I have always been using Philips epilators. They last forever!
I had a total of two. I have been suing my current one for 10 years now. The reason i got the second one is because Philips came up with a new model and i was keen to try. -

I just recently updated my Philips epilator….it was the older model which was not for wet use…I really liked the tweezers on my old Philips one but went for the Braun silk epil 7.. so far so good…I’m not interested in the additional features such as facial cleansing brush and just wanted an epilator I could use over entire body

Waaaah my epilator just died! Like 5 minutes ago! Charges up but the lights and none of the heads work (it has interchangable epilator, trimmer and shaver!). So annoyed! I think I’ve only had it under 3 years. My last one I got 7+ years. Perhaps because it’s a wet/dry one it doesn’t last as long 🙁

I have a really old Phillips epilator that I bought about 16 years ago that is still going and I use it almost every week. An electrician mate fixed the cord when it became damaged but it still works perfectly. I actually won a Braun Silk -Epil a couple years ago but it isn’t as effective at pulling out hair as my old Phillips one, so the Braun has been sitting in my drawer, only used it twice as I got frustrated with it. They don’t make ’em like they used to!! ;-))

How long is an epilator supposed to last for? I have had mine for…a good 15 yrs, still going strong. I had a look recently at epilators at Big W, and they don’t seem to have changed very much. I take good care of mine, but it gets a good work out every fortnight.

I sometimes use an epilator and one definite advantage over waxing at home for me is that it gets even the shortest hairs and waxing if you DIY only gets the longer hairs and so you need to wait to do it.
I actually find that I get more ingrown hairs from epilating compared to shaving but that might just be my skin and hair type. Definitely lots of exfoliating and creams like bump erazor are in order to prevent the ingrown.

Great topic. I have a question: I had prednisone in hospital for an MS episode, (an autoimmune disorder) but that was 2 and a 1/2 years ago now. Is it safe for me today to use an IPL Hair remover? [I’m unsure if using it could trigger my immune system to attack my myelin (stuff around the nerves) in my spine. ]

I am not 100% sure, but I don`t think AI is a contraindication to IPL in the sense that it`ll stimulate antibodies or interact with previous treatments, that doesn`t mean it`s NOT a contraindication. You will have to speak with a clinical aesthetician and your doctor on that note.
I have Lupus and a light intolerance (my skin is affected by blue through to UV light, so no sun for me). I`ve not personally had IPL, nor have I been on steroids, but I was on chemotherapy drugs to slow my immune system, I was not contraindicated for any kind of hair removal. I`m in the middle of a waxing module in Dip. Beauty Therapy, and our forms don`t have them listed. I can ask about IPL/Laser C/Is, but I think it might be more of a problem when it comes to sensation in the skin (as people with MS have altered sensation and motor control).

It is a little hand-held machine with many tweezers at the base. When turned on the tweezers rotate extremely quickly and pluck the hair from the skin. It`s like waxing, but no wax strips – you use the little machine instead. You can still get ingrown hairs from using an epilator, so always use a soothing cream designed to prevent ingrown hairs after epilating/waxing/shaving. Also exfoliating beforehand in a warm shower will help to prevent ingrown hairs. It lasts as long as waxing does, as it is pulling the hair from the root. In terms of if its better than shaving, that`s all personal preference. Epilators can a be a touch painful when you start using them, but your skin will gradually get used to it after using it 2 or 3 times and will just feel like little pinches. It does last much longer than shaving.
