Greasy and Oily hair

Hi, beauties,

My hair very quickly gets greasy, oily and sticky. Any valuable opinions?

I am a dry shampoo addict unfortunately. I have blonde hair and by day two it already starts looking oily and lank, so I get 3 days by using dry shampoo on the second and third day. Works well for me.

I tried dry shampoo on desperate days but I am washing my hair everyday now. Other methods didn’t seem to work well for me.

Great tips ladies, thanks! I suffer from oily hair as well. It’s such a pain washing so often. I usually wash every second day, but lately I’m trying to push it out to 3 days, especially if it’s the weekend and I don’t need to leave the house.

Brushing it too much can make the scalp produce more oil too.

Yes, definately dry shampoo is a lifesaver. I personally havent experienced more hair fallout from using dry shampoo. I use Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo. Agree with other comments to train your hair to only need washing max twice a week. In winter I was once a week, but summer I’ll wash every 4 or 5 days. Dry shampoo on the last day gets me through to a 5th day in summer. One tip that works for me is before shampooing, if my hair is really greasy I will do an apple cider vinegar rinse on my scalp (1:5 ACV/water). I massage a bit of it in, let it sit for 5-10 mins and then rinse the rest through, but focusing on the scalp. It helps to remove excess grease and keeps my hair from getting as greasy in between washes. Goodluck! The temps are starting to rise now, so it’s a good thread!

I`ll have to try the ACV & work on training my hair over the holidays. I currently wash my hair everyday if I am planning on leaving the house so I can`t imagine being able to go 4-5 days but its worth a try.

Thanks, Eskimo82. I will try the apple cider vinegar rinse on my scalp. It`s a good tip.

After a few days, my hair is an oil slick. I last longer between shampoos when I use TRESemmé Deep Cleansing Shampoo. I don’t like the matching conditioner, so I use a different conditioner, but I only apply it to the ends of my hair.

I can eke out an extra day before shampooing if I use dry shampoo. I favour Klorane Dry Shampoo WITH NETTLE – for oily hair.

    Good luck, Iranga!

Thanks for the tip…I will have to give the TRESemmé Deep Cleansing Shampoo a try.

I`ve been using it for decades & my hair never seems to get used to it, I`m constantly rabbiting on about it on the forum.

        Love your colourful avatar, Helen!

I have heard a lot about people ‘retraining’ their hair. It’s supposed to be good for oily hair. Perhaps look into that?

Great idea, I did try it some years ago, but sadly didn`t work for me.

    • 5 yrs, 4 mths ago

Yes, Aimjj. but it looks like I`m sick

    • 5 yrs, 4 mths ago

AimJJ, I totally agree with this and it worked for me. I used to need to wash it every day and now I only wash it every 3 or so days and it`s totally fine. I don`t even use dry shampoo in between.

Basically what you do is just push through the grease for a few weeks. Ie, wash your hair only once a week for a month for example, then twice a week, and your hair will gradually stop producing so much oil. It isn`t very pleasant at first but it definitely worked for me. There`s obviously different variations on that so maybe do some Googling 🙂

        Hey Lizabella,

Can I ask is your fine at all and what did you do when you spaced it out for so long style wise?

I have the same issue so I wash every 2nd day cos I don`t want to do it every day but I wear my hair up and mess it up with hairspray & use dry shampoo so it doesn`t stick flat to my head. I wish I could go wash every 3rd day but don`t want to have filthy looking hair if it makes sense?

        Hi ThisIsMe 🙂
I have super fine, super thin hair (think toddler wispy hair!). I can`t do much in terms of styling my hair so I have to wear it up on days I don`t wash it, and it unfortunately does sit pretty flat to my head, but I sometimes wear those plain black scunci headbands with the teeth to make it look intentional haha. I am lucky that I work from home so don`t need to worry much about it though. If you can push through 2 weeks or so of washing once a week, you`ll find that you`ll easily get away with doing a day 3 wash afterwards!

Thanks! Ohhh I`m gonna do that in the Christmas Holidays that way no-one will see me much! HAHAHAHA

      • 5 yrs, 4 mths ago

        Haha good plan! Good luck!!!

      • 5 yrs, 4 mths ago

Thanks, Lizabella. I will try it see how it `s work for me

My hair has been like this for a few years now, if I don’t shampoo it every day, it starts to go greasy/oily and drives me nuts, so I shampoo everyday, sometimes dry shampoo does help, Otherwise, I wear it up in a twist and clip. Oh, I have tried a hair masque and that actually gets me a few more days before needing to shampoo/condition.

I hear ya! I suffer the same. I use dry shampoo on day 2, and it seems to keep me going a little longer. Bastisse gives me the best results
