Gel nail kits

I’m thinking I would like to try gel nails. There are so many starter kits out there, and I’ve got no idea what to look for. All the known brands seem to have them. I’ve seen a Sally Hansen starter kit in the latest Priceline catalogue, and also the SENSATIONAIL and FUSE Gelnamel kits as shown in a BH article just a few days ago.
What have you used?
What should I be looking for?
Are they worthwhile?

Marie D. Reed‘s previous post is spam which I’ve reported on the “Serial SPAM member on BH” thread. BH members: please do not click on the blue link.

Bumping up an old topic rather than starting a new one…….

Lucky me got a SensatioNail kit for Mother’s Day! I used it for the first time yesterday, and I’m really happy with the result. A few questions for the experts though….

I’m assuming I can use other brand gel polish with my SensatioNail kit? I have read that they are interchangeable. Yes?

REMOVAL – I do know that you use acetone to remove gel nails, and I’m aware of the process. Do I need to use a specific gel nail polish remover (eg Sally Hansen gel polish remover, or can I just use acetone you get from Bunnings? It’s heaps cheaper, but is it the same thing?

As for cancer dangers, well driving along the highway is dangerous. So is swimming in the ocean. Used sensibly I can’t see it being a problem.

The acetone you get at Bunnings is 100% whilst the Sally Hansen is literally just nail polish remover and is only about 89%. I’ve used Cutex nail polish remover to remove my gel polishes, works really well! You just need something with higher than 80% acetone.

I just did a quick google, and you can use UV and LED lamps with interchangeable polishes.

    Thanks Imi.
Priceline have for 3 for 2 on Sally Hansen, and I was going to check out their colour range.

I’ve just seen the 7 news and it is saying that applying gel nails with the lamp can cause cancer. Problems can start happening with as little as 7 applications. Apparently more study has to be done before they will consider banning gel manicures.
I actually saw BH Liv talk about gel nails. Woohoo our Liv is a TV star.
You were looking good girl, looking good. You spoke professionally and confidently, very proud of you.
Is there any other BH members who saw Liv on the box?

Scary. And I’ve been debating about whether to try gel nails or is it just the lamp that could cause cancer? Still it’s scary especially for the ladies that are using gel. 🙁 I’d be terrified.

And Liv was on TV! Don’t watch much TV at all but I’m sure she did look lovely 🙂

I’m torn about getting one of these kits. Part of me loves the thought of 2 weeks chip free but then the other part of me loves changing the colour of my nails once or twice a week…

I change my nail polish every 2 days, because I’m so rough on my nails they always chip! The only time it’s a problem is when we go away, which we do every few months. I hate having to change my polish when we’re away and taking all the stuff with me is a huge pain, but if I don’t paint my nails I bite them! The gel will be perfect to apply before we travel 🙂

I have my volunteer shift at the animal welfare league tomorrow, usually by the time I’ve had rubber gloves on for 4 hours getting all hot and sweaty my nail polish just peels off, I’m hoping this mani will stay the distance!

Well I managed to get the Sally Hansen Gel Polish kit from Priceline during their 40% off sale, I had a $48 beauty club voucher (eep, don’t judge, I stocked up on Bioderma and La Roche Posay during their skincare sale!) so it cost me $12! I got the “Red My Lips” colour and tried it out last night, I love it! It was really easy and set so fast – at first I couldn’t work out why it was staying so sticky, then I realised I hadn’t wiped it over with the alcohol swab at the end! I had been kitten-wrangling and my nails were all covered in cat fur and looked awful, but they came back to perfect as soon as I used the swab! The only other thing I did wrong was not take the polish right over the tip of my nail, so I got a bit of shrinkage, just the tiniest bit – here’s a pic, you can see a little white edge on my ring finger especially:

I’m currently trying out the Fuse kit and really like it and it’s RRP is only $50.. I don’t know the technicalities of the equipment but I can honestly say it’s as though I’ve had them done in the salon – I can’t tell any difference so the quality is there! It was really easy to use and has a compact little lamp… I’ll be reviewing it in full in a few weeks once I see how the nails but I think I’m completely converted! Especially when the polishes are about $15 each which is super affordable!

    Look forward to your review!

That’s another question I was going to ask. What’s the difference between this one for $50, and others that are $100?

From my understanding the Fuse line is more of a hybrid between a gel mani and a regular polish. You only have to clean the nail, apply the polish and then cure the polish whereas with other kits you’ve got base and top coats and a bigger lamp. The idea with Fuse is you still get the look and longer wear of gel nails but it’s not as harsh on the nails… I assume it won’t last as well as a regular gel kit would too 🙂

Great reply Sarzej, thank you for the explanation! The Fuse one sounds better for me 🙂
