontinued-I liked that it got all the dirt & makeup off my face & had ingredients that were good for my skin but since then I try out a lot of different micellar water’s now so I’m not really sticking to one & they are great for a morning cleanse/night cleanse or removing makeup, I try to pick one’s that have good ingredients for skin & that are suited to combination skin as that is what I’ve but there can be plenty of product’s that suit your skin tone (labelled) & that are drying/alcohol in them as they aren’t all the same. I use cleanser only when removing makeup as that removes all of it besides my micellar water but with micellar water it show’s how much dirt is coming off your face then a cleanser so I use this product all the time.

No, at least not nowadays as we have better cleanser formulations.

That said, some people swear by Korean and Japanese toners as they aren’t as astringent.

I used to use a toner a long time ago but never found it beneficial for me so stopped using it.

I’ve used a toner for 30 years now and I have normal/dry skin (depends on the seasons). I use the Elizabeth Arden Ceramide one and it’s really lovely. I’d be lost if I didn’t have it.

I’ve always used toner, that is the one thing I used from a teenager.

Cleansing oil is far superior for makeup and sunscreen removal in my opinion.

I think Korean toners serve a different purpose to the traditional astringent toners though so you could give them a whirl!

I agree toner takes off every last bit of make up. A good alcohol free one is the Natio Ageless which I’ve used for a few years. I haven’t tried Micellar water but read somewhere it acts like a cleanser and toner in one.

I use a non alcohol, spray on toner. It helps my serum to spread and work properly. If I dont use a toner I would at least spray water on before applying serum. A lot of the serums (those containing humectant ) work better on moist/wet skin
