Laptops???

Hi BHrs,
I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on what some good (or bad) brands/models of laptops are out there. I am looking for one to take to uni next year and am hoping to have some type of webcam so that I can stay in touch with my little sis 🙂 Any help is much appreciated as I’m sure many own laptops and the toshiba laptop which is at home at the moment dies after 45mins and is hopeless. It needs to be fast and efficent.
Thanks girls

If you’re doing a lot of web browsing, email, word processing, etc that doesn’t really need microsoft windows, get one of the cheaper linux notebooks. For exactly the same hardware, they’re cheaper because you’re not paying extra for the operating system. There is a program called wine that allows you to run windows programs on linux but most linux computers come with firefox, several email programs to chose from, open office (equivalent to microsoft office), and all of that software is completely free and you can download lots more free software.

If you go on http://www.choice.com.au you can see the tried and tests they have done, some are free and some are not.

I’m looking for a good laptop as well, but I’ll get one end of this year or early next year.
As my personal perference, I like acer and hp and dell is okay.

Some things you should look out for are:
    – A high power (CPU): we all want a laptop that would last for long hrs and not die out when you go to lectures!
    – High clock speed such as 2.0GHz: it will send info back and forth quicker
    – High RAM and Hard Drive are pretty important- upload and download files efficiently and and fast as well as backing up files

I apologise since I didn’t give you a certain type of laptop/s. Everyone has a preference and for me I’m quite picky when it comes to getting a good one lol, your better off browsing and do shopping comparision
So keep looking and I’m sure you will find a right one! Goodluck with Uni!

    Hi,

I have a toshiba, it is fabulous, mine is only 5 months old, has a built in web cam and microphone, reasonable speed and i love it. have a look around for something with a good warranty, and talk to a lot of stores about what you need/want.

    hope that helps!

I hate vista sooooooooooooooo much… Understand your pain completely bb…
Since I have had vista on my new laptop it has shat itself three times and ive had to uninstall and install it again.. not impressed.. lucky i backup all my files…

I havent had a dell, but have heard they are quite good for the price.

Personally I have used acer and hps. At the moment I am using a hp, it is a bit more expensive but it is brilliant.. .great quality and all that computer laguage zzzz.. and it was 1700. It works so well, has great picture quality and a brilliant screen size…plus i can watch my dvds on it.

During uni, I used an acer and that was ok for what it was. It was good for uni and assignments but pretty basic.

Why dont you go into havey norman or something and have a look around-they always have such a great range..good luck and let us know what you get..
    Good luck at uni

    Hi Jennrach,

Good to see you back on BH. I have a Dell. My dad has had three Dell laptops and my brother in law has had two and we haven’t had any issues at all. I like the way the webcam is built in. The only issue I have had is VISTA ………….. bloody VISTA. I am seriously thinking about upgrading to Windows 7. Off course that has nothing to do with Dell.

I did have a friend who had an issue with her screen a couple of months after getting it and they sent a tech to replace it. Free of charge. Apparently they were very good. The other thing is you can tailor them to suit your requirements. I had Office preloaded. Just before Christmas I had an isse with VISTA and I reloaded it. Dell made it easy because I backed up my files and I could reload it back to how it was when it was delivered to me. While it was a pain it wasn’t hard just a little time consuming (a couple of hours).

    Cheers
    BB
