Celebrity haters who miss out

Often I read comments on articles and forums on this site that “hate” (I use this term loosely, as part of a vernacular)on particular people or “celebs”. I’ve read comments from people stating that they think a particular person is “vile” and they would never purchase anything they produce or endorse because they would never want to support their greedy money grubbing ways etc. I understand that everyone has the right to their own opinions, and I completely respect everyone’s opinions also, however the comments themselves sometimes are just negative to the personality or celebrity and aren’t an indication of the product. I do have to say this is a beauty website which I love to visit and I do think it’s a great community of users, who I rarely (if ever) have seen a negative remark towards other users. I love to read articles about new products and application tips and I myself love to post my thoughts and reviews.
Sometimes there are products that are celebrity endorsed- or their own brand and sometimes the application tips are from a particular celebrity’s look. I have received awesome tips on articles that contain some pretty negative and off the point comments and it makes me think that some people are missing out on trying some great things because their “hate” is blinding them from the actual purpose of this website, which is to inform us about beauty and health trends and products. The same is relevant to beauty products, at the minute I have a whole trove of Kylie Cosmetics products that I absolutely love, but I’ve read that lots of people won’t try them because she is part of the Kardashian/Jenner clan. To me that seems like some people are missing out on trying some really great products due to their dislike for her and her family. This is not a post about me thinking everyone needs to go out and try the Kylie Cosmetics line, I’m using her as an example because I’ve been using a lot of her stuff lately and I know how reluctant people have been to try the products- I also know people won’t try Paris Hilton products or Jeffree Star collabs because they don’t like things they have done as people.
Anyway these are just my thoughts and opinions. Just on a note about the negative comments, this is a site that relies on the input of its users, I think it might be nice if when a negative comment has nothing to do with the quality or experience with a beauty or health product that we all try and follow that old saying of, “if you haven’t got anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.” And maybe we can look past who made the product or who endorsed it and try it out ourselves and form opinions based on the products and not the person. 🙂

I’m not sway by celebrity products. They use the same suppliers as the cheaper brands.

I don’t not buy a good product based on the celebrity brand or endorsement. It goes both ways for me, tho. Just because I like a celeb doesn’t mean I will rush out and buy the product.

As I said at the top of this forum I have no issue with celeb fragrances, I have owned ones by Britney, Beyonce, Rhianna, JLO simply because I like the scent of these fragrances.

However I do believe their is some questions surrounding the quality of the Kardashian/Jenner products. I love handbags and I regularly purchase new handbags. When I was in the store the shop assistant said don’t even bother with the Kardashian bags and purses because the quality is poor (and the price tag is high), she told me that a lot of young girls purchase their bags/purses and they have broken a short time later. She also told me that the warranties with the Kardashian bags can be quiet “shonky” so people have trouble getting their money back. I have a Guess purse and it has lasted me forever, and the quality is amazing (and it was cheaper than the celeb endorsed product). I think it doesn’t come down to the celeb who endorses it but the quality of the product.

As for the lip kits I have never tried them (but I do recall reading a lot of negative reviews on twitter) and they weren’t from “haters”, these were from people who had purchased the product and were dissatisfied. Those reviews, rather than person who “made” them influenced my decision to not waste my money on the product.

      Hi Stephanie2494,
That was exactly what I was saying 🙂 don`t not try or at least look into trying a product that you`re interested in because it happens to be attached to a personality you don`t like. I completely agree with your reasoning, if you don`t want to try something because you aren`t interested in it, or you`ve seen bad reviews that makes sense to me, however not trying an interesting product because of the personality is what makes me say people could be missing out? I think things got a bit misconstrued because I used kylie cosmetics and the kardashian/Jenner “”clan”” as an example. Like I said in an earlier comment, maybe I should have used Paris Hilton or Britney Spears and their cosmetics and fragrances as an example lol. Oh well, I`ve had so many great points brought up on this thread anyway:)
Thanks for your contribution, I really appreciate it 🙂

I wish the Guess watches were higher quality! I got a watch and within two months, the band started breaking…and for $200, I was so disappointed. Good to hear the bags are really good.

Their bags and wallets are really good quality, mine usually last for years and that`s with daily use.

Celebs are styled and dressed by professionals, people who’ve gone to makeup or hair styling school and have most likely worked for years in the fashion and beauty industry. When I see Kylie or her sisters all dressed up I’m looking at some professionals artwork; Kylie and her sisters are just blank canvases for stylists to work on. After all, if the sisters were such experts, why would they pay thousands of dollars hiring these stylists in the first place, right?

Kylie hasn’t taken on a student loan and struggled through makeup school. She hasn’t apprenticed or worked in the beauty industry. She hasn’t worked with different personalities, different skintones or different skintypes. Other than picking out the shades, I highly doubt she has much knowledge in how her products are formulated.

So when it comes to cosmetic brands I’d like to try, Kylie Cosmetics is not anywhere on my list. I’d much rather buy Charlotte Tilbury, Bobbi Brown or Pat McGrath, professional makeup artists, who’ve actually worked with celebs and models for years to hone in their craft before releasing their own line of products.

I’d also look into brands such as MAC who donate 100% from the sale of their VIva Glam line of cosmetics to AIDs research and give you a free lipstick in exchange for every 6 empty MAC product packaging. At the very least I know my empty mac pots and lipstick bullets are recycled properly, and at the most I get a new lipstick. #winning

Do I think I’m missing out by not trying Kylie Cosmetics? Not at all.

As for celeb perfumes, I’ve only ever bought J Lo Still and my taste buds have evolved to where I now prefer less commercially recognised brands.

Hi Gilded, thank you so much for responding to my post, I really appreciate your feedback. In regards to the Kylie Cosmetics brand, I simply used it as an example because I am currently coveting a hoard of her products lol. I maybe should have used a fragrance not associated with that family and not mentioned them as now everyone seems to think I`m saying that everyone is “”missing out”” on kylie stuff. What I meant was that IF people are interested or have read good things or have had a friend recommend a product to them that happens to be a “”celebrity”” brand or endorsed by a celebrity, then they should give it a go and not worry about who endorses it.
I definitely didn`t mean to say that people were missing out because I have a preference to a certain product, just that they shouldn`t overlook a potentially good thing 🙂
I personally love Charlotte Tilbury as well, amongst many other brands I must admit. I actually own more Charlotte Tilbury products than Kylie ones, but like I said maybe I should have used Paris Hilton fragrances as an example instead or something lol.
      Thank you for your response:)

Hi Glided, I think often people have different and many aspirations in life so Kylie or any other individual may have started in one profession but gained knowledge and experience through time.

I choose products based on whether I like it or not, I don`t want to look like Kylie but if her products are good, I will buy it.

I personally cannot afford too many expensive products and brands like MAC. I wish I could but right now, I am saving for my family and my future. I love how they support AIDS research, it`s wonderful.

If an incredible opportunity such as starting a makeup line came my way, I`d be crazy to not seize that opportunity. But somewhere I think I would carry this guilt that its unfair and undeserving that an opportunity like that would be taken away from people who`ve actually put in blood and sweat into perfecting their craft. But then, who said life was fair?!

I also don`t have an issue with people who purchase and enjoy using Kylie Cosmetics. Its a democracy we live in after all. I was simply pointing out why I don`t buy her stuff and the values which leads me to make these purchasing decisions.

Hell yeah Gilded! Well put & ditto!

I admit i sometimes wont buy something because it’s endorsed by someone that i particularly don’t like but i don’t shun celebrity products entirely,i love the perfume Reese Witherspoon released but as another person said was quite disappointed with Dita von Teese’s perfume. I love the Katykat lipsticks too but i really don’t want to buy any Kardashian products because i just don’t like the family,as it has been said there are plenty of similar and/or better products out there to try so i don’t feel like I’m missing out at all .

Damn it! Dita von Teese! I`ve got about a million pairs of Dita-von-Teese-lacy-racy-date-knickers, as I call them. They`re made of cobwebs at the front & mosquito netting on the @r$# & they were all $2 at Target. Damn it! OK, I own a celebrity endorsed product.

I`m going to have to stop over at Tar-zhayy and check out these spider spun cobweb knickers now. 😉

      • 6 yrs, 12 mths ago

I bought mine about two years ago, no longer available Gilded! I really like them, they`re very comfy. Every time I went back, they got cheaper & cheaper. That`s how I ended up with so many of them.

😀 This made me laugh so much! I wanted those when they first came out but from memory my boobs & butt were too big lol!

The knickers were terrible anyway, so you`re not missing out on much.
Can`t say I ever tried the bras though, because they never came in my size.

You dodged a bullet Mrs Cleaver! 😉

hahahah I have a heap of her knickers too! Cobwebs are a LOT stronger than her knickers turned out to be!

I haven’t tried any of the Kardashian fragrances, I find them irritating and unintelligent so I don’t want to try them.

I love Britney’s Curious, I haven’t found anything similar to this and it smells so lovely.

Going to pretty much echo Stickyskip’s first paragraph. I also don’t believe I am “missing out” by not trying the Kylie line. Is she the ONLY one who makes lip kits, or highlighters or blushes? no, are hers the best on the market and totally original and unique in formulation you cannot buy anything like it? also no.

I personally find the Kim K fame is distasteful (she got famous from a porn tape remember?) then the other family members coming up with ridiculous named blushes like Virginity and Barely Legal sorry but I have teenage daughters and I find it demeaning to objectify women and sexuality like that. The K family may not find exhibitionism objectionable and think the whole thing is a business opportunity but I choose not to support that.

As for other celeb collabs I use them if I like them – that damn Britney perfume range is still one of my all-time faves even though I have at least 50 perfumes and many of them 5 or 10 times the price, but the Britney, Rihanna and recently the Ariana Grande have some quite nice ones too.

I have heard young girls say they want to try the Kylie cosmetics range so they can look like she does, her look isn`t achieved by cosmetics, that is a whole a lot of plastic surgery. I wear make up (and I admit to it) but I wear it for me and to enhance my own features, I have never worn it to emulate the look of a celeb. I personally think that is a shocking message for young girls as these celeb looks are not””real”” l and they are not achievable for the average person.

Yes those shade names!!! SO INAPPROPRIATE for her target market (which she`s clearly aware of). Strange.

Yeah, I have to admit I’m also guilty of not trying a celeb endorsed product if I don’t like the celebrity trying to sell it. Personally I cannot stand the Kardashian/Jenner clan but that’s because I’m not into the celebrity hype. I’m sure the Kylie Lipstick etc is fantastic but I don’t want any of my hard earned money going on them. Seriously they live in the public eye and for the most part seem to enjoy it. I think they’re rich enough, I’m more into helping out smaller businesses but it has to be cruelty free, as I detest animal testing and I prefer the product is Australian made. Each and everyone else to their own, I’m just not into celebrity products

      Hi Shelleygarwood,
Thank you so much for responding to my post, I really appreciate your input and understand your reasoning.
I have to say I definitely admire your stance on Australian made, cruelty free products.
Thank you again for your response 🙂

I have to admit I am one of those people who won’t even bother with a product if it is endorsed by somebody I don’t like. And I can’t stand the Kardashians. I’m sure some of Kylie’s products are great, but not great enough for me to put aside my dislike of the whole celeb “thing” and give her my money. I’d rather support smaller indie brands that stand for things I support, like no animal testing, being Australian made (though I do love Besame, which is made in the US) etc. I’d never leave dreadful reviews on something I hadn’t tried, but I’m not going to spend my cash on a brand that I don’t like. For whatever reason I happen to dislike it. 🙁

That said, I tried Katy Perry’s new range of lipsticks and was very impressed by them. So I’m a giant hypocrite sometimes. I don’t really have an opinion on her, one way or another, but her kitty cat matte range is great. Suppose it goes to show that there are some great “celeb” products out there. And how polarising people like the Kardashians are.

Fragrances are a tricky one though. I have never found a celeb fragrance that I liked wearing. I know of plenty that smell DELICIOUS on other people, but they often tend to be quite sweet, fruity scents and I just dont think they suit me. I was super disappointed with Dita Von Teese’s fragrances too.

      Hi Stickyskip,
Thank you for responding to my post, when I wrote this post I wasn`t expecting as many responses, so thank you for taking the time 🙂
I completely understand your reasoning for not wanting to try a particular brand, honestly I just brought up Kylie Cosmetics as an example because I have fallen so in love with the products.
I just love trying out new products regardless of who makes them and was hoping people would consider putting aside their dislike for celebs and try a product if it looked interesting to them rather than not as I personally have found a couple of gems.
      Thanks again for responding:)

  • Ummm… i don’t really follow the celeb section on this forum. And I don’t follow any celeb trends/products in general. But I haven’t seen any mean comments made on other sections of the forum lately. I feel that this community is lovely! People are entitled to express their opinions and it is great to hear different perspectives.

I am aware of the Kylie Cosmetics line of products but I am one of those who would not pay attention to them because they don’t appeal to me and I really would rather spend my money somewhere else. I generally do not buy things that are celebrity endorsed anyway – I found it strange to be reminded of a particular celebrity when I use products. I don’t really feel that I am missing out – there are so many other different products I can try/ buy which are not particularly endorsed by anyone.

I can also see where people are coming from if they do not want to purchase anything endorsed by a particular individual/”clan”. Just as some people completely avoid brands from head companies who are not against animal testing (i.e. L’oreal sells their products in China and it implicates all its subsidiary brands, even though those brands may have fantastic products). And then there are some other people who have very strong preference for Australian made products. It simply comes down to whether the manufacturer/spokesperson has values that align with the individual customer.

Hi skincare junkie, thank you for replying to my post!
I completely agree that I think everyone in this community is lovely, I`ve never encountered any negative responses between members at all, it was simply a handful of articles that I had read and they were only ever negative towards the celebrities endorsing products.
I definitely agree that people should not be swayed by a celeb endorsing something if that is not aligned with their consumer beliefs, or if they simply did not want to, I meant that I felt that some people had judged a product due to its endorsement without trying it first and possibly were allowing their dislike for the endorser shade their perception of the actual product.
I`ve really appreciated your response to my post.
      Thank you 🙂
