This is a stupid question, but where did you ladies have your/your children`s ears pierced? I have heard that having them done at a pharmacy with a gun is not as sterile as having them pierced with a needle at a piercing place because some parts of the gun aren`t able to be sterilized. Is there any truth in that??

Yep, that`s actually true, cat lover, it`s not a stupid question at all 🙂 but not many people know that so everyone still goes to get their piercings done by gun thinking that it`s the `new technology`. Guns can`t actually be disinfected and could have traces of blood from previous people so diseases like Hep B can be passed around easily. Also, the studs which they pierce your ear with are extremely blunt and tear through the skin and tissue in your ear, forcing the stud into your lobe and doing all sorts of other horrible things too but I won`t go into that :).

When piercings are done by needle, the needles are single use and hollow, meaning that they actually remove part of your flesh, allowing space for the jewellery. These piercings also heal much faster and are healthier, but they are more expensive and harder to do on kids because the process of inserting jewellery and etc can get difficult to do on squirming children who have a needle stuck in their ear.

Gun piercings are actually illegal in some places/countries but really it is your choice and your piercing so it is up to you to decide. Guns can be used quite safely on lobes but never do any other sort of piercing with a gun

OMG!! I`m glad I asked. That`s really scary stuff Greenfinch. Piercing guns ought to be banned, or at least improved so as they can be used safely. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the only safe way to have my ears pierced is with a needle means that I`ll probably never have them done – even the thought of it makes me queasy! Thanks for the info though Greenfinch. It`s good to know:)

I got my ears pierced when I was 12 (I wanted them done earlier than that but my dad thinks young girls with pierced ears look `tarty` – he`s a bit weird that way) and I had them done at a pharmacy with a gun and I never got an infection.
I don`t know what other peoples experiences of piercing guns are, but when I had them done the woman asked me to pick a pair of studs I liked, which she then attached to the gun and used those to pierce my ears with so I don`t really see how you could get an infection as the part that is going into your ear has never been used before. Obviously people bleed a bit but I don`t think its that hard to clean them and even if it isn`t totally clean only the earring is the only part actually going into your ear, unless some piercing guns don`t work that way.
Anyway, they give you a bottle of disinfectant and so long as you use that as instructed, even if you got some old crusty blood in your piercing, you shouldn`t get an infection.

That is the only way I have ever had my piercings done too, with brand new sterile studs, so not sure how it could cause infection etc, surely it would be banned if it were deemed unsafe, especially with tragic diseases like Aids so easily transmitted these days :-O

You`re her parent, it`s up to you. Regardless of what anyone else thinks.
As long as you take care of the piercing, which I know you will.

I personally wouldn`t have my child`s ears pierced, but I don`t have any heritage or religion that sparks that tradition.

I got mine done at 4 weeks(professionally)! i have 4 in each ear now (had them all done before 10 the other 3 had been home jobs) and have my nose pierced(professionally), i also had my belly done (home job, taken out) plus multiple others such as chest/wrist/thigh etc (all home jobbed) it really varies for other people though 🙂

These days getting yours ears pierced only takes seconds and with the way studs are I think that they are pretty safe.
We do all have different opinions and no one opinion is right or wrong.
Be true to yourselves and don`t let other people`s opinion dampen who you are. Both my daughter and son has pierced ears, their choice.

Went down to Hairhouse WH to get my 8-year-old`s ears pierced. She`d been bugging me about it for a while, so I figured, what the heck, I got them done at that age anyway, except that mine was done at a Chinese jeweller who used ginger & manual technique. V scary…

As a nanny, I look after 6 month old twin girls and their ears were pierced a month ago. They dont touch their own or each others ears. I personally would have waited til the child asked but my boss`s opinion is, it`s highly likely most girls will want theirs pierced, why not do it when they`re young and don`t understand as much what`s happening and therefore stress. Each to their own
