When bub is sick

i have a question for when babies get sick. we’ve just had that stomach bug but he hasn’t YET. can you give a baby anything other than panadol for vomiting and diahorrea? of course if he gets it i’ll go to the GP but in the meantime or do they just have to ride it out?

Willisa, I just read your post re your youngest have the icy-pole hydralite at the hospital. I managed to get 5 mls by syringe into my daughter and I thought I was so clever. That took me 15 minutes. The nurse came back to check and I was so excited that I`d got some fluids into her. She checked and said “”aarrgh, I`m really sorry but 5mls is nowhere near enough””. I tried so hard. Poor baby had to have that tube down her nose.
So my advice is definately get the hydralite and when you think they are a bit dehydrated, start offering to your baby, don`t wait until they are dehydrated. 🙂

Keeping up with the fluids is essential. At the hospital one time with my missy we had to try and get some hydralite into her. It wasn`t enough though and she ended up on a nasal feeding tube to rehydrate her quickly.
Try to keep some hydralite on hand, you can get it in a bottle but the icy-pole style are great for just keeping in the cupboard (keep one in the fridge so its cold if you should need it quickly).

Hey P75, go and get some gastrolite icy poles. My youngest was really really sick with gastro for a solid couple of days, to the point where she was refusing her bottle and when we got to the hospital one of the nurses produced one of these icy poles and Charlotte downed the whole thing in less then ten minutes and perked straight up. She still took a few days to begin eating again, but she was happy with the icy pole and I knew she was staying hydrated.

Now I always keep some in the freezer just in case. I get them from our local chemist!!

Fingers crossed he doesn`t get sick though, sounds like your Aunt might be right!!

well so far so good, he has managed to avoid getting the bug. my aunty (baby health guru) said he may have given it to us from his rota virus immunisation, so i hope that is the case. thanks mummies for your help.

Keep your bubs FLUIDS intake up and make sure they are kept hydrated. You can get those electolites (not sure of spelling) from the Pharmacy for hydration however when in doubt call your GP.

You shouldn`t give panadol for vomiting and diahorrea , only fever and to ease pain. How old is bub? If on cows milk and gets diahorrea, just water it down or reduce this intake, but up the water.

My baby had this bug a few months ago and both the doctor and the hospital told me to alternate with Panadol and Nurofen giving him them both regually to keep away any fever and also just to keep up with the fluids. You just have to ride it out and believe me it is not plesent.

Yeah…P75 I`m afraid so – keep up the fluids and if he has a temp all means give him panadol. And yes you have to ride it out unfortunately. If he starts to convulse and it gets really bad take him to the doctor straight away. hope your family gets better – and your baby does`nt get it – theres nothing worse than being sick and having a grumpy baby to contend with.
