What do i wear???

I am going to a matinee of phantom of the opera in melbourne on the weekend, i am in melbourne for work and will be headed to europe for work on sunday. i am trying to minimize how much i am taking with me but dont want to wear work clothes to the theatre.
i am taking a good pair of black cargos and a couple of nice tops, is this acceptable for a theatre matinee??

    You can never go wrong with a black dress. I have a shirt sleeve and long sleeve cotton wrap dress which doesn`t crease when packing and they are so versatile for every occassion.

    for a matinee you dont need to dress up up!
    i wore a lovely nice pair of jeans and dressed it up

    Personally I wouldn`t be wearing cargo`s to the theatre – at any time of day. I probably wouldn`t even wear jeans. Maybe a nice pair of trousers? or a cute dress or skirt? You can always dress up work pants with a nice top. I just feel going to the theatre is a little more formal than usual. I went to the Ballet not long ago and my mum, sister and I frocked up – lucky because some of the people were really dressed up.
