Using BaByliss Paris Homelight IPL (Permanent Hair Removal) Device

I won a BaByliss Paris Homelight IPL device through a beautyheaven comp (Thank you beautyheaven & BaByliss!).

It’s listed on beautyheaven here: http://www.beautyheaven.com.au/body-health/hair-removal/product/homelight-connected-ipl-hair-removal
My review has finally been published.

There are a few contraindications. This device is not suitable for treating nipples, genitals or men’s beards. IPL is not for everyone, eg. those with dark skin tones; blonde, white or grey hair; diabetics (say what?); epileptics; plus other conditions.

There is more fine print too: you need to avoid sun exposure to a freakish degree for weeks at a time! Outdoorsy types might have trouble complying.

For those considering purchasing this device, you don’t want to fork out $750 then discover it’s unsuitable for your needs, or you’re an unsuitable candidate for IPL treatment. For this reason, I intend to reproduce long (BORING!) pages from the instruction manual. This will mean pages & pages of my own posts, lol. I’ll make it obvious when I’m directly quoting from the manual & when I’m adding my own tips & comments. I’ll use bold headings so you can quickly scroll to the info you want. The little manual is thick, but it’s picture heavy & IT’S IN EASY TO UNDERSTAND ENGLISH!

After months of use, I’m definitely seeing a reduction in regrowth, so the journey is worth it! My pits are virtually 100% hair free, my legs still have some hair, but it’s now very fine.

    It`s great, isn`t it, lindarose3048? I`m still loving mine!

Sadly the product page has been taken down, so I can no longer read the review(s). If you don’t mind sharing, how do you feel about this product now that it’s been a couple of years?

There’s a really great deal on ShaverShop’s eBay store atm, only $150, but I’m wondering if I should just bite the bullet and get the more exxy Braun – seeing that my only experience with BaByLiss is a dreadful hair straightener I owned ages ago, whereas my Braun epilator has been my loyal companion for the past 14 years, working without a glitch ever.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, BeeAy! I`ve been offline for an uncharacteristically long time.

I`ve also got a Braun epilator that`s been going strong for – hmm, about 18 years!

My pits are completely bare now – yay! The darker, coarse hair that grew behind my knees & up the back of my thighs is gone now, too. But, I`m still getting fine, light hairs growing on my legs in some patches.

I think the flash of the BaByliss isn`t as strong as when it was new: I`m not sure though. Perhaps it just seems weaker because it`s not zapping black hair anymore? Overall, I`m still more than happy with my results now, compared to before using the IPL device. I do recommend IPL; but would I recommend a BaByliss device over a Braun one? That`s hard to say because I`ve also got a very high opinion of Braun. Sorry if that seems inconclusive.

Using Homelight Connected on Facial Areas

As facial skin is particularly delicate & sensitive, its epilation requires very special attention. In this respect, the BaByliss Homelight Connected has a sensitive area filter. Selective & ultra precise, its smaller surface with a filter to reduce the light intensity is designed to adjust treatment to the sensitivity of facial skin.

    • Never look directly at the area being treated when using the device.
    • Always wear the safety glasses when treating the facial area.
    • The sensitive area filter is appropriate for treating your cheeks, upper lip & chin,
    • Do not use for epilation of eye lashes, head hair or eyebrows.
    • This product is not appropriate for full removal of male beard.
    • For your comfort & safety, we recommend you have someone help you for the first few sessions using the Homelight Connected on your face.
    • To epilate the face, it is imperative that you use the sensitive area filter. Its smaller surface with a filter to reduce the light intensity is intended to treat the face gently. Do not use Homelight Connected on the face without the sensitive area filter.
    • The Precise Mode is required when removing facial hair.
    • DO NOT USE THE FAST MODE TO TREAT THE FACE OR SENSITIVE AREAS.

Your face should be shaven, clean & dry with no remnants of a cream or lotion.

Please do not try to remove hair (whether with, for example, an electric epilator, tweezers or with wax) before using the Homelight Connected. Epilation (removing hair by its roots) renders pulsed light treatment ineffective.

    1. Place the sensitive area filter on the application surface located on the head of your Homelight Connected before connecting it to a suitable mains power outlet & switching it on. To put it in place, carefully take hold of the ends of the sensitive area filter with your thumb & index finger & gently but firmly press it onto the head of the appliance. Ensure that the filter is correctly positioned.
    2. Plug in the unit & press the ON button to switch it on.
    3. Wait about 1.5 seconds (at level 1), the READY indicator light will come on. The appliance is now ready to release the first pulse. The appliance is set to the lowest power setting by default. The power indicator light for level 1 is lit. To treat the face, it is strongly recommended that you adjust the appliance to the lowest light intensity: level 1.
    4. Please wear safety glasses when using this appliance.
    5. Firmly press the applicator surface against your skin so that contact is full. Once the applicator surface is in full contact with your skin, the READY indicator light will light up.
    6. Press the flash release button. The appliance will release a pulse onto the skin & the READY indicator light will go out.
    7. Remove the applicator surface from the treated area of skin.
Wait 5 seconds, then move the applicator surface to another area to be treated.
    8. After 1.5 seconds (at level 1), the READY indicator light will light up again. The appliance is then ready to release another pulse. Again, wait 5 seconds before moving the applicator surface to another area to be treated.
To treat the face, it is imperative that you wait 5 seconds between flashes. The duration of the Homelight depilation session on the face should not exceed 10 minutes.
    9. To remove the sensitive area filter, switch off the appliance & disconnect it from the mains. Take hold of the filter by carefully pressing the two ends between the thumb & index finger & remove it from the head of the appliance. Caution, the appliance surfaces may be hot. Do not touch the filter lens with your fingers.

from the manual “Modes of Use” cont.

    Fast – Continuous Flash Mode
When the applicator window is correctly applied to the skin & the flash activation button is held in, the user can activate the Fast Mode (continuous release of 36 pulses per minute at level 1, fewer pulses for higher levels). In this way, there is an automatic continuous release of pulses without the need for additional handling.

You can easily slide the appliance over your skin without interruption in a slow & continuous movement without lifting or lowering it.
    • If you lift the appliance while holding the flash activation button pressed in, the Fast Mode remains active. But for your safety, no pulse is released until the appliance is in full contact with your skin. Ensure that the contact sensor that forms the contour of the appliance’s applicator surface is perfectly & firmly pressed against your skin to guarantee operation of the continuous flashes in the Fast Mode. If you break the contact between the applicator surface & your skin, you have 5 seconds to adjust the appliance to have full contact with the skin while holding the flash activation button pressed in. If, after 5 seconds, contact is not full, the Fast Mode will deactivate & you will have to let the flash activation button go & press it again to restart Fast Mode.
    • If you lift the appliance & let go of the flash activation button, the Fast Mode will be deactivated.

The Fast Mode is suitable with people who already have some experience with & some dexterity using the appliance. With 36 pulses per minute (on level 1, fewer pulses with higher levels) the Fast Mode lets you treat larger areas of your body more safely & more quickly: legs, back, arms, torso &c. For the sensitive areas & face, use the Precise Mode.

    Automatic Shut-Off Feature
If the appliance is left for more than 10 minutes, it will automatically shut itself off. The ON/OFF indicator light will then be orange. To use the appliance again, the user must press the ON button & reset the appliance to the desired power level.

After a longer break than I’d intended …

    Back to the manual …

    Modes of Use

    Precise = Manual Flash Mode
The Manual Flash Mode allows for safe treatment of the least accessible & most sensitive areas of your body (face, underarms, bikini line &c). Be careful when treating your face. Make sure you attach the sensitive area filter on the appliance head.

    Philips
Lumea Advance SC1997 IPL Long Term Hair Removal System is still $399.95 from the Shaver Shop. It definitely works 🙂

me an my partner are thinking of getting one but I’m blonde an its saying is not good for most areas u want be hairless i don’t get why u cant with dark skin tones; blonde, white or grey hair; diabetics (say what?); epileptics; plus other conditions. for the price u have be able to get rid of any hair anywhere .

    • 6 yrs, 10 mths ago

Because the way it works is by targetting darker pigment. So if you have dark skin it could possibly target the pigment in the skin and you could end up with serious burns. If your hair is blonde, white or grey it doesn`t have the pigment to be attracted to so it doesn`t work. Epileptics it has to do with the flashing light. I don`t know about diabetics and lasers/ipl. There are some great articles, forums and product reviews here on BH regarding ipl/laser both professional and at home. I strongly recommend thorough research before considering such a treatment/product. Good luck.

Thank you misfortune8! I’ve always wondered about at home IPL machines, it’s extremely difficult to find thorough reviews. Have you had any IPL sessions in the salon before and how did it compare to the at home machine?

    • 6 yrs, 10 mths ago

I had salon laser treatments (similar but different) on my lady bits, then I had a series of salon IPL treatments on my legs, but it only got rid of a streak of black hair at the back of my thighs. The rest of my leg hair is dark brown to almost ginger. The salon IPL wasn`t as effective as the laser.

Cost wise – the home machine is HANDS DOWN CHEAPER!

      • 6 yrs, 10 mths ago

Oh fudge yeah. I`m definitely going to be looking into getting one. I hate shaving and whipper-snipping my legs. Over it.

  • 6 yrs, 10 mths ago

I’ve just come across this and I think the amount of information you’ve shared is absolutely bl@#dy awesome. Seriously. I think it’s great BH has created forums because they themselves (as a business) are limited as to how much information they are able to publish. But as a forum member, you are not as restricted. m8, you’re wonderful and I thank you for it!!!

Thanks Duck! I`m lucky I can type around 70 words per minute, otherwise this would be completely undoable!

Found an excellent article explaining the IPL and how devices can differ (therefore in prices, I guess)

Smooth Skin Bare that I use is very safe as it uses lowest energy setting of one low intensity – 3 J/cm2 (that it allows it also to pulse recharging so darn fast…fastest so far on the market), but this means also longer time to see results. Also it needs to be used once per 7 days in first 12 weeks as setting is low.
    https://www.wearebodybeautiful.com/smoothskin-bare-review/#intensity

Pricier devices come with button that allows you to change intensity levels and they can go higher for those people who can tolerate. So you can pick. And they are to be use less frequently (as they are stronger! and you do not want to damage your skin)

IPL fluency varies between 3 and 50 J/cm2. At home ones usually go from 3-6 J/cm2. So when exploring your devices look for: intensity, settings, suitability, look for corded ones, and if possible unlimited number of flashes…or lots of them hehe…then compare prices

No IPL device has truly unlimited flashes, but the internal globe is supposed to have a VERY long life. As long as you`re not using the device commercially, the globe won`t need replacing.

The frequency of the BaByliss is in the manual, which I`m yet to type out & upload.
