What’s your favourite thing about being single?

Hey beauties,

Valentine’s Day can be tough if you’re feeling lonely, so I want to write an article about some of the benefits of being single.

If you’re single or have enjoyed a period of being single, I’d love for you to contribute what your favourite parts about being single were, what you learned, or maybe something you achieved – this is super broad but really, I’m just looking for happy stories about being single.

warmest,

Jess xx

Being able to wholly work on yourself and your goals without another person holding you back. Being able to spend time alone when you need it and not have to explain it to someone. Being able to travel, or move countries or cities without needing to uproot someone else’s life.

And most importantly, for me, having the time and space to learn to be happy within myself without needing outside validation. This has been a huge struggle a lifelong people-pleaser, and I’m making progress because I have the time and space.

You can travel at anytime without telling the significant other. You can do anything you would like to do.

We’re all saying FREEDOM as our #1 reason! I like to eat, drink, do & watch whatever I want, to go wherever I want & come home when I want.

I like that the dunny is always clean & the seat is always down.
    If there’s a mess, it’s my mess.
All my things are where I left them.

My favourite thing about being single is the independence and definitely not having to answer to anyone. I love being able to do my own thing when and how I want to.

Simply… I love being able to do what I want when I want and not having to answer to anyone… I can just be and do what I want… FREEDOM!!!

I miss being able to spend as much time as I want browsing in the beauty section without someone making a scene and asking if it´s time to go already…

I’m not single and haven’t been for over 14 years. But even when I was single I didn’t have “freedom “ as I grew up in a strict household. But at least then I could watch a horror film or sci fi without a derogatory comment (and that is just one of many things). I usually wait till he goes to bed to watch what I want. Being in a partnership is a lot of sacrifice never mind having children. (Don’t get me wrong there are positives too, about being in a steady relationship). So the best thing about being single,I imagine, would be not having to sacrifice the things you love to do.

I haven’t been single for very long except for my early teens and a few months inbetween being 19-20 years old, I have been in a long term relationship for just shy of 9 years now lol. When I was single it was awesome, I could go out whenever I wanted, go clubbing and drinking with friends and have a great time, the freedom to do whatever you want whenever you want.

While it is nice having a partner, it is more important that the partner is the one who is being a positive influence in your life. Having both been married for many years that produced two children, I have also been in long term relationships which were nice and comforting to have a partner to share experiences, but when there is no future, it is better to move on. I am now single, can do as I please without having to consult with another, but the downside is I have no one to actually share an experience with or go out for an intimate dinner with. I have friends to dine with or go places, but it isn’t the same as going with a ‘partner’ where you both want the same experience.

Never mind, I would rather be single and free than in a relationship that has hurdles and problems.

I’ve been single for practically my entire life, except for that 1 month back when I was in Year 9 & dating a guy from another school, whose friends were dating my friends. I look back now & wonder why the heck I did it, but hey, it was a learning experience!

Singledom can have its ups & downs. Not gonna lie, there have been times where I’ve felt lonely & have longed for a partner; but for the most part, I don’t worry/care about being single. Other people (mostly middle-aged women who don’t really know me, IME) seem to care a lot though….

For me, freedom is the best thing about being single:

The freedom to do what I want, when I want.

The freedom to have guy friends without having a partner question it or worse, telling me to stop talking to them. (A lot of my friends are dudes, all of whom live overseas, but still…)

    The freedom to be independent.

    The freedom to travel.

The freedom to just be me, warts & all.

Freedom from any emotional or psychological pain a man might put me through. (I give myself enough grief as is; why have a partner, potential or otherwise, add to it?)

Freedom to leave the toilet seat permanently down lol.

    Freedom to invest in myself.

    That sums it up!

You have a healthy attitude to being single Seashells. It is better to be on your own than to put up with stuff and surroundings that make you unhappy just to `not be single`. Freedom is the answer.

        Couldn`t agree more!

I think I`ve had this attitude instilled in me through conversations with my Mum over the years. Although she`s happily married to my father, she`s been quite open with me about the fact that they`ve had their ups & their downs & that relationships aren`t the Disney fairytales we are sold as children. (Although that being said I read way too much of them as a child lol.) She`s also seen women who have got into and stayed in crappy relationships purely because they “”need a man”” & can`t bear the thought of being on their own. I, on the other hand, am the opposite: I`m quite content being on my own & don`t believe that I need a man in order to be fulfilled.
