Lightening hair

Hi all,

I’m a bridesmaid in my sisters wedding in a few weeks time and am looking for advice on how to lighten my hair without going to the hairdresser as $ is very tight at the moment due to a recent move.

My natural hair is dark blond (attached photo) that has a tendency to turn yellow when I lighten it.

I haven’t coloured it in years as I’ve been trying to embrace my natural colour but the bridesmaids dress washes me out and I think lighter hair would help the situation.

Any expert advice on home colouring or does anyone know anyone know a hairdresser in Brisbane that is cheap.

Thanks in advance 🙂

Lightening hair or bleaching damages the hair soooooo much. If it is only for one occasion, it is probably not worthwhile doing it. Your hair looks beautiful.

Agree with the others, your hair colour looks so good as is! Maybe you could just do some subtle lightening around the face? I recently used the Schwarzkopf Nordic Blonde Feather Balayage kit, it was really good – the brush that comes with it is pretty terrible but you can pick a better one up cheap from an arts and craft store.

I too would do half head of foils which shouldn’t cost to much but like duality said I actually like the colour! Maybe the makeup on the day will not make you feel as washed out?

It is possible to do it yourself at home but you need to do your homework, and as mentioned above, follow instructions to the letter. If you don’t buy a kit then I don’t think you need to use anything higher than 20 vol on your hair, it’s already light enough naturally to need anything too strong and and getting someone to help with the tricky bits and the back of your head would be a good idea. If you’re not confident to do it yourself then try and find someone to do it for you. It can be easy to damage your hair with bleach so be careful, their is alot of info on how to do it online or you can buy a kit.

There is a really good d.i.y lightening kit I used to use a while back when I was bleaching & lightening my hair from black to blonde (my poor hair lol), Loreal has a very good bleach kit and a awesome lightening kit, they used to be about $15-$20 I am unsure if it is still available though (has been a few years since I have gone blonde, but this one used to my HG, it works wonders no harsh tones or anything–make sure you follow the instructions to the letter though!) Definitely give the lightening one a try if you come across it.

Sorry I won’t be of much help, I think your natural colour is gorgeous and if it was mine I wouldn’t touch it! It also looks very healthy which will change when you go blonde, also blonde is heaps of upkeep which means lots of $$$

There are TAFE salons which do cheap services and are totally supervised training hairdressers. If you must add some colour maybe go a half head of foils. Lots of salons have afterpay now too.
