Calling on all you mummies!

Hi Yummy Mummies 🙂

Ok so I have a friends baby shower this weekend and I am stuck on what to buy her.

She is the first to have a baby so Ive never had this dilemma before.

I hate giving presents that arent original and I actually enjoy going to a lot of effort and buying something I know people will love. But this one has got me.

So is there anything you received once you gave birth or prior that you thought was such a fantastic idea and you cant live without??

PS… She is having a girl 🙂

so i have never had kids but i have been to so many baby showers! what i like to do (spesh if you start when u find out there preggers) is buy something small every week. by the time their baby shower comes around u have bought them loads of stuff.

for example i would buy a big basket obviously pink for a girl blue for a boy and white and yellow if they dont know the sex (you can usually get nice ones fro the reject shop)

i fill the bottom of the basket with baby blankets, muslin wraps, cot sheets towels abc puzzle foam floor etc anything bulky that is the right colour. or u can use one of those kids soft fold out lounges instead of a basket they are usually themed and u can them cheap from target etc and they are good for when the kid will belearning to sit up on his own. or a toy box of somesort or a portable baby bath

then on top of that arrange the other things so they can be seen. eg: teddy bears, onsies, cute outfits, dummies, bibs, bottles, nappies, nappy disposal bags, food conatiners, books, toys, baby cream, baby shampoo and conditioners, baby oils, wet wipes, etc

when its all arranged nicely wrap it up in celafane and put a bow on it.

but it can get expensive so i usually start this when i find out they are pregant if they are close to me or u can make a smaller one if u are tight on cash

Definetely nappies! You can’t go wrong there. When I had my bubba a lady I worked with did up this really cute little baby carrier made up of nappies that was very cute & came in very handy! Also 1 or 2 cloth nappies wouldn’t go asray. I find them very handy for crazy days when you suddenly run out of nappies & need to get something on their lil toosh! They’re a lot more effort, but very handy to have just in case.

I was also given a tube of Bonjela which helps with babies teething which can start as early as just a few months after they’re born. The expiry dates are years long so I have never had to purchase another tube & they really save you in the middle of the night when poor bubba is sore & cranky!

Other than that, I was most grateful for the useful things more so than another stuffed toy to add to the 1000 others. Like wipes, baby bath wash, nappy cream. (I found sudocrem the best!) as well as a baby brush for their hair & those booger suckers are something no new mumma can’t live without! 😉

Have fun baby shopping! It is so easy to get carried away by all the cute things. Cute things are nice, but practical are better. Maybe go with a mix? 🙂

A babywipes warmer was great for my latest bubba, who didn’t appreciate a cold wipe on the bum, esp in the middle of the night. Maybe it’s a boy thing, ‘cos it didn’t seem such a big deal with my girls. The brand is called Prince Lionheart. I think they retail at about $50.

Another thing I found really useful was the Ergo cocoon ~ it’s a pouch wth a 2-way zip that keeps the baby snug. Newborns like to be swaddled, but mine kept busting out of his blanket swaddles. Plus, it got uncomfortably warm on some days, so the easy-to-use zip-up pouch kept him nice & cool. Plus, it unzips from the bottom for nappy changing. If you’re getting this, get at least two (to rotate between washes).

I couldn’t find both these things at Target, Big W or Kmart, but they were available at Toys R Us. Better yet, just get ’em from ebay, but ask the seller to take the products out of the box, flatten the packaging & send the lot over to you (so that it doesn’t get all squished & mangled in the post).

One of the gifts which stuck out in my mind were some personalized stuff, which my friend got from TinyMe.com.au ~ if you already know the baby’s name, that is. They have a gorgeous range of baby stuff.

Baby playgyms/playmats are also great. These cost around $50, and some even come with shade, so that mum can bring the bubs outdoors.

As for mum, some luxurious face mask treatments sound heavenly. The Shiseido White Lucent masks are like sleep in a package. As a matter of fact, I need some – right now!

PS. Just saw this on ozsale.com.au ~ cute baby beanbags by Bambeano normally $89 down to $54.

Thanks girls, there are some really good ideas there! I like the basket idea, I was thinking to do something like that. Hopefully it doesnt cost a fortune, I tend to go overboard haha

Catn2kittens, that wiggles story is hilarious!

I love this idea too, it’s called a bath pod, it is in the shape of a ladybug – it attaches to the wall, has a shelf for shampoo and soap, and the ladybug “shell” has a scoop to collect, hold and drain bath toys to keep them tidy and prevent mould 🙂

Hi, there have been some great suggestions already! One thing I got when my babies were born was a beautiful blank hardcover book, to be used as a diary to record little stories and things in. My kids are grown now but I read the books every now and then, they bring back good memories like getting caught in the rain and having to run with the stroller all the way home while my son laughed and clapped, and when my other son “fed the wiggles a sandwich” by stuffing it into the VCR.
Urban Rituelle makes a lovely Mumma Bubba range of products, the baby bath is beautiful and the packaging is gorgeous.
You can get lullaby CDs now called Rockabye Baby which have music by Metallica, Pink Floyd and other adult bands, if your friend is into a particular music style it could be fun.
You can buy nappy bags now that are really stylish, everything from nice sleek leather to funky skull patterned ones.
Don’t forget mum – she will feel like a bedraggled, exhausted milk machine for the first month! Massage oil, hand cream, a refreshing facial or body spritz, or even a pedicure set to celebrate her being able to see – and reach – her feet again!

It depends how much you would like to spend. I always give a new family a minted coin set for the year that the baby is born. You can get them from the post office for around $45-$50 for the basic one or around $100 for the one in a lovely display case. The beauty of these are that they increase in value provided the coins are not removed.

Another thing that I have given that has received huge response has been a medical kit which included things like a digital thermometer, syringes and one of those things to put up a babies nose to get out the gunk. It may not be pretty but all of the new Mum’s that I have given it to say that it was great to have these things on hand and how useful they have been.

Hope this gives you a few ideas. xx

Nappies are always a great idea for any mummy because honestly, until she has the bub, she doesn’t understand just how many nappies she will need haha!
Clothing for the baby in say sizes 000, 00 and 0 are great too because everyone goes crazy and buys a ton of 00000 and 0000 clothes and babies grow so fast that they don’t get a chance to wear majority of the stuff!
Nappy cream – I reccomend Bepanthen OINTMENT (make sure it’s the ointment – the normal one is nowhere near as good as this one).
Find out if she is planning to breast feed or bottle feed, a boomerang pillow will be a god send if she is breastfeeding, it will help her posture when feeding and she can also use it to rest bub on while feeding. If bottle feeding, find out what brand she plans to use and maybe grab a couple?

Bibs and muslin wraps are amazing too as you always need them!

    Hope this helped =)
