Help! My kids have nits

I have been waging a miniscule war against head lice on the heads of my 2 daughters (4 & 7). I have tried various treatments and haven’t found any that really do a good job. Meaning, when I do the conditioner and nit comb thing after having treated with the nit treatment (which is supposed to kill them – the nits not my daughters) I am still pulling out live ones. I suspect that it’s not killing the eggs either because we keep getting infestations about 2 weeks after I treat them. And yes I wash all bed clothes etc. when I do the hair. Anyone out there have some recommendations???

When I was caring for 2 school age children who had this problem I found Banlice mousse to be effective it has pyrethrins in it (which is from natural plant sources and used in natural bug spray, flea and tick treatments many items use it) It did take a few attempts with a week or so break before using it again to be certain they had all been killed. Yep there was a lot of hair combing, washing all clothes, bedding, toys etc but it did work. Just read about another one in a mag called Neutralice, no first hand experience with that one but heres a link if your keen to check it put http://www.neutralice.com.au they claim to be 98% effective in killing the headlice. Good luck Kazzam65, not a fun job but you’ll get there!

To get rid of the suckers mum buys a big onelitre el’ cheapo conditioner (make sure it spreads well) and a good quality comb. Spread a generous amount of conditioner through the hair, leave for a few minutes and sit and comb and comb and comb…… They conditioner stopes them from getting a grip.. Do this once a day for three weeks (long I know) so you catch the ones that slip through each day, and hatch more..

How frustrating, Mel. I must admit to finding it amusing that you went in and washed his hair at daycare, good on you, darl!!

Oooh, my head is feeling itchy just reading this thread! My mum used to spray our heads and the inside of our hats with a product called Orange Medic, I think you can still get it. It had quite a pleasant smell. All the best in the war with the nits Kazzam 🙁

I couldn’t agree more scent, I had to go to daycare to wash Jarvyns hair a few months ago, was not impressed, they said to me he has nits and can’t stay at school if he has nits. I politely told them that I would come in and wash it because he is not comming home because of that, and that the only place he has been where he could have gotten nits is there at the daycare, during the days prior we had not been out anywhere nor had they played with any other kids, so daycare is the only place he could have gotten them, I also said you should probably check the other kids hair as well to find where they are comming from, LOL. I find he gets them quite a bit it drives me nuts, Jarvyn is ok but I also have to do Nylese’s hair when he gets them and she just will not sit still and let me try and comb them out, it is a nightmare for us all, and I hate it when they get them, lol. Bring that device on I say ness, the sooner the better 😉
blondie I too use conditioner, it works well as a preventative measure as well, if I put it on before they go to daycare often it seems to help keep them away, I love using the Palmolive Healthy Ends leave in conditoner on them atm, but any one will work 🙂

Conditioner is another good product to use,it doesn’t kill the nits but it stuns them enough to get them with a nit comb(just smother the hair in it).I used to buy a huge bottle of conditioner to use for nits.Just have a plastic bag handy with paper towels to wipe them off after each comb through. Also ages ago a friend also suggested to me to put a few drops of tea tree oil in spray bottle of water to apply each day to deter nits.
The good thing about conditioner,it’s got no harsh chemicals like heaps of the nit treatments out there Plus the nits can become immune to certain nit treatments,so try to use a different one every now and then(different ingredients)

Thanks for the info, ladies. I battle with lice when school starts. It’s so frustrating to treat your child’s hair, just for them to get it again at school!!
