Sleep with chesty cough
Sleep with chesty cough
Callum has started getting a really bad cold the past few days and today the cough seemed to be alot more chesty and phlemmy so I gave him the kids dimetap but it didnt do much. After his bath this evening i put heaps of vicks vaporub (the kiddies one) on his chest but I think it myt be breaking up all the crap in his chest cos hes getting coughing fits like hes tryin to get the phlem up but cant and its catching his breath which is obviously waking him up and its making him really upset and stressed.....does anyone have any ideas how i can help him???

Hey darling, so sorry to hear Callum is feeling bit under the weather and I seriously get so upset when little ones arent well. You really need to try and break down that phlem. If you have the following in the house...and if your happy for callum to eat spices, these warming herbs can help break it down. Mum makes a concoction of, honey, lemon juice, ginger, cayenne pepper and if she has on hand, cloves, garlic etc...put into a pot with water and simmer away til thick like cough syrup. The spicier the better as it will reduce congestion...(have you noticed when u eat spicy food your nose is clearer? well this is also meant to break down mucus/phlem as well)
I will ask mum if she has other suggestions but the above has worked most of the time for me...and it doesnt taste nearly as bad as it sounds.
She said if you can somehow purchase a vaporiser, if not...put vicks vaporub or eucalyptus oil in a bowl of steamy water (not too hot for his gorgeous little face to get burnt) and put a towel over his head and let him breathe in the vapors....this is meant to break it down too. If he gets fidgety try singing songs together to waste time.
Oh and another thing...have you tried elevating him in his sleep..putting a towel under the mattress near his head so that when he coughs the phlem wont interfere with his breathing as much.
And try to cut back milk and night time...I know its hard but I always get phlemmy after drinking milk...and it will make it worse.
awww poor little vegimite
lift his cot up at one end so his head/chest is a bit higher then his feet .. if possible , use a phone book or something .. or put a pillow under his chest n head .. id say a vaporiser is THE best thing ... i got one from the chemist .. i have seen them at big W etc .. u may even be able to hire one from a chemist .. im not sure ..
id maybe think about going to see a 24 hour doc if u have one near you .. he may be able to give you something to help him sleep better , as in ease the cough for now .
the cough is a good thing tho .. he needs to get the phlem out as much as possible .. u can also put baby vicks on his feet .. ill keep thinking too !
if he is really struggling .. or you think he needs it .. go to the bath room , run the shower , hot so that its all steaming in the bathroom .. bring callum in and sit with him in the room filled with the shower steam .. dont worry about the water .. callum is more important lol !
the steam will help heaps !
thanks bb i will def try that concoction!! I have the steamer on in his roomer with eucolyptus in it to help.
Lol i tried to elevate his mattress but he rolls rond so much he ended up across it then with his feet elevated!!! oh well
I feel so sorry for him!! Do u ned to make that stuff fresh each time u give it to them?
thanks emms they are all good suggestions to.
As for the doc it'd prob be worse for me to bring him, i dont drive so for us to get there i would have to bring him out in the storms.
I am trying to keep him warm by going up all the time to put his blankets over him again, he moves too much to keep them on and now hates his grobag
aww .. elaine !!! your doing everything that is right :D id be doing what you are :) and YES keep home out of the weather :) i understand what its like with a baby that sleeps like a ball .. rolling from one end to the other !
No Elaine you can make that mixture in a big batch....I think I am missing some ingredients..like chilli and star anise and cinnamon sticks....but ginger and cayenne is very warming and has great properties in breaking down phlem.
I know what you mean about moving around....Zade sleeps thru the nites but he wiggles about so much, and the angles I find him in..lol..that I wake up and always put the covers back over him all the time...and I look like crap and he looks great in the morning...lol the things we do huh!
Big warm hugs for Callum from me...and Zade learnt how to blow kisses today so there are a few of those in there for Callum too...I hope the little man gets better soon! xo
i know we spoke about this in a diff thread everyones bubs seem to fly around the place while in bed. I duno how they get him to sleep in a 'big boy bed' in daycare, i reckon if he had no rails here he'd be straight out on the floor!!
haha awwww thats really cute anout Zade learning to blow kisses .. bet it melted your heart when he did it :)
im dreading the day my boy climbs outta his cot .. or falls out !! :O he just learnt to climb the couch ... he has a thing for the wooden slat blids lol
I know I got all teary..I cant get over that he will be 1 in May!! He has also learnt to meow like the cat, point at the cat and say cat over past few days since I have been staying at mum and dads place...can u tell he loves cats?? :P Zade hasnt fallen out of his cot yet....thats my worst nightmare!
aww my son is 1 in may too ! im dreading that he will climb out .. i even had a night mare about it !
callum is a real climber to, even climbing bookcases but hasnt yet climbed the cot. thank god, they reckon if they start trying to put them in a bed, its safer to fall from a bed then the top rail of a cot!!!
Poor little bubbah Callum, Elaine! Hope he's getting better, poor little thing xoxo
Thanks GB!!! I hated bringing him out this morning hes still so chesty its like a cat purring when hes bringing his whole ribcage rattles!!! And the rain just did not let up, we got soaked waiting for the bus and i couldnt find my broly :( hopefully this wont make him worse!!!
aw no elaine thats not good ..!
i was hoping to hear he was a bit better , did u take him to work with you or send him to daycare?
he had to go to daycare...i would love to take him to work with me!!! at least its only one bus to daycare, its 3 to my job!!!
Today he seems a bit better, but hes still coughing up phlem, has runny nose and has just fallen asleep on my lap and is sooo raspy in his breathin. Feel so sorry for him, he cant even eat!!! I think he has the virus he was in hospital with a few months ago but just not as severe.
He was so funny earlier, he was farting away for ages and went into hysterics everytime he did, and wen he was laughin he was fartin more, he could barely breath he was laughin so much!!! i think it was releiving for him, like that the wind was hurting his belly but once it was out he felt better.
BB i tried ur recipe, think maybe i done it wrong, he just threw up!! lol. never was a good cook!!
Oh nooo poor lil callum, i feel so awful now!! :( mum always gave it to us....dunno what went wrong then.....
Maybe just stick with lemon and honey drinks....maaaan i feel so bad!
Are you using saline drops for his nose and sucking that out so that it doesnt run down into his throat and chest. Poor little man all you can do is wait it out....Zades been ill over past day too....just makes me cry seeing him not himself.
Hi elaine, I hope Callum is feeling better. My little boy has had an awful cough for days but the vapouriser does really help, as does elevating his cot. We just put some magazines under one end. Giving him a drink of warm apple juice and water might help as well. Brisblonde's suggestion about the saline drops is good too, those sucker things work well.
Hopefully Calluma and Zade will both be well soon, it is so upsetting to see your child sick.xxxx
Poor lil Callum. I hope he's feeling better today Elaine! xoxoxo
hows the lil guy doing elaine ?
BB dont feel bad i probly done something wrong!!! Besides it could just be him cos the only thing he will eat or drink at the min is milk and nurofen!!! So he prob just decided he didnt want to keep it in his lil belly!!! Oh is zade ok?? hope hes feelin better!!
Thanks girls for ur well wishes your all so sweet. I havnt tried the saline drops i must give it ago although hes very strange about his nose he hates anyone touching it!! but we'll give it a go!! Hes still quite crook at the min but there is a little bit of improvement. His coughing still sounds like a forty year old smoker but its less often and elevating the cot seems to help a bit so they are goin to elevate his bed in daycare to...hopefully he wont fall out!!! The vicks vaporub seems to be doing wonders though. I just hope he doesnt develop asthma i developed it last yr and its a nightmare. He reminds me of what i was like i had a cough for months and the only thing that would stop it was ventolin. Although i did get fits of coughing where id nearly pass out hes not doin that yet!!
Heres hoping all the BH babies are feeling good and well soon!!! xoxoxox
Good to hear that Callum is doing a little bit better elaine. My doc told me that the cough can hang around in little ones for about four weeks, which means at the moment we have three weeks to go. :-(
So good to hear that Callum is doing better, Elaine. It's horrible when your liitle ones aren't well!!
Sounds like Zade and Callum are going to be twins....Zade has started getting a cough and he is becoming congested in the nose....he projectiled last night and his temperature was around 38...poor bubs was sooo hot. He didnt want to drink his bed time bottle and passed out then for 2 hours he cried non stop...he ended up flaking it next to me in my bed...I had to kick him out though as I was falling off the bed!! He is dosed up on Panadol at the moment...the weather has become normal in Adelaide so hoping he will feel better soon. I was just in tears I had seeing my bubbaboochie so miserable and upset.
Glad to hear Callum is on the mend Elaine! xoxo
