Vintage lead crystal – Would any beauties know anything about this antique crystal shoe?

I was in an antique shop today and I came across this interesting piece of crystal. I bought this as it is absolutely gorgeous. I bought it home and I thought it was for ladies rings, however when I showed my mother she said she thinks it for miniature perfume bottles? She said her grandma (now passed) used to have one just like it in a cabinet and she remembered it from when she was a child.

Would any beauties know anything about this piece of crystal? I would love to know any information about it. I have tried researching it, but no luck. I would love to know what it’s actual purpose is, how old it is, or who could have made it? I don’t know of any forums that would help with identifying it. Thanks!

Excuse my ignorance but why did they put perfume bottles in shoes back then? It seems so strange to me as I cannot see a link between the two….

Some of the 1950s stuff is pretty whimsical and different. The shoe is only tiny, its not like the size of an actual shoe you could wear or anything. At first I thought it was a little strange, but I actually really like it. 1950s makeup compacts were also very out there! A lot of make up compacts featured very interesting compartments to them, or were made to resemble objects. This make up compact is in the design of a telephone:

        Wow, how unique!

This was on Antiques Roadshow just the other night! A lady said she had 500 different compacts, all different shapes, designs and sizes, and she thinks that`s a small collection! Apparently there`s a collectors club and they can collect in the 1000s! I like them, I think they`re lovely 🙂

Gosh, she had 500 of them! That is a lot. The antique shop I was in the other day was selling old cardboard box face powders, and they were like $50 each. They didn`t have any of the fancy compacts. I reckon those would very expensive lol.

Love this compact case but I`m afraid there are probably many BH members wondering how this at all resembles a telephone!

Maybe teens and under wouldn`t know what it was, but surely if they are over 17 they`d know it was a telephone.

Lol I remember these phones. My family used to put a padlock on them to stop people dialling to avoid unwanted phone bills. We were only allowed to make important phone calls hehe….

      • 7 yrs, 8 mths ago

My grandma used to have a little wooden money box next to the phone with a picture of a phone on it with a little poem about remembering who pays the bill if you make a call 🙂

Oh these phones were so darn heavy and thats a little drawer down the bottom where wrote down everyones phone numbers 🙂

      • 7 yrs, 8 mths ago

Haha yeah they are heavy! I used to play with old ones as a child. I didn`t realise it also had a little drawer for numbers.

    I feel your excitement ModernSnowWhite!

How pretty it is with the crystal perfume bottles!

    • 7 yrs, 8 mths ago

It is stunning! Maybe one day I will come across the bottles to complete the set, or find the actual set. From what I can find, it is a rare piece. I can always put my own miniature perfume bottles in it or find some little crystal ones to put inside. At least I know what it is now.

OMG! I FOUND IT I FOUND IT!!!!!!!! After much researching from the help of the collectors website I have found it! It is missing three crystal perfume bottles. Very hard to find. Here’s a picture of the set:

        Hi there,
I have the same exact crystal shoe given to me in 1960`s by my father.
Mine is exactly the same except……it holds small crystal salt shaker, small crystal pepper shaker and a small crystal container in the middle with a small crystal spoon. I believe that that middle section is for saccharin tablets.
I don`t have it at this home..so I can`t take a picture for you. It is beautiful. The shakers are curved to fit the curve of the shoe with the saccharin part between them. And they all sit perched on those steps inside.
        Hope this helped also.

I love crystal and have many different vases, jewelry holders, dishes, lolly jars etc. If I’m not mistake one of my cousins had one of these when we were growing up. I have seen one somewhere. I didn’t realise they were for mini perfume bottles though.

    • 7 yrs, 8 mths ago

I love crystal as well 🙂 wow, would your cousin happen to know anything about it? That is so cool. Yeah, we have now found out it was for perfume bottles.

  • 7 yrs, 8 mths ago

I would guess that your one was purchased separately, not with a specific perfume. The three steps makes me think your mother might be right: 3 miniature perfume bottles.

Not that I know anything about this subject. I’m curious about the answer you get from the Collectors’ Weekly website. I realised from the username you used on that site that you used to be Discomilk! (I was stumped at your current username because I thought I recognised the avatar but couldn’t place it.)

    • 7 yrs, 8 mths ago

It`s interesting, I would like to know more about it or see another one that looks the same. The answer I got from the website was that it could have came with perfume bottles that were also crystal. I might be able to research it more now. Hehehe yeah, I was discomilk but changed my username, I got bored of it lol.

But this one most closely resembles your pic. This is a 1950s Coty Emeraude Perfume In Shoe.

  • 7 yrs, 8 mths ago

… & this one, which is circa 1900. This one was obviously made to go with the perfume & I guess would have been purchased as one.

  • 7 yrs, 8 mths ago

I Googled perfume bottles & spent a lot of time oohing & aahing. Look at these!

    • 7 yrs, 8 mths ago

Oh wow! That is amazing. Gosh, why can`t perfume bottles be made like this now, it`s so interesting.
