Should I go for tooth correction? (Braces)

Hi everyone!

I am 28 years old this year and I know age is catching up with me. Since young, I have crooked teeth and I remembered back then I was offered a free braces procedure done by one of the local government dental clinics as it was recommended by my primary school dentist, but how foolish was I to give this chance away as I wasn’t really bothered by how my teeth grows at that point of time.

As of now.. As my teeth have fully grown and matured, I am really not sure if I would want to put on braces. may it be traditional or even the higher end kind of braces. I have seen my friends did it, and it will take almost 2 to 3 years for it to be fully free from braces or retainers. And also, I need to consider the cost too. It easily cost from 2.3k onwards for market rate.

Any people out there with this kind of braces experience please advice?
I do want to have good looking smiles, however, I am contemplating whether to pay the price (financially and physical pain) to get the smiles I want.

I had braces when I was in year 7! Officially the youngest in my grade haha! I had them on for one year. I had some pain each month as they were tightened and had to eat softer foods for a day or two each month.
I remember choosing different coloured rubber bands haha ! Even tho I was the only one around with them.. I never was given a hard time about it.
I am so so glad I had braces! I see photos of my crazy teeth and am so grateful that I was able to get them!
They really are an investment in yourself. I feel so nice with nice looking teeth now. And people comment on my teeth even today.
Just do it! I think if you are thinking seriously about it then it must bother you a little. you should take the plunge and do it! Dentists also offer payment plans for things like braces too!

I have checked with several different dentists and all of them told me it is purely for cosmetic reason. There are no risk of having more teeth problem just because they are not aligned perfectly so long as you look after them.
I hate the idea of having teeth remove and pain, so i have chose to let my teeth be crooked.

Just 3 years back, I had my wisdom tooth removed. And the dentists helped me to take out an extra tooth for me that`s protruding my front tooth. ever since there`s no issue for me while brushing my teeth. And like what you`ve said, no potential health problems even when teeth are not aligned etc. But at this point in time, as I grew older, I start to care more about how I looked and stuff. Not to the extreme where I want to go for a makeover or what. but just that if I can “”fine tune”” some of my facial features, such as my teeth, that would be awesome. But there`s still a price to pay to look good after all yea.

I’ve had a similar dilemma… I ended up deciding to leave my teeth as they are as there is no medical reason for changing them… Purely cosmetic… So, I’ve accepted them as they are and I’d rather spend the money on something else… Also, I can’t see my teeth as a general rule, so they don’t bother me…

Hmmm.. Whatever you said does make sense to me too. It kinda made me got into deep thoughts about why do I want to do this in the 1st place. But well.. If finance is not an issue, high chances I will still go for it purely for cosmetic purposes. I mean, who doesn`t love a beautiful smile man.. But thanks for sharing your experience!

Ansolutley, DO IT! You will not regret it.
I started invisalign treatment a couple of months before my 29th birthday. I do not ever regret doing it, I just wish I had done it sooner. I now have a perfect smile (even though I’m still rearing my retainers daily – or fangs as my husband calls them). It’s not cheap, and I was just shy of finishing my treatment when I got married, but I had perfectly straight teeth for my 30th birthday. I would highly recommend invisalign to anyone considering orthodiontic treatment.

Thanks for the recommendation Rhian! I am happy for you that you`ve made that decision to go for it when you are my age!

I know right? I wish that I would have gone for the free treatment way back then when I was given that opportunity.

Have you considered veneers? I got composite veneers and fours years down the track I’m really happy with them. Depends on the price your dentist offers but mine cost a few hundred per tooth, which ends up being cheaper than braces in the long run. Of course it also depends on the degree of how crooked your teeth are to whether they can do them, so there are variables I guess, but your dentist should definitely outline the pros and cons. Porcelain is of a higher quality, but that can cost anywhere from a few thousand per tooth. I would say go to your dentist and have a good chat about your opitions! 🙂

Just went to google that :`D
It is something new to me. hahahaa.
but it seems like these are so-called “”fake tooth”” that sticks to your real tooth permanently yea?

I had braces during my teens for 2 years & I’d definitely recommend getting them if you’re unhappy with the look of your teeth. I had the traditional metal ones, but I had clear brackets up top & colourful ones on the bottom so they didn’t stand out so much. I’m not sure if Invisalign was around in the early 00’s when I had mine, but even if they were, it wasn’t an option for me as my teeth were badly crooked.

I was a bit naughty & did away with my retainers after a while because my orthodontist didn’t tell me how to clean them & quite frankly, they began to taste disgusting (I had a mouth guard/Invisalign type one for my top teeth, which gave me a lisp); but I kind of regret it now as my bottom teeth have begun to get out of alignment. I also twisted one of my teeth when I had braces & it too is back out of alignment (although I never quite got it fully straight when I had braces on). I wouldn’t be surprised if I had to have braces again, but I hope I won’t have to.

As sunjeanie mentioned, most (if not all) orthodontists will offer you a payment plan, so you can pay off your treatment in installments. That was the path I went down with my braces. I know that having them is not a cheap exercise (mine cost close to 5K by the time I was finished), but when it all boils down, having a nice smile is worth it.

Wow.. u mean in 2 years time, the total cost was close to 5k by the time you are done with the braces? or this includes the maintenance fees over the years?

Thanks for sharing your story! Actually, as of now, I am not that desperate enough to want to go for braces as I am still able to accept myself as a whole for how I look.
Just that if I have the capability to go for braces, I would`t mind but what could be holding me back is just the duration of this whole process that I just got to go through man.

I’m 22 and I’ve had braces for nearly a year. I was worried how they would look before I got them.

I have clear train track braces on my bottom teeth and invisalign on the top. It’s honestly not even that noticeable that I even have them. Obviously it would depend on your teeth, if you are able to get Invisalign.

Personally, I haven’t had any pain when my braces have been tightened. I would definitely recommend getting braces if you aren’t happy with how your teeth look.

      Hi Isabel,

Thanks for the advice, Yes my local dentist here do have Invisalign, however, the price difference between the metal braces and this is quite a huge. Well. I guess that`s the price to pay in order to look natural even though you are in the midst of getting your teeth straight.
      Thanks!

Honestly a nice smile is priceless and will do wonders for your confidence. I really needed braces as a teen, as my teeth were more than just crooked, my bottom teeth would go inbetween some of my top teeth when I bit down.

It is painful but so worth it cosmetically. I would recommend conventional metal braces only because they dont smell like invisalign. I.e. depending on what you eat like garlic, onion etc, it can be hard to keep them smelling fresh. I know this because once my metal braces did come off, my retainer is made of the same stuff and it was awful, so I can’t imagine doing years of invisalign.

Some cons are that you might have to have teeth out, and braces are more painful as you get older. I have one tooth that is in trauma after having braces. It’s very sensitive and my dentist checks up on it every 6 months as I’m reluctant to have root canal therapy on it. I’m annoyed at that because I had 7 healthy teeth removed in total and now one is causing me trouble. But in all I don’t regret it as I think having a nice smile is worth it.

Most orthodontists have payment plans too, so you can pay in instalments at every adjustment.

Thanks for sharing your experience Sunjeanie!

Talking about Invisalign, I didn`t know that they will have their downsides too. At first, I was considering Invisalign because there are no metal wires clinging to my teeth the whole day and night for a good period of a year or two and it would definitely hasten up my eating process.

And I didn`t know that there will be a risk of having tooth trauma after the braces!
I thought it will be quite a straightforward process as long as I follow the doctor`s instructions closely on the dos and nos.

And yes, you are right. At the end of the day, a nice smile is priceless. 🙂
      Thanks!
