Kittens!

Didnt know where else to discuss this now home heaven is gone.

I became a new mummy to some kittens a few weeks ago (selkirk rex). Just wanted to know what food people feed their fur babies.

Supermarket food eg. Whiskas or Vet/pet shop food?

Any other advice for a new kitten mummy?

When my cats were very young kittens, I used to feed them milk from a syringe (without the needle) just like I would feed a baby with a bottle. Then when they grew up, I fed them a mixture of Whiskas and real food. Milk is still a part of their diet though.

I have 4 cats and fostered 7 kittens at one point so hopefully I can help.

The kittens we had all hated kitten milk so it’s okay if they don’t like it. I found the fancy vet brands of cat food to be crazy expensive so I fed the kittens (and current cats) Friskies Dry food and Fancy Feast small cans. They are all healthy regardless of the food. Obviously for the kittens just get the ones marked for kittens not adult cats. I always keep the dry food out in a bowl and the wet food mornings & night. One tip though, cats either don’t like change or repetition with the food so if they lose interest try another flavour/brand.

For treats I always get them from pet shops (PetBarn). The VETALOGICA brand is pretty popular in our household.

I have one cat who has always been on the skinny side so she gets a little bit of chicken or fish every now and then to fatten her up. She’s 5 years old and half the size of her siblings, perfectly healthy just a small & skinny cat.

Thanks for the tips! I have been giving them a variety of brands, theres not many in the supermarket specifically for kittens though.

Has anyone considered pet insurance for their pets?

Thanks so much for all your tips!
I have given them kitten milk but it upset their tummys. At the moment we’re having whiskas kitten wet and dry food they love it. The vet advised that this is just full of fat andi should probably use the scientifically developed brands as my kittens are a little skinny!

I have been a stressed mum this week, have had one kitten with a cold and now one with conjunctivitis! I just want to stay home all day and cuddle them! But i must work to pay for their medication haha.

Hi Imi11! I used to be a registered breeder of Himalayan Seal Points! I used to have a pamphlet that I gave to my buyers. I would encourage water rather than milk for the kittens but it would be okay for them to have that special Whiskas Kitten Milk (or any brand Kitten Milk) too if they were very young – but still always supply water all the time too.

To keep teeth healthy and clean and kittens entertained, I would encourage raw chicken wings (raw only, never cooked) for them to chew on (but remove the raw wing when the kittens lose interest or they can go ‘off’ pretty quick). They can get tired of chicken wings so sometimes it’s best just to offer it to them every now and again.

Any good quality brand kitten food is suitable – depending on what appeals to you really. It’s so good these days because the cat food companies mostly label their foods as to what age kitten they will suit.

I do know that cats as a species absolutely love variety in their diet so it’s always good to offer different flavours and different brands to change things up a bit. Though some cats definitely might show a preference for say, chicken for example, they still could appreciate say, a chicken & turkey variety too for a change up.

    Happy kitten days! : )

take lots of pics, they grow so fast (and post them)! The vet told me that dry food is fine as wet food is mainly fat and water, though they’ll much prefer wet food. I use whiskas kitten food for mine (10months old), mainly dry but wet if they have been good (fat chance!!!). They will eat anything, especially stuff they’re not allowed to (tastes better apparently) – we daren’t leave a (wrapped) loaf out.

Congrats on your fur-babies! No advice on specific foods per say, but definitely agree with saltine re mixing up dry food and wet. Haven’t had kittens for a long while now, but my two fur babies still love kitten dry food as a treat (it’s milkier!)

    Congrats!

Depending on how young they are, give them milk. There is specific kitten milk sold in supermarkets but my cat’s have always gotten regular cows milk with no problems. My cats also love yoghurt! They will stick their entire head in a 1kg tub and lick it clean. If they don’t have any specific health problems, any type of cat food is fine. Nothing wrong with cheap food. I do recommend you give a mixture of dry food (good for keeping their teeth clean) and moist food. Cats also love raw meat and will hound you when you are preparing dinner.

Always have a bowl of fresh water near their food. Although cats often don’t like drinking from a bowl, you may find them sneaking licks at a dripping tap or the bottom of your shower haha.

Other advice: get them desexed asap, microchipped, vaccinations.

Also, don’t be surprised if you can’t find them in the house. When my cats were little, they often liked to sleep underneath the pillows on the bed. They’re very good at hide and seek.

    Good luck 🙂
