Pelvic floor exercises with feedback to let you know if you are doing it right

Ok, so this is a bit personal, but since I had a hysterectomy at 43, I’ve been struggling with incontinence. I know I have tried to work on my pelvic floor, but it doesn’t seem to help.

I was contemplating a pelvic floor physio until I saw perifit advertised online. Figured I’d try it as it was approx. cost of one session with PF physio.

I’ve only had it a couple days, so no real results yet, but it did show me that external PF muscles are pretty decent, but deep internal ones need work.

There’s a phone app with games to test your muscle control (gives new meaning to joystick controller) as well as manual training options.

Interested to see if others have tried this (or anything like it) and how it worked for you, will also let you know how it goes for improving my wee issue.

So, a couple months on, I thought I should report back.

Definitely have better bladder control. The long-term feedback has shown a marked improvement in deep PF control and the immediate feedback helped me isolate/focus on these deeper muscles.

B12 rapimelts have also been part of the regime to reduce the issues I was having.

Highly recommend both options if you are having incontinence issues. So glad I didn’t just accept this as (more than a little) inconvenience of getting older and having had a hysterectomy.

Have you tried using yoni eggs or kegel balls to give your inner muscles resistance to build strength???

Thanks sooty, on and off, but have always suspected I was doing it wrong. Now the feedback shows i was missing the deep core.

Perhaps seeing a Pelvic Floor Therapist for a session and getting some exercises or ideas for what you can do would be useful… Plus using a yoni egg or the balls will give you that little extra… I wish you well on your path and I hope it all works out for you!!!

I haven’t had a hysterectomy, however have had two children naturally. I have issues when I sneeze, laugh or have any sort of cough. I would suggest you go to a gynaecologist and get checked out. I am in the process of doing that now. I actually had a urodynamics test today, which was not fun but the results will show what’s going on with my bladder functions and what steps need to be taken to fix/manage it.

Thanks teapot I do have a regular GP—who is fabulous—and we’ve discussed this in great detail. She’s supportive of strengthening the PF muscles first before going down more testing and specialists (as I’ve spent a LOT of time and money on very good ones over the past few years, but always after ruling out simpler solutions first).

Have you been checked to see if perhaps you have a prolapse? My bladder and bowel have fallen down into the vagina. I need to have it surgically repaired. I’m having it done in a couple of weeks. It is causing me all sorts of continence issues. I also have what has been diagnosed as an ‘irritable bladder’. I have been prescribed medication to help with this. It’s called Ditropan. I had a hysterectomy a long time ago. My kidneys aren’t in great condition. I’ve got everything crossed that the surgery will help fix my plumbing issues, and I fully intend to seek help regarding pelvic floor exercises.

We can be medication twins Rose Im on Ditropan also.

No prolapse Rose, but my mum has had two since her hysterectomy, so I’ve been quite conscious of keeping an eye on things down there, including PF exercises, but had no idea if I was doing them right, or enough.
Hope your surgery goes well and takes cares of the multiple issues for you. Women’s plumbing systems are just too complicated and annoying to manage when things aren’t going right.

Hi MerryGoRound! I am a physiotherapist (but I do not work in the area of women’s health). Generally people find it much more helpful to use strategies where they can receive feedback when it comes to training or activating muscles, so those sorts of devices can be very useful in those situations. I like that you have been proactive!

If you do run into any issues or if you are not finding it effective, I would recommend having at least an initial consultation with a women’s health physiotherapist, as they might be able to rule out if there are any other contributing factors in play (as urinary incontinence can be caused by a few different reasons, not just pelvic floor muscle weakness), and they can complete a full assessment. A good women’s health physio can be worth their weight in gold.

Thanks Lani, know I need to work on PF muscles, but will definitely check out a women’s health physio if that doesn’t resolve the incontinence. I’d never even heard of this specialty until I joined a facebook group about adenomyosis and hysterectomy. So good o know your not alone in these things.

I’ve never heard of the perifit before, MerryGoRound, but I hope it works well for you. I haven’t had a hysterectomy, but after having kids I have to be careful when I sneeze, etc

Oh good luck to you. I hope you see some positive results over time.

I had a hysterectomy around age 50 I think. I was lucky not to have any issues afterwards regarding bladder control. Most likely because years before I had been to see a Physio regarding an over active bladder. Physio was no help there as it turned out I had a good reason to have an over active bladder. I have 4 fully working kidneys which explains why I need to drink a lot to stay hydrated and why my bladder fills quickly. But the good thing was that the Physio made sure I was doing my pelvic floor exercises correctly.

Blimey Meedee four kidneys does explain your overactive bladder. Definitely overachieving there.

      • 4 yrs, 6 mths ago

MerryGoRound I was greedy with the kidneys but short changed on the ovaries….I was only given one of those.

      • 4 yrs, 6 mths ago

Wow Meedee, that must have been fun having to explain every time you had a new doctor over the years.

      • 4 yrs, 6 mths ago

MerryGoRound Thankfully I have the same Doctor. Shes been my Doctor for the past 20 years.

Something I need to do as well someone said just learn to squeeze your pelvic floor muscles and that I would get the hang of it. Just a matter of keeping in practice.

The internet seems to have lots of information on YouTube and you can download PDF information on explaining Pelvic Floor Exercises.
