Product recommendations for oral injuries?

Can anyone recommend something to aid oral wound healing? My three year old spent the night at emergency dental last night following an injury to his mouth. His gums are really inflamed and still bleeding this morning. I’ve tried to get him to do a warm salt water rinse this morning but that was a really tough sell.

I’m hoping that there’s maybe a rinse or something out there that might help – preferably something where only a small amount would do some good versus a whole glass full of warm salt water that a three year old has no interest in rinsing with more than two tiny sips worth.

Any suggestions are most welcome!

Such bad luck for a 3 year-old. Hope he feels better soon. Will ice-cream make him feel better?

Thank you, jillian206. Bad luck indeed! He`s eaten a fair bit of ice cream over the last few days as anything solid is too hard for him to chew. Yesterday he wanted a Grainwave, but tried to chew it and it was too difficult so he just swallowed it whole. Thank goodness it was just a small one, but that`s not good. His front teeth are pushed back so his bite has been changed and I don`t know if it`s the gum inflammation that`s the problem or the teeth position that`s making it hard for him to chew. As much as I don`t want to have him put under to have his front teeth removed, I`m afraid we may need to so he can eat properly. We go back to the dentist next week so hopefully he`ll have some other options for us. Fingers crossed!

    Sorry to hear about this…

Warm salty waters is a great healer… Or Colgate has one out for surgical procedure at the chemist. If you ask the pharmacist they may be able to steer you in the right direction…

Thank you, sootyblack_14. The warm salt water remains the top pick. I just wish my 3 year old was more compliant. I did ask the pharmacist if he had anything he could recommend. He had a Listerine product in mind and I thought – Listerine?! No way! But apparently they have an alcohol free version, however it`s not recommended for children under 6.

My son is doing the occasion mouthful of warm salt water rinse and he`s letting my husband clean his teeth, which is good. His gums still look pretty awful, but on the mend.

Oh, poor little thing. That’s some great advice from Duality and This is me. Glad to hear he’s eating a bit more now. Hope he’s feeling better soon

Thank you, freaky. We have to go back for a follow up next week with the dentist, but I have a bad feeling he`s going to refer us to a specialist for surgery. 🙁

I worked in surgical dental for years. The mouth heals best when left alone. To minimise his symptoms give some simple analgesics like Nurofen if he’s tolerant to it over panadol as Nurofen is a good anti inflammatory. Salt water is good but his age the tolerance and compliance will be low.

Thank you, duality. That`s actually very reassuring to know. My little guy has come a long way since this morning because he`s actually eating now – just soft things obviously like yogurt, jelly and custard whereas this morning he just whimpered at the suggestion of food. Hopefully if I offer the warm salt water rinse again later today or tomorrow, he might be more agreeable. And if not, I won`t stress about it.

Thanks again for putting my mind at ease!

    Hi Lucrecia629,

Warm water & salt I would say are best as a lot of the other stuff has strong things for numbing etc sometimes and he may have a reaction to it. Good Luck!

Agreed. I was given this advise from my Dentists 3 weeks ago after having my Wisdom Teeth removed.
