Money saving tips and apps

Hi everyone.

I thought we could start a thread of money saving related topics. Was wondering if anyone has any good money saving apps they have used. I recently started using cashrewards and love the concept. Also considering getting into online surveys for a bit of extra pocket money. Does anyone have any recommendations in these areas or money saving tips. 2020 has definitely seen me wanting to look at maximizing my money to really save and start investing and using it wisely

There are two differnet approaches to money. One presupposes saving money and cutting expenses. Another stands on increasing the income and keeping expenses as is. I would rather follow the second one, even though it is not easy. I will check here about investment opportunities that are available for the person like me, meaning the one without financial education.

My Myer Credit Card is fantastic. I pay $39 annual fee, and get 1 point for every $1 spent. You get $10 Myer gift card for every 1000 points. I put absolutely everything I can on the Myer Credit Card (except Coles – we have a zero annual fee Coles credit card which earns fly buys points when used in Coles). Every year I get hundreds of dollars in Myer gift card – more than enough to cover the annual fee.

I know a lot of people caution the use against credit cards, but I make sure I pay off the credit card every month during the interest free period and sometimes I pay in advance, before the monthly statement comes out.

I recommend doing focus groups. I belong to several sites and pay is about $50 to about $130. Opportunities are reasonably frequent and range from attending focus groups and nowadays a lot of the research is done via Zoom or online panels (not surveys, these last for a few days with a moderator). Google paid focus groups. Some of the sites I’m signed up with are Realtime Research, Farron, Stable, Purple Corporation, KB Research and Q and A Market Research

I love everyday rewards!!! Last year I saved $260 off my xmas shop and so far this yr I have saved about $60. The bonus points offers help heaps

    • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

I always activate my bonus offers even if its for things I dont think I would buy. Sometimes Ive been in the checkout line and the person before or after me will ask if I would like to scan my card for their groceries which is awesome.

That happened to me last week. It helped that I`m distantly related to the person on checkout.

Oh good on you Okatko Its really lovely when people are kind enough to do that for you.

      • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

Wow that is great! Never happened to me before haha

I always make sure I have my card out ready now. I figure that when the checkout person asks “”Do you have a flybuys card?”” perhaps the person being served might see my card and ask if I want to scan it.

I belong to flybuys and Everyday rewards. I save my flybuys points to use when I travel which thanks to covid has come to a halt. I used to use them to pay for accommodation in the US everytime I travelled there. I used some of my points a few weeks ago to book a night in a hotel in brisbane because my daughter had to be at the airport at 5am and if we had left from here ther would have been no point going to bed the night before. I also use the airline points with velocity and Qantas.

I belong to several survey sites and usually use the points to get flight center gift cards or priceline gift cards.
I do home scanning for nielsen and was saving my points to use for an airfare to the US. I have enough but again thanks to covid my points just sit there.

Grocery shopping…. always check the markdown shelf and if you have the time then the best time to visit the supermarket is about 30mins before closing on the last day before a public holiday. Great mark downs in the fruit and veg, meat, fish, dairy and bakery sections. Invest in a freezer.

Flybuys & Everyday rewards are great! I`ve saved a lot of money from both of them. I usually redeem them at Christmastime.

      • 2 yrs, 10 mths ago

I have so many points sitting there because I havent been able to travel and use them as I normally would.

We have flybuys in our household. On average we get $10 off every 2 weeks. We spend around $100 at coles each week. Sometimes we get promotions like “”spend $100 for 4 consecutive weeks and receive $50″”. We rarely miss these promotions. We would stock up on things that don`t expire like toilet rolls and tissues.

I think Everyday Rewards is also getting better. We didn`t use to buy anything at Woolies because the rewards program was not as good. But I`d still say the fly buy has better promotions and deals.

We also realised that if we have a particularly low spending in one of the supermarkets for a couple of weeks it will more likely to give you a personalised offer, like “”spend $50 for 4 consecutive weeks and receive $50 (or equivalent reward points””.

skincare junkie I also find that from time to time with flybuys they send me an offer of free products. Ive had various food items and cat biscuits for my two kitties which has been very handy.

Nicola, I’m a member Pureprofile surveys and it is trustworthy so a bit of pocket money on the side and get regular surveys based on your profile.. . Also supermarkets now have a lot of groceries now in generic brands even with health foods so buy and try .

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

I used to do surveys with Pureprofile a lot, but I don`t have the time anymore. Whenever my rewards hit $25, I`d cash out. I can`t remember how many times I cashed out, but I received over $100, possibly $200.

      • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

I have recently started pureprofile. Made a bit of spare pocket money which is nice. I wish they would let you cash out more than $70 in 60 days

I’m with RAC (insurance company in Western Australia) and they offer a 3 – 5% discount on gift cards at Woolworths etc. Each fortnight I buy an electronic voucher saving around $20 per fortnight, saving around $500 a year. Each time i save the $20 i transfer into an online bank account that i use around Christmas time.

I have Cashrewards and Shopback Chrome extensions installed. Shopback nearly always has better rates.

I also have Honey chrome extension installed.

Another thing is sometimes when you put stuff in your cart, give it a few hours or a day, and some brands send you an email with a coupon code for e.g. 15% off to entice you to process your cart. I RARELY pay full price. 🙂

I shop ALL the time. Usually, apportion a significant threshold of my fortnightly salary into my mortgage though. I could definitely be more money savvy though.

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

I`ve found Adore Beauty do that, leave an item in their cart and you`ll get an email with a discount code. Definately better than paying full price. The review option on their website is great too, $1 per review which can go towards future purchases.

    • 2 yrs, 11 mths ago

Thanks for your tips! I usually try and wait some time before I buy things to see if I really want them, I will have to put them in the cart during this time to see if a discount comes through. 🙂
