Hospital bag essentials (cesarean)

Hey beauties! I need your advice…

I’ve had a hunch for quite some time now that I’d need a cesarean (placenta previa), but it was still a bit overwhelming to hear the doctor confirm the news yesterday. My only personal experience is with uncomplicated natural births, so I am keen to hear from mothers who have undergone cesarean births what additional items they’d recommend popping into my hospital bag.

My OB’s office gave me a brochure for the SRC recovery shorts, which I am definitely going to purchase as they will be rebated by my private health cover so they’ll cost me nothing and they sound really good, but is there anything else I should be looking at to make my extended stay/recovery more bearable?

Thanks a bunch! xx

Awww she is delicious Lucrecia – like a little doll. Love, love the picture.

My first born was a girl and she was a nightmare and would not sleep much during the day or night, yet she would fall asleep against my chest no problems. It wasn’t till I started putting a warm hot water bottle (just to warm up the sheet a bit) in her bassinet and when I moved her from my chest to her bed, it kept her happy. It kept her asleep for about an hour. I didn’t get back to normal regular sleep till she was 9 months old. Had to push myself to have another baby who was a boy and slept 10 hours a night. some you win, some you lose.

She is the cutest, jatz! I just want to kiss that squishy little face all up.

My second daughter was born in May (just as the weather was beginning to cool down), so we used the hot water bottle trick too. It`s a good one! Funny how your boy was your good sleeper. One way or another it seems like it`s just meant to be challenging. A bit of the luck of the draw!

Thanks for the photo, Lucrecia, she is absolutely beautiful. I can sympathise about the not thinking night sleeping is necessary!! My first born was 5 months old before I had a decent sleep and all these years later I can still remember thinking I’d never not be tired! I ended up sleeping when he did but that’s not an option for you with the rest of the family!!!!

Thrilled that you’re feeling so positive and happy, it’s brilliant and wonderful being able to share with you.

Trish, why does it not surprise me that your son kept you up for 5 months?! My girls were great sleepers, sleeping through the night from 4 weeks and 6 weeks. And my boys… My first son was almost 2 before he slept through the night and my almost 3 year old has slept all night maybe once? We did everything with the boys that we did with the girls, but they were just different. Fingers crossed Chanel will be like her sisters. She`s feeding really well and seems quite content generally, so looking good so far!

I am so glad to be out of the hospital! It has greatly improved my mood. I was getting really cranky having to put up with some of the midwives. Some were fantastic, but others were like a disapproving mother who treats you like you can never do anything right. You`d think after 5 children they`d give you some credit for knowing what you`re doing, but no. It`s good to be home!

…and already she is sick of all the photos. I can’t blame her though. It has been a big week!

She`s something else, IndieAna! 4-6 months is usually my favourite time, but knowing she`s the last, I`m making more of an effort to enjoy these early days as much as I can!

Oh she is beautiful! That hair! Josh had that much when he was born, and the heartburn I had while pregnant was horrible so I imagine it was for you too.

Hopefully you get some sleep soon. If you haven`t already discovered them, have a look at Love to Dream swaddles they are what got me back into bed instead of on the rocker.

Anne, the heartburn I had with EVERY one of my pregnancies was absolutely horrible! And my kids have all had a ton of hair. We spent a few days wondering whether she`s blonde or brunette as the ends of her hair looks like they`ve actually been frosted. My last baby was the same and we called him Rod Stewart for the longest time due to his bright blonde hair with frosty tips. Chanel is definitely a brunette, but she has some pretty fancy highlighting work going on! As you do when you`re a baby with a fancy nickname. 😉

Btw, I love the name Josh! If it wasn`t my brother`s name, I definitely would have picked it for one of my boys.

I`ll check out those swaddles. I`ve been through a few different ones already and they`re okay during the day, but they just seem to hold no magic whatsoever for her once the sun goes down. But sometimes it`s a matter of finding THE one, so thanks for the tip!

The way she is laying in the picture is how the LTD work so fingers crossed they work for you…

Isn`t it weird how hair can cause so much heartburn?!

I wonder why that is? Seems I read a study years ago, but I forget what the reasoning was.

Thank you so much everyone for the congrats and well wishes. It’s been a huge week, but I’m feeling well and truly in the little happy bubble.

As you might expect from a baby whose nickname is Chanel, she’s just a little high maintenance. She’s happy to sleep wherever, whenever we put her down during the day. But at night, she refuses to sleep at all unless she’s cuddled up on my chest. I’m thinking I may never get to sleep in a bed again. I was holding off on making any big purchases until after we move, but I think I might need to go ahead and buy that chaise I’ve been looking at since I’ll be sleeping upright for the foreseeable future (so says Chanel!).
