Mums out there? Nipple shields? Advice for my sister :)

My sister has mastitis and had huge trouble with her newborn baby. Anyone tried nipple shields and found they helped?

Also good creams to put on after breastfeeding?
She is currently using special wipes that the nurse recommended but they aren’t working very well for her.

unfortunately it’s not an easy thing, breastfeeding. as such i bottle fed my boys, blisters and bleeding were not for me. i do know with my sister she used nipple sheilds and they didn’t help at all, she did use a lanolin product, you could also try a pure shea butter. lots of warm showers for the mastitis too to try and unblock the ducts. poor darling she must be in such a world of hurt. i really feel for her. i hope she feels better soon.

Sorry no advice here, both my bubz never made my boobs hurt during feeding and took to it so well, they really showed me how it is done I’m just lucky! Never had cracked nipples or sore ones.

I had lansinoh ready last preg. Never used and this time I bought avado nipple cream and it’s just laying around unopened

Oh and it’s only the second week for her 🙂

Both times around for me this is when it has peaked in painfulness so I was left feeling how the hell could I possibly do this for another 6+ months. Once it clicks for the both of you, you get these amazing moments where the bub will make eye contact whilst feeding with a look that says this is the best thing in the world, mum! Then there are times when they clamp your nipple between their gums and rip their head away…not as amazing!

You might have posted elsewhere and I missed it but what dud your sus have? Name?

I have 3 sisters but this one is my eldest. She is 33 and it’s her first bub. Her name is Jenny. It’s grown 4cm in too weeks but hasn’t got any fatter. The nurse said he’s going to be even taller than his dad! Oh dear… lol

My boyfriend is short and I am as well so I’m guessing our future babies won’t be tall like this one. My sister is tall and so is her husband.

Your sis can go see a lactation consultant who can help with any breastfeeding issues. Sore nipples can be because the baby isn’t latching on correctly and that is fixable. She can be put into contact with a lactation consultant through the hospital where she gave birth or her maternal & child health nurse. I had recurrent blocked ducts with my first baby and found kellymom.com very helpful with advice on how to treat. Also she can call the Australian Breastfeeding Association Helpline on 1800 686 286. Breastfeeding gets easier and easier as time goes on.

Thanks Janey! I will pass on those details 🙂

Wow that’s great information, thanks for this! I feel they are a bit clueless when it comes to this sort of thing and are not getting the right advice so that’s why I’m on the hunt for good advice. Thanks heaps, she will appreciate it :)xx

pps lanisoh doesnt provide pain relief it just helps the cracks heal faster and stops air from getting into the wound which stings. its more soothing than pain relieving. unfortunately you cant put anything on your nipples to numb the pain as it will numb the bubs mouth and they wont be able to feed properly

ps lanisoh leaves oily stains on your clothes so wear old tshirts to sleep in and breat pads during the day to protect clothing. some of my pj tops are still stained from feeding isaac – 2 1/2 years ago
