Candles, diffusers, oils: give us your low-down on scent and throw

Home fragrance, aromatherapy and all things scented have really hit it big. Don’t we know it.

They smell good. They look pretty, and most beauties adore a lit candle.

So, aside from a review, give us the low-down on your experiences with specific products, whether it be an oil burner / diffuser, a candle, or perhaps the lovely bamboo stick fragrance diffusers.

Considerations include:

  • Scent throw (rate from 0 to 10 with 0 being short-lived scent throw and 10 being long-lasting and wide-ranging)
  • Ingredients (natural vs. a mix of natural and synthetics and preservatives)
  • How long it lasts (burn time, deterioration of wick, smoking of wick, trimming requirements of wick, fragmentation of bamboo sticks… )
  • Sizes, varieties, associated products (i.e. does it come with other products in the same scent) so you can do the matching goodies in your home.

Lots of things to include!

I was inspired by the conversation in the following thread:

Seashells, thanks for your comment. I’ve just finishing burning a Glasshouse candle with their previous wax formula and it didn’t burn cleanly i.e. some black smoke. I have a few more candles with their old wax to burn, so I will be interested to see how they burn. I’ve also started looking at candles from other brands apart from Glasshouse and Circa (they’re the same company).

Warning to people that buy candles from Glasshouse Fragrances

Although many people rave about Glasshouse’s candles having a strong scent throw, this has not been my experience, apart from one or two candles that had a soft to medium scent throw (many had none). I’ve tried to find reviews to support my experience, but I haven’t found many …. until now. Since the company switched to using soy wax, I came across a worrying amount of negative feedback about their candles here:

I would be interested to know if anyone here has tried candles with their new wax formula, and if so, what you think of them.

i am obsessed with a brand called Scentsy it has so many different products from oils to room spray, melts, laundry products to keep you clothes smelling amazing to hand creams they literally sell everything. I have two of the electronic melt burners in my house as well as two oil burners my house smells amazing. The room sprays are so good, your linen and carpet or any material will absorb the spray leaving your room smelling amazing for a very long time. I’m obsessed with this brand and would highly recommend it

I see that Glasshouse have released an ‘Explorer collection’ with four different scents in mini size so you can try them out. I like this idea but wonder if you would even get a decent throw on such a small thing…. they’re only 30g each! That and it’s a bit exxy at $30.

Still, if they work well, it’s a good way to try them out rather than waste money on the big size and decide it’s not for you…

  • I am asking for some wisdom on how to “refresh” a reed diffuser.

I’ve got a one from In Essence. It has been about 5-6 weeks and while there is more than half of the content left, the smell is gradually dying. i have turned the reeds twice a week and it is not helping very much.

I found that the liquid remaining to be thicker than when it was started. I am wondering if there is anything I can add into the remaining product to refresh the difusser. It is a limited edition scent, by the way, so buying another one is no longer an option.

It is used in air-conditioned room all the time.

    Thanks in advance!

I’ve got a candle mould from Spotlight, but you could make your own. The only thing is to be careful with whatever you use to heat the wax. If you use the stove top, don’t use a saucepan (I ruined a saucepan this way once), use an old saucepan or use a large tin. Big peach tins are good to use but they’re difficult to pour from, so take care. If you use the microwave, use a microwave safe container that you’re never going to use for food or any other purpose. Give it a go philippa!
