Excessive bleeding gums in pregnancy

Hi everyone,

I wonder whether anyone else has experienced excessively bleeding gums when pregnant. When i was pregnant with isaac, every night when i brushed my teeth I’d end up with pink tooth paste. I thought that was bad but it is nothing compared to this time around.

There is one area on my gum that I pretty much just need to touch and it starts really gushing blood. There is a bit of a gap between the teeth here so food always gets caught so I do need to floss and whenever i do blood just pours out. It happens at least 4 times a day, sometimes just by eating. Its worst when I brush – within seconds blood is spilling down my chin and dripping onto my chest and it takes a good minute of rinsing with water before the bleeding ceases.

Any tips on how to stop it bleeding or is this yyet another ‘suck it up your pregnant’ things?

I tried not brushing it in the morning but that made it much worse at the night brush. I use mouth wash after brushing. Iasked the OB I saw for yesterdays check up and her response was ‘oh thats weird – never heard of that’ so not too helpful. I know bleeding gums are normal but this seems excessive.

Any ideas?

I’m going through the same thing right now. Recently, I’d come across an article about it saying that hormonal changes during pregnancy made women more sensitive to bacteria, which then causes the bleeding. In it, they recommended brushing after meals.

So I tried it, and it works for me – it lessened the bleeding quite a bit.

I’ve had a few friends who have complained of bleeding gums while pregnant. I believe it’s fairly common. I know the recommendation for dental care is to try and get a checkup before falling pregnant, as dental issues have been linked with premature delivery.

Thanks! one of my friends said that her dentist told her only to be concerned if the bleeding continues after pregnancy. I feel no pain at all, its just disgusting. Sometimes I will walk out of the bathroom (we have an ensuite) with blood dripping down my chin and ask hubby for a kiss…no surprises he tells me to piss off!! I look like a boxer who is clearly not winning his bout!!

I’ll have to investigate this water pick thing. i havent actually seen one before.

That’s funny 🙂 I’ve never done that to my husband, maybe because the bathroom already looks like a crime scene when i’m done in there.. Ughh gum bleeding is totally normal in pregnancy. My first time it wasn’t too bad but this time around with twins everything is a lot more extreme. Dentist said not to worry about it unless it really hurts as well. OB said not to worry at all.. Sorry, we just have to suck it up and deal with it :))

I had the same problem and I was wearing braces at the time which makes me just asking for problems. I switched to a waterpick and it became less severe. My dentist said not to worry about it unless it was causing me excruciating pain. Good luck!

Hey bs! I do remember my gums being puffier, softer and more inclined to bleed at some stage during my pregnancies (can’t remember what stage exactly but it was probably more closer to the end I think from memory). I think it was probably hormones just doing their usual thing to get the body ready to have the baby – kind of everything softened up a lot for me! I can kindly inform you that my gums are back to normal now and probably did revert back to their usual state after I stopped breastfeeding.

From memory, not a lot was ‘like how it was before’ until I stopped the breastfeeding. (A year to 15 months depending on my bub at the time – I had three.) So I wasn’t completely feeling like my ‘usual’ self for quite a while after but that’s good that the body can slowly self-adjust back to it’s pre-pregnancy state – even the gums! : )

I think I can remember just being more gentle than I usually was while brushing. Maybe switch to an even softer toothbrush if possible. I do remember reading somewhere (probably from one of my pregnancy books that I had) that bleeding gums was pretty normal for a lot of women during pregnancies.

I’d see your dentist. From what I just googled it sounds like pregnancy gingivitis. Also, switch to a soft bristle toothbrush if you aren’t using one already.
